Underestimating Robert Cray is a real danger. He's so good at what he does – singing, writing and especially playing – that his albums have an effortless feel, as if it's easy to turn out soul-baring performances year after year. But his catalog packs a mighty punch, growing richer in time. On his new album, I Was Warned, Cray's out there telling the truth again, as strong as ever. Working mainly in a Stax/Volt groove, with the Memphis Horns aboard once more, Cray examines broken relationships and seeks definition as a man. He may mourn that he's "Just a Loser," as on the opening track, but that's an atypical observation. Cray is given to taking hard looks at himself with confessional bluntness. But as he chronicles his faults and the endless quest to do the right thing, he comes to understand his strengths as well. In "The Price I Pay," for example, he sounds weary of bearing the burden of unreciprocated love, but the song's lilting arrangement and Cray's own singsong guitar solo hint at something positive coming out of this trial. That life goes on is an overriding theme of I Was Warned, and nowhere is it better explored than on three consecutive songs near the end of the disc: "A Whole Lotta Pride," "A Picture of a Broken Heart" and the devastating "He Don't Live Here Anymore." Cray's soloing is superb throughout, from the popping, angular lines enlivening "I'm a Good Man" to the complex, multitextured workout on the title track; it's most revealing of the inner man, however, on "He Don't Live Here Anymore." This one's for the ages, an auspicious moment on an album rife with commanding performances. DAVID MCGEE

James Morrison (born 13 August 1984) is a BRIT Award-winning English singer-songwriter and guitarist from Rugby, Warwickshire in the UK. Songs for You, Truths for Me is the second album by English singer, songwriter and guitarist James Morrison, released on 29 September 2008. The album was a commercial success in the UK where it entered the album charts at number three and in Ireland where it topped the charts. Jennifer Hudson is the self-titled debut album by the American singer and actress of the same name. First released by Arista Records on September 27, 2008 in Australia, Hudson worked with a range of different producers and songwriters on the album, including Missy Elliott, Brian Kennedy, Ne-Yo, T-Pain, Tank, Robin Thicke, Timbaland, and The Underdogs, among others.

Divine Brown, previously known as Divine Earth Essence, is a Canadian rhythm and blues and soul singer and theatre performer.

She is currently known for her 2005 Canadian radio hit "Old Skool Love." Even without an album prior to 2005, she was invited to perform at various musical festivals around the world. Her debut album Divine Brown was a underground hit and was fairly successful in the mainstream market. She has a five-octave vocal range. Her new album, The Love Chronicles, was released on August 19, 2008. To date, three singles have been released from the album: "Lay It On the Line", "Meet Me At the Roxy", and "Sunglasses". Brown grew up in Toronto, Ontario. She toured with the Backstreet Boys for their Unbreakable Tour in North America in 2008.

The Love Chronicles is her second album.

What's Going On is not only Marvin Gaye's masterpiece, it's the most important and passionate record to come out of soul music, delivered by one of its finest voices, a man finally free to speak his mind and so move from R&B sex symbol to true recording artist. With What's Going On, Gaye meditated on what had happened to the American dream of the past -- as it related to urban decay, environmental woes, military turbulence, police brutality, unemployment, and poverty. These feelings had been bubbling up between 1967 and 1970, during which he felt increasingly caged by Motown's behind-the-times hit machine and restrained from expressing himself seriously through his music. Finally, late in 1970, Gaye decided to record a song that the Four Tops' Obie Benson had brought him, "What's Going On." When Berry Gordy decided not to issue the single, deeming it uncommercial, Gaye refused to record any more material until he relented. Confirmed by its tremendous commercial success in January 1971, he recorded the rest of the album over ten days in March, and Motown released it in late May. Besides cementing Marvin Gaye as one of the most important artists in pop music, What's Going On was far and away the best full-length to issue from the singles-dominated Motown factory, and arguably the best soul album of all time. Conceived as a statement from the viewpoint of a Vietnam veteran (Gaye's brother Frankie had returned from a three-year hitch in 1967), What's Going On isn't just the question of a baffled soldier returning home to a strange place, but a promise that listeners would be informed by what they heard (that missing question mark in the title certainly wasn't a typo). Instead of releasing listeners from their troubles, as so many of his singles had in the past, Gaye used the album to reflect on the climate of the early '70s, rife with civil unrest, drug abuse, abandoned children, and the spectre of riots in the near past. Alternately depressed and hopeful, angry and jubilant, Gaye saved the most sublime, deeply inspired performances of his career for "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)," "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)," and "Save the Children." The songs and performances, however, furnished only half of a revolution; little could've been accomplished with the Motown sound of previous Marvin Gaye hits like "Stubborn Kind of Fellow" and "Hitch Hike" or even "I Heard It Through the Grapevine." What's Going On, as he conceived and produced it, was like no other record heard before it: languid, dark, and jazzy, a series of relaxed grooves with a heavy bottom, filled by thick basslines along with bongos, conga, and other percussion. Fortunately, this aesthetic fit in perfectly with the style of longtime Motown session men like bassist James Jamerson and guitarist Joe Messina. When the Funk Brothers were, for once, allowed the opportunity to work in relaxed, open proceedings, they produced the best work of their careers (and indeed, they recognized its importance before any of the Motown executives). Jamerson's playing on "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)" functions as the low-end foundation but also its melodic hook, while an improvisatory jam by Eli Fountain on alto sax furnished the album's opening flourish. (Much credit goes to Gaye himself for seizing on these often tossed-off lines as precious; indeed, he spent more time down in the Snakepit than he did in the control room.) As with all Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab releases, meticulous attention to detail is paid during the transfer process. Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On was a landmark recording and is considered one of the greatest albums ever made. When the Love Generation (which, truthfully, did no better with that emotion than any other generation) got its first real glimpse of soul giant Otis Redding at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 backed by Booker T. & the MG's, a powerhouse band if there ever were one, they saw love with a capital L, because Redding sang love songs like the world was about to end, wringing the emotion out of them like a soulful, urgent hurricane. He was, simply put, an unstoppable force on-stage, taking all the energy of gospel and upping the ante until it seemed like the very sky itself was about to fly off into space from the very power of it. Redding was soul, and soul in every fiber of his being. The two sets included here, which predate the Monterey performance by a couple of months, were recorded in London (March 17) and Paris (March 21) on the Stax/Volt package tour of Europe in 1967, and they just might be even more astounding (particularly the Paris night) than the Monterey set. Working again with the MG's, with the horns of the Mar-Keys along for extra kick, Redding burns the house down in both of these sets, wringing every last bit of energy out of Sam Cooke's "Shake" until it seems the universe is about to come off its hinges, turning "Try a Little Tenderness" into a silken caress, making "I've Been Loving You Too Long" into an anthem for the hopeless arc of love, and taking "Day Tripper" to places the Beatles could only dream about, all with the MG's and the Mar-Keys churning behind him like a huge, funky turbine. This was Stax soul in all its ragged, vital glory. The original tapes of these sets (Atlantic issued an LP of the London show in 1967) have been reassembled and restored for this release, and the end result is a stunning reminder of what a giant Redding was. Adequately covering the rich legacy of Atlantic Records' first 50 years over only two CDs is an impossible task, even concentrating only on rock and R&B, so it would be difficult to expect Atlantic Records 50 Years: Gold Anniversary to offer anything more than a cursory overview. The compilation does illustrate the incredible depth and diversity of talent that the label has maintained over the years, even if it doesn't come anywhere near a coherent presentation of that talent. Instead, 50 Years skims a sampling of some of the best and best-known songs from throughout the company's history. The first disc concentrates primarily on Atlantic's rich catalog of R&B and soul music from the '50s and '60s (a greater portion of which easily filled a hugely entertaining nine-CD box set) and moves into seminal rock legends like Cream, CSNY, Led Zeppelin, and the Rolling Stones -- all represented by only one song apiece. The second disc is wildly varied, featuring prog-rock from Yes, a couple of disco hits, and mainstream pop/rock from the '80s, as well as a few selections from Atlantic's most popular '90s artists (Tori Amos, Hootie and the Blowfish, Brandy, Jewel). So the problem certainly isn't with the quality of the music; it's just that there are so many different musical styles represented here that the set can't present them in any sort of context. Nearly all of these artists have a great deal more quality material out there, certainly enough that having one cut from each is hardly a satisfying proposition; moreover, there are various-artists compilations covering most of these styles in more coherent fashion. However, even if it isn't at all unified, Atlantic Records 50 Years undeniably possesses a wealth of great music.
