Rolling Stones - MFSL Collection (1964-78){Millennium Remasters}

Rolling Stones - MFSL Collection (1964-78)
FLAC | No Cue No Log | 2.31 GB | Covers
{Millennium Remasters}

The Rolling Stones set includes the albums from the MFSL BOX SET: THE ROLLING STONES (UK version), 12 X 5, OUT OF OUR HEADS (US version), AFTERMATH (UK version), BETWEEN THE BUTTONS (UK version), THEIR SATANIC MAJESTIES REQUEST, BEGGAR'S BANQUET, LET IT BLEED, GET YOUR YA-YA'S OUT!, and HOT ROCKS. To complete the set, MFSL's other titles STICKY FINGERS and SOME GIRLS are also included.
The Rolling Stones set has been in the works for quite awhile and just about never saw the light of day because of the SACD releases. The new SACDs are great sounding and are a lot of fun to listen to. Much of the Stones' material wasn't recorded under the best of conditions. The SACDs often smooth out the characteristic hard-edged sound and bring out some detail lost in the red line.
Nevertheless, the MFSL LPs have a clean, precise sound stage that is somewhat lacking on the SACDs.
They have a less compressed sound and really stand up on their own. In other words, they wouldn't be offered if not felt to be a worthwhile listening experience.

Review by Barry Weber

The Scorpions' third release, In Trance, continues to display their high-energy music, which is impossible to ignore. With the eyebrow-lifting "Dark Lady" as the opening track, the album immediately captures the listener's attention and keeps it all the way until the end. The interesting title track is clearly the best song of the album, but singles such as the fast-paced "Robot Man" and the hard-rocking "Top of the Bill" also stand out as highlights. Excellent singing and powerful music make this the best Scorpions recording working with Uli Jon Roth.

In Trance is the 3rd studio album by the German heavy metal band Scorpions released in 1975.

The original version of the album cover clearly showed the cover model's bare breast hanging down towards the guitar. Later releases have the breast blacked out so that it is not visible. This is the first of many Scorpions album covers that have been censored.

Originally Released In 1970, SHM-CD Release - 2009

With their second album Rides Again, the James Gang came into their own. Under the direction of guitarist Joe Walsh, the group - now featuring bassist Dale Peters - began incorporating keyboards into their hard rock, which helped open up their musical horizons. For much of the first side of Rides Again, the group tear through a bunch of boogie numbers, most notably the heavy groove of "Funk #49." On the second side, the James Gang departs from their trademark sound, adding keyboard flourishes and elements of country-rock to their hard rock. Walsh's songwriting had improved, giving the band solid support for their stylistic experiments. What ties the two sides of the record together is the strength of the band's musicianship, which burns brightly and powerfully on the hardest rockers, as well as on the sensitive ballads. -allmusic

Joe Walsh is one of the most underappreciated musicians in rock music. Whether it be his work with The James Gang, The Eagles or solo work, he consistently makes quality and inspiring rock music. He may have been at his best with this Ohio-based band and Rides On is their finest effort. The album kicks off with a rock classic, the manic "Funk #49" which has a great riff. "The Bomber" shows off Mr. Walsh's guitar prowess with some wicked slide work. The first five tracks are classic arena rock, but the band shows there diversity with the second five tracks that form a song suite of sorts. They are more in the country-rock vein and show a softer side as opposed to the heaviness of the first five tracks. The James Gang never achieved the commercial success they deserved, but Rides Again is a great place to start to get an idea of the quality of this group.

"Destroyed" is possibly THE greatest pop punk record of all times! With infectiously catchy Ramones-style songs and lyrics about porn, beer and junk food, this album is a true CLASSIC. [Toxxy]

Destroyed is the second studio album by punk band Sloppy Seconds. It was released in 1989 on Musical Tragedies/Toxic Shock. The album cover is a parody of the Kiss album Destroyer from 1976.

Toxxy sez: There's so many TOTALLY, GREAT songs on this album - the first 12 tracks are simply all killers! - with lyrics there are so goddamn f*ckin' cool and I cannot choose one, two, three etc. favorites, but... "Blackmail" could be my No.1 junk-rock song on "Destroyed". The guitar and bass simply click in absolute "awesomeness", Steve's druming is so infectious that I can't help but "air-drum" along!, and B.A.'s yells is just so...in place, in there, up there, f*ckin' everywhere! And the lyrics...a masterful brain brought us these legendary lines...:

"Sloppy Seconds - Blackmail"

Well, your father's in Bermuda
And the milkman's overjoyed
Your maid is into bondage
And I've got Polaroids

And I was on the corner
When you wrecked your mother's Porsche
But why should I inform her
About your poor misfortune?

'Cause everyone has secrets
But sometimes you get caught
So if it's just between us
My silence can be bought
Blackmail... blackmail

I was looking through your closet
When I found your water bong
Your stash of Turkish hash
And a twelve-inch rubber dong

And I won't tell your family
About your last abortion
So you can call it "bribery"
But I prefer "extortion"

Well, my counselor is a dealer
And the football coach is queer
The school nurse and the dean of boys
Are having an affair

And someone shot the rent-a-cop
And I'm the only witness
But I won't tell you who it was
'Cause it's none of your business

SLOPPY SECONDS and JUNK-ROCK RULES!

Band line-up:

B.A. - vocals, voices, yells, producer
Steve Sloppy - drums, producer
Bo'Ba Jam - bass, producer
Dr. Roadkill - guitar, producer

Additional musicians:

Rob Perkins - background vocals, photography, road crew
Paul Bohall - background vocals, road crew
Craig "R.V." Croomes - background vocals

...and a few others.

Calling this a Masterpiece is an understatement!

This is possibly the greatest pop punk record of all times, “Destroyed”. The album was originally released in ’89 by legendary punk label Toxic Shock. No collection is complete without this record!

This band’s producing demented, adolescent humor and actually less-than-stupid idiot rock. More often than not, these junk-culture-worshipping couch potatoes come up with hearty guffaw-inducing songs like I don’t wanna be a homosexual, Janie is a nazy and I want ‘em dead. For diehard Ramones fans: Sloppy Seconds write songs that are actually a bit more lyrically complicated than the Ramones, but are from the same loser, pseudo-half-wit perspective. The song Serious, co-written by Lukather, is also on the Alice Cooper album From the inside.

Their first full-length release, and perhaps their all-time classic album, with such memorable Sloppy hits as “I Don’t Wanna Be A Homosexual”, “Come Back Traci”, “Germany” and their incredible version of John Denver’s “Leaving On A Jet Plane”. This was the first co-release between MT and Toxic Shock. A vinyl version of the LP was also available on Toxic Shock only. The cover is a great parody of the famous Kiss “Destroyer” album cover. Also, on the inside of the CD is a picture of two of the Sloppy guys with Ace Frehley of Kiss, who is holding the Sloppy Seconds album cover! Cool! [unknown reviewer]

Track List:

1. I Don't Want To Be A Homosexual (5:05)
2. Come Back Traci (2:04)
3. Take You Home (1:24)
4. Black Roses (2:22)
5. Runnin' From The CIA (2:01)
6. The Horror Of Party Beach (2:09)
7. Blackmail (2:49)
8. So Fucked Up (2:34)
9. Germany (2:19)
10. Janie Is A Nazi (2:37)
11. I Want 'em Dead (3:33)
12. If I Had A Woman (2:53)
13. Veronica (2:42)
14. The Candy Man (1:34)
15. Steal Your Beer (1:40)
16. Time Bomb (1:42)
17. Serious [bonus track] (2:15)

For me, music can be a seasonal thing. Sometimes the bands are seasonal for a reason. For example, I rarely listen to heavy doses of AFI or the Misfits outside of the fall times (though select cuts like “Bullet” can put a smile on my face at any point during the year). Conversely, during summer time I play way more of your pop-punk standards like Snuff (I got their album Demmamussabebonk the first time I went to Hawaii and it will always remind me of that trip), the Queers, Screeching Weasel, and the Lillingtons. Many of these bands are getting back together and releasing records again and touring, so I figured that I’d share an under appreciated pop-punk band who fits in nicely with any of these pop-punk summer bands: Sloppy Seconds.

I first became aware of Sloppy Seconds long ago when I purchased the Nitro Records comp, Deep Thoughts. I really liked the two Sloppy Seconds songs on the album, but always forgot to buy their CDs. About a month ago a friend of mine burned me a copy of their first album Destroyed (calm down, I bought a copy online soon thereafter). Since then I have been tapping my feet and singing along to a pop-punk classic.

Like the aforementioned Queers and Screeching Weasel, Sloppy Seconds play Ramones-influenced punk rock. Where they stand out from their peers is in the unique vocal styling of frontman B.A (I shall attempt to describe his voice as Johnny Rotten mixed with John Fogerty) and their tongue-in-cheek lyrics. Hell, the whole album is tongue-in-cheek as the cover art is a spoof of the KISS album, Destroyer. For an example of their band‘s sense of humor, the first track is entitled “I Don’t Wanna Be a Homosexual,” yet starts off with a sampling of a John Waters film and then goes straight into a nice pro-gay song.

Just as the Clash wrote about what they saw going on around them, Sloppy Seconds deal with their immediate world as well, which consists of porn (there is a touching tribute to `80s porn queen Traci Lords in “Come Back Traci“), strippers, B-rated horror movies, girls, comic books, and partying. Some of my favorite tracks include “I Want ‘Em Dead,“ “I’m Tired of Running from the CIA” which features the classic hook line, “Mars needs women but Mars can wait, cuz I ain’t goin’ to masturbate!” and the song “Blackmail.” The track “So Fucked Up” sounds like it could have influenced the illustrious Andrew W.K. as it is a song about partying hard and the chorus consists of gang vocals shouting “so fucked up!” Also, since the band claims to have derived their name from playing covers, the album features a sweet cover of “Leavin’ on a Jet Plane” that puts Me First and Gimme Gimmes' rendition to shame. However, their cover of the song “The Candy Man,” while amusing on the first listen, quickly becomes a throwaway track. As with any band of this genre, the album has over 21 songs which gets to be a bit too much. Yet, since the songs are so damn fun it doesn’t really matter.

Now that the sun is out here in northern California and Spring has officially hit, it is time to dust off those fun summer records. Destroyed by Sloppy Seconds is a great album and a much overlooked piece of pop-punk music that any fan of the genre will love, and will definitely come to be part of my seasonal summer rotation. Whitesnake - Whitesnake (SHM-CD)

When Whitesnake broke into the spotlight with Slide It In (1984), a battalion of cynical critics predicted the band's success couldn't last, but Coverdale and company silenced all the naysayers with 1987's self-titled album, which rocketed to No. 2 on the Billboard album chart. The record was driven by the pumping rocker "Here I Go Again" and the tender power ballad "Is This Love," but the band's mainstream appeal might have had as much to do with their unabashedly sexual videos as with their bubblegum metal. The clips, which seemed to splash across MTV every 20 minutes, starred Coverdale's girlfriend and B-movie actress Tawny Kitaen, and highlighted her busty, scantily clad body in various provocative poses. Volume and T&A--a metalhead's wet dream.

Style: Prog Rock, Classic Rock
Notes: This is the 2005 japanese digital remaster, which was a limited run and is now out of print. The release is part of the "mini LP" series, where everything has been faithfully reproduced to mimic the original LP release, but in a CD format. For 'The Division Bell', this includes: the gatefold cover with an exact reproduction of the LP's inner sleeve and side a and b record centers. There is also a paper insert in both English and Japanese. The whole package comes in a resealable plastic sleeve with a paper OBI inside as well as an additional OBI sticker on the plastic cover. In the case of this particular release, the reproduction quality and mastering is outstanding and matches beautifully with the other Sony Direct Pink Floyd mini LP releases.

Band Info:

Pink Floyd are an English rock band who initially earned recognition for their psychedelic and space rock music, and later, as they evolved, for their progressive rock music. Pink Floyd are known for philosophical lyrics, sonic experimentation, innovative album cover art, and elaborate live shows. One of rock music's most successful acts, the group have sold over 210 million albums worldwide[1][2][3] including 74.5 million albums in the United States.[4] Pink Floyd influenced progressive rock artists of the 1970s such as Genesis and Yes,[5] as well as contemporary artists such as Nine Inch Nails,[6]Dream Theater,[7] and Porcupine Tree.

Pink Floyd were formed in London in 1965 when Syd Barrett moved down from Cambridge and joined The Tea Set, a group consisting of Regent Street Polytechnic architecture students Nick Mason, Roger Waters, Richard Wright and Bob Klose.[8] The group had moderate mainstream success and were one of the most popular bands in the London underground music scene in the late 1960s as a psychedelic band led by Syd Barrett. However, Barrett's erratic behaviour eventually led his colleagues to replace him with guitarist and singer David Gilmour. After Barrett's departure, singer and bass player Roger Waters became a dominant force in the group, a situation which developed through the late 1970s, and lasted until his departure from the group in 1985. The band had always been popular in England, though they did not achieve worldwide critical and commercial success until the concept albums The Dark Side of the Moon (1973), Wish You Were Here (1975), and Animals (1977), and the rock opera The Wall (1979).

In 1985, Waters declared Pink Floyd "a spent force", but the remaining members, led by Gilmour, continued recording and touring under the name Pink Floyd. Waters sued them for the name and eventually they reached a settlement out of court, under which Gilmour, Mason and Wright would continue as Pink Floyd. They again enjoyed worldwide success with A Momentary Lapse of Reason (1987) and The Division Bell (1994). Waters performed with the band for the first time in 24 years on 2 July 2005 at the London Live 8 concert. wikipedia

It included material from both her Capitol Records and Asylum Records output, and went back to 1967 for The Stone Poneys' hit "Different Drum". It remains the biggest-selling album of Linda's entire career, being certified 7 times Platinum (over 7 million US copies sold) by the RIAA, in the US alone. It peaked at #6 on the main Billboard album chart and reached #2 on Billboard's Country albums chart, where it remained for three years. It has sold approximately 20 million copies worldwide.

Amazon.com essential recording
Linda Ronstadt's appeal crossed so many genre lines it's impossible to categorize her as anything other than a gifted vocalist. She enjoyed success on country and rock charts alike with a voice that capably handled the requirements of both styles. There was a commanding roughness to her you-did-me-wrong classic, "You're No Good," that mixed both soul and R&B stylings into her vocals. In a similar vein, she handled the Motown standard, "Heat Wave," like a pro, this time giving it the slightest hint of a country twang. She even rose to the occasion of covering Buddy Holly's "That'll Be the Day." Rondstadt had some of her best moments with material that had a more emotional element, regardless of genre. "Love Is a Rose" and "Tracks of My Tears" are good examples of the disparate styles she could navigate with equal aplomb. Greatest Hits doesn't chronicle Rondstadt's hits past the mid-1970s, but is still worth owning, not only for the songs themselves, but as a point of reference in her career. --Steve Gdula

Review By G. Sawaged
After his stint as leader of The Raspberries, Eric Carmen had a succesful solo career. "All by myself" is from Carmen's solo debut album from 1975. One of his most successful songs, it has since been covered by numerous artists. All of the songs on this album were written by Carmen except "Hungry Eyes" from the movie 'Dirty Dancing'. Eric Carmen has an unerring sense of melody and songcraft that has resulted in some of the best pop rock ever. Just try not to dance to "That's Rock 'n Roll"...impossible. "She Did It" is the greatest Beach Boy song that Brian Wilson never wrote, and "It hurts Too Much" has a Phil Spector-like power to it. This album is a must for music lovers. If you're a fan of Billy Joel and/or Barry Manilow, you will love this album.

Review By J. Carroll Jack
Ex-Raspberries singer Carmen's out put is pretty well-represented on this greatest hits package. Breaking out his falsetto on a number of occasions, Carmen does a decent job of creating the aura of sadness needed to pull off songs like "change of heart," "Never Gonna Fall in Love Again," and the all time leader in depressive pop hits, "All by Myself." (Never to be listened to while in the wallows of self-pity; trust me.)After a while the sameness of these tunes starts to wear; always a danger on a greatest hits package, but there are many moments where Carmen's pure talent overwhelms the occasionally trite material, and he reaches new heights on the excellent "Boats Against the Current." Not a bad set for the casual fan, this collection covers the singles between 1975-1988. I'm sure there are more current collections, but this works fine for me.

Biography by Greg Prato:
Eric Carmen has amassed an impressive amount of hit singles over his long career, whether it be as a member of the influential power pop outfit the Raspberries, as a solo artist, or as a songwriter for others. Born on August 11, 1949, in Cleveland, OH, Carmen began his musical training at an early age -- by the age of six, he was taking violin lessons, and by 11, he was playing piano and penning his own original compositions. With his discovery of the Beatles during the early '60s, Carmen's attention shifted toward rock & roll, as he began playing piano and singing with high school bands. It was while Carmen was a student at John Carroll University that he joined a local group called Cyrus Erie, who, apart from issuing several obscure singles for Epic Records, failed to leave much of an impact outside of the local region. But when another popular local rock outfit, the Choir, split up, Carmen and another Cyrus Erie member, guitarist Wally Bryson, joined forces with former Choir members Dave Smalley (bass) and Jim Bonfanti (drums), which led to the formation of the Raspberries. Mixing rockers (that combined the melody of the Beatles and the guitar riffs of the Who) with lush ballads, the quartet quickly created a buzz, which resulted in a recording contract with Capitol. Right off the bat, the quartet scored a massive hit single with the infectious "Go All the Way" (taken from their self-titled 1972 debut), which peaked at number five on the singles charts. Despite issuing further solid albums (1972's Fresh, 1973's Side Three, and 1974's Starting Over), the group became known first and foremost as a "singles" act, as their albums failed to match the chart success of such further hit singles as "I Wanna Be With You," "Let's Pretend," and "Overnight Sensation (Hit Record)." With Carmen's increasing frustration with the group, the Raspberries split up in 1975 (it wasn't long, however, before other groups began translating the Raspberries' sound/approach into their own hits, especially Cheap Trick and the Knack, among countless others).Immediately thereafter, Carmen inked a solo deal with Arista. Instead of following in the Raspberries' power pop direction, he opted for a more mature, singer/songwriter/ballad style, as evidenced by his self-titled 1975 debut. The shift in musical styles soon reaped rewards for Carmen, as it spawned two big hits -- "All by Myself" and "Never Gonna Fall in Love Again" -- while the album almost cracked the Top 20. Despite a strong start to his solo career, the hits soon dried up, as such subsequent albums as 1977's Boats Against the Current, 1978's Change of Heart, and 1980's Tonight You're Mine each sold less than its predecessor. Carmen sunk from sight for several years, but penned the Top Ten hit power ballad "Almost Paradise" (from the incredibly popular 1984 Footloose [Original Soundtrack]), sung by Heart's Ann Wilson and Loverboy's Mike Reno. With the single proving that a large audience still existed for Carmen-penned ballads, the singer resurfaced a year later with his first solo album in five years -- the second self-titled release of his career. While it did spawn a moderate hit with the single "I Wanna Hear It From Your Lips," the album failed to move up the charts. But it was another movie soundtrack, 1987's Dirty Dancing, that would land Carmen his next big hit, the Top Ten "Hungry Eyes." Carmen scored another hit a year later, "Make Me Lose Control," and also toured as part of the Dirty Dancing concert tour, as well. When the tour wound up, Carmen pulled a disappearing act once more, yet throughout the '90s, a wide variety of renowned artists covered songs of his, including Babes in Toyland, Peter Cetera, Sheryl Crow, Celine Dion, and Diana Ross, among others. 1998 saw Carmen issue his first solo full-length in 13 years, the Japanese release Winter Dreams (released in the U.S. as I Was Born to Love You a year later), while rumors began to swirl regarding an impending Raspberries reunion tour. While it was true that all four original Raspberries members met up in early 1999, and three of them performed a few months later in Cleveland at a party, a reunion ultimately failed to materialize.

Creed - Greatest Hits

Creed - Greatest Hits
Rock | CD, Covers | 165 MB | MP3 Insane, 320 kbps | 5% Recovery | 2004

Creed weren't just one of many two-album wonders of the post-grunge late '90s, they were the biggest of the two-album wonders, selling more records and crashing harder than any other their peers. All the while they produced unflappably earnest heavy rock -- music that sounded like Pearl Jam, only not nearly as much fun. They also traded on Pearl Jam's unfortunate tendency to place sheer emotion and sound over hooks, and since Creed weren't as powerful or interesting musically as the Seattle quartet, that meant that their albums could sound rather samey in the long haul. Nevertheless, their sincerity resonated among mainstream listeners irritated that Pearl Jam went weird after Vs., and with 2000s "With Arms Wide Open," they had a power ballad hit with universal appeal that helped break them through to an even wider audience than they had before. It, naturally, is the literal centerpiece of Creed's 2004 Greatest Hits, arriving in the middle of the 13-song album. Since it remains their biggest and best song, it's only appropriate that it has such a prominent position on this album, because a listen to the entire album reveals that the rest of their material hasn't aged all that well. Still, for those listeners who want to dig back to the halcyon year or two where Creed were one of the biggest bands in the land, Greatest Hits is the way to do it, since it has all of their charting hits, minus the minor radio hit cover of "Riders on the Storm" from the 2000 Doors tribute album Stoned Immaculate. It may not be timeless music, but Greatest Hits does gather all the noteworthy Creed tracks for those who care. [The initial pressings also contained a bonus DVD, containing all of Creed's music videos, along with some live performances. Unfortunately, the menu interface is not well designed -- it is only possible to play the videos individually, there is no "Play All" function.] ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band - Eddie and the Cruisers (1983, 1993) Versions 1 and 2

Not too many people have noticed, but there are actually two versions of this album, with some different tracks, the original being far the superior. The second version contains songs from the movie by the original period artists, such as "Mockingbird" and "Runaway", while leaving out "Tender Years" and "Wild Summer Nights", two of the original's best tracks. For the sake of completeness, I've included both here as separate downloads.

John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band are often dismissed as little more than Springsteen wannabe's, but they are actually much more than that. In fact, if they hadn't gotten involved with EDDIE AND THE CRUISERS, they might have gone farther. Check out the track "Season In Hell: Fire Suite", and see if that sounds like Bruce's music to you. The same goes for the songs on the EDDIE AND THE CRUISERS II album, and later, non-Eddie related albums such as TOUGH ALL OVER and ROADHOUSE.

Now, I have a great fondness for both films. The mixing of the Springsteen story with the Jim Morrison (of the Doors) legend impressed me.

"We ain't great--we're just some guys from Jersey."

Not true.

Carlos Augusto Santana Alves (born July 20, 1947 in Jalisco, Mexico) is a Grammy Award-winning Mexican rock musician and guitarist. He became famous in the late 1960s and early 1970s with his band, Santana, which created a highly successful blend of rock, salsa, and jazz fusion. The band's sound featured his melodic, blues-based guitar lines set against Latin percussion such as timbales and congas. Santana continued to work in these forms over the following decades. He experienced a sudden resurgence of popularity and critical acclaim in the late 1990s. Rolling Stone also named Santana number 15 on their list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time in 2003.
