Eric Carmen - The Best Of Eric Carmen (1988)

Eric Carmen - The Best Of Eric Carmen
Release: 1988 | Label: Arista | Number: 258 999
Genre: Pop/Rock | Mono/Stereo: 2 Channel

Review By G. Sawaged
After his stint as leader of The Raspberries, Eric Carmen had a succesful solo career. "All by myself" is from Carmen's solo debut album from 1975. One of his most successful songs, it has since been covered by numerous artists. All of the songs on this album were written by Carmen except "Hungry Eyes" from the movie 'Dirty Dancing'. Eric Carmen has an unerring sense of melody and songcraft that has resulted in some of the best pop rock ever. Just try not to dance to "That's Rock 'n Roll"...impossible. "She Did It" is the greatest Beach Boy song that Brian Wilson never wrote, and "It hurts Too Much" has a Phil Spector-like power to it. This album is a must for music lovers. If you're a fan of Billy Joel and/or Barry Manilow, you will love this album.

Review By J. Carroll Jack
Ex-Raspberries singer Carmen's out put is pretty well-represented on this greatest hits package. Breaking out his falsetto on a number of occasions, Carmen does a decent job of creating the aura of sadness needed to pull off songs like "change of heart," "Never Gonna Fall in Love Again," and the all time leader in depressive pop hits, "All by Myself." (Never to be listened to while in the wallows of self-pity; trust me.)After a while the sameness of these tunes starts to wear; always a danger on a greatest hits package, but there are many moments where Carmen's pure talent overwhelms the occasionally trite material, and he reaches new heights on the excellent "Boats Against the Current." Not a bad set for the casual fan, this collection covers the singles between 1975-1988. I'm sure there are more current collections, but this works fine for me.

Biography by Greg Prato:
Eric Carmen has amassed an impressive amount of hit singles over his long career, whether it be as a member of the influential power pop outfit the Raspberries, as a solo artist, or as a songwriter for others. Born on August 11, 1949, in Cleveland, OH, Carmen began his musical training at an early age -- by the age of six, he was taking violin lessons, and by 11, he was playing piano and penning his own original compositions. With his discovery of the Beatles during the early '60s, Carmen's attention shifted toward rock & roll, as he began playing piano and singing with high school bands. It was while Carmen was a student at John Carroll University that he joined a local group called Cyrus Erie, who, apart from issuing several obscure singles for Epic Records, failed to leave much of an impact outside of the local region. But when another popular local rock outfit, the Choir, split up, Carmen and another Cyrus Erie member, guitarist Wally Bryson, joined forces with former Choir members Dave Smalley (bass) and Jim Bonfanti (drums), which led to the formation of the Raspberries. Mixing rockers (that combined the melody of the Beatles and the guitar riffs of the Who) with lush ballads, the quartet quickly created a buzz, which resulted in a recording contract with Capitol. Right off the bat, the quartet scored a massive hit single with the infectious "Go All the Way" (taken from their self-titled 1972 debut), which peaked at number five on the singles charts. Despite issuing further solid albums (1972's Fresh, 1973's Side Three, and 1974's Starting Over), the group became known first and foremost as a "singles" act, as their albums failed to match the chart success of such further hit singles as "I Wanna Be With You," "Let's Pretend," and "Overnight Sensation (Hit Record)." With Carmen's increasing frustration with the group, the Raspberries split up in 1975 (it wasn't long, however, before other groups began translating the Raspberries' sound/approach into their own hits, especially Cheap Trick and the Knack, among countless others).Immediately thereafter, Carmen inked a solo deal with Arista. Instead of following in the Raspberries' power pop direction, he opted for a more mature, singer/songwriter/ballad style, as evidenced by his self-titled 1975 debut. The shift in musical styles soon reaped rewards for Carmen, as it spawned two big hits -- "All by Myself" and "Never Gonna Fall in Love Again" -- while the album almost cracked the Top 20. Despite a strong start to his solo career, the hits soon dried up, as such subsequent albums as 1977's Boats Against the Current, 1978's Change of Heart, and 1980's Tonight You're Mine each sold less than its predecessor. Carmen sunk from sight for several years, but penned the Top Ten hit power ballad "Almost Paradise" (from the incredibly popular 1984 Footloose [Original Soundtrack]), sung by Heart's Ann Wilson and Loverboy's Mike Reno. With the single proving that a large audience still existed for Carmen-penned ballads, the singer resurfaced a year later with his first solo album in five years -- the second self-titled release of his career. While it did spawn a moderate hit with the single "I Wanna Hear It From Your Lips," the album failed to move up the charts. But it was another movie soundtrack, 1987's Dirty Dancing, that would land Carmen his next big hit, the Top Ten "Hungry Eyes." Carmen scored another hit a year later, "Make Me Lose Control," and also toured as part of the Dirty Dancing concert tour, as well. When the tour wound up, Carmen pulled a disappearing act once more, yet throughout the '90s, a wide variety of renowned artists covered songs of his, including Babes in Toyland, Peter Cetera, Sheryl Crow, Celine Dion, and Diana Ross, among others. 1998 saw Carmen issue his first solo full-length in 13 years, the Japanese release Winter Dreams (released in the U.S. as I Was Born to Love You a year later), while rumors began to swirl regarding an impending Raspberries reunion tour. While it was true that all four original Raspberries members met up in early 1999, and three of them performed a few months later in Cleveland at a party, a reunion ultimately failed to materialize.

Phil Collins Full Discography

Phil Collins Full Discography

Phil Collins' ascent to the status of one of the most successful pop and adult-contemporary singers of the '80s and beyond was probably as much of a surprise to him as it was to many others. Balding and diminutive, Collins was almost 30 years old when his first solo single, "In the Air Tonight" became a #2 hit in his native U.K. (the song was a Top 20 hit in the U.S.).

AMG review by Steve Huey:
After the Red Hot Chili Peppers left EMI for Warner Bros. and hit the big time with "Under the Bridge," their former label gathered most of the best tracks from the group's first four albums for the compilation What Hits!? Since Blood Sugar Sex Magik, the Peppers' most popular album, was recorded for Warner, none of its songs are present — with the exception of "Under the Bridge," which was somehow licensed for use. What Hits!? does a pretty good job of sifting through the Peppers' uneven discography and picking out the best moments, making it a very useful sampler; it also contains "Show Me Your Soul," the band's contribution to the Pretty Woman soundtrack.

Brandi Carlile - The Story (2007), Live at Easy Street Records (EP) (2007)

Brandi Carlile

Brandi Carlile - The Story (2007), Live at Easy Street Records (EP) (2007)
Pop-rock, folk, singer-songwrites | mp3, VBR V0 & V2 | 53 min & 24 min | 82 & 31 MB

The Story is an excellent album by American singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile produced by T Bone Burnett and released in the spring of 2007 on Columbia. This is the follow-up to 2005's Brandi Carlile, her buzz-making debut (she was tabbed by Rolling Stone as one of "10 Artists to Watch").
This dark, roiling collection fulfills the promise of her remarkable debut, offering resounding confirmation that Carlile is a singular talent. -- S.T. Erlewine, All Music Guide

"It feels genetic to me, a personality trait almost" says Brandi Carlile. "As soon as I was old enough to do anything, talk, walk, throw a ball, whatever it was, I was already singing."

Whether you subscribe to the Nature or Nurture theory of development, Carlile pulls equally from both pools. Following the lineage as far as she can, Carlile explains that her great-grandmother was a country singer who passed it on to her grandfather, who passed it to her mother, who passed the torch to her. Growing up 45 minutes from the nearest freeway, in the woods of Ravensdale outside Seattle, the Carliles were different. While most kids her age were obsessed with Kurt Cobain, Brandi was either at her great-grandparents’ house singing along at "elaborate family jam sessions" or at the Northwest’s version of the Grand Ole Opry where she first took the stage at age eight with her mom, singing Rosanne Cash’s version of "Tennessee Flat Top Box."

In the rural Northwest, Brandi grew up a true country girl making forts, climbing trees and fishing. "I never got in trouble or anything but I was like a really rough and tumble kind of tomboy, always getting my clothes dirty and things like that. I have a brother that's really close in age so we were like twins and my dad always just sort of treated me like my brother so I never got excluded from any of those kinds of activities".

Already obsessed with Elton John and born into Patsy Cline, when Carlile was 15 she discovered the Indigo Girls and picked up a guitar. "I learned guitar sort of on my own when I started going to Lilith Fair and seeing all those girls with the guitars. I thought it was the coolest thing and it was like a sexy instrument. I was playing keyboard at the time. I used to go there and camp and everybody would sit around in a circle and play guitar and I realised that I needed to be able to bring an instrument with me. I couldn't just take a piano everywhere with me so I learned to play guitar".

Soon she was ditching school and busking around Seattle. One of her favorite rock bands in the area was the Fighting Machinists, featuring twin brothers Tim and Phil Hanseroth. When the Machinists broke up, Carlile and the twins plugged in. "I just froze" she says, recalling that first session. "I knew this was going to be our band."

With the tattooed twins (Tim on guitar, Phil on bass) flanking Carlile, the band took off. Instead of using their strongest material for the debut, the band recorded a bunch of B-sides and waited for the right scenario to release the gems.

"When we made our first record we didn't have a record deal, so when Columbia signed us we already had a record that we'd made in my living room, in our practice place and in a couple of small studios around town. We just borrowed money from our grandmas and put this record together and when Columbia signed us they bought that record and put it out. When we made our record we were just basically trying to make something to sell at shows. We needed to make money and so we put all these sort of B sides together and decided to save our really good songs until the right time… So we saved songs like Turpentine, The Story, Wasted, Until I Die for when we got our record deal that we knew we were going to get. We hoped".

Carlile inked the Columbia deal at the end of 2004 and spent the next two years on tour. At last, with Grammy-winning producer T Bone Burnett and world-class session drummer Matt Chamberlain working with the band in a professional studio, the time had come to set that first batch of deeply personal songs free.

Although The Story is technically Brandi Carlile’s sophomore effort, many of the tracks date back as far as 2000. At first the dark images found on the album might be construed as heartache, but as you spend time with the songs they begin to show depth, dealing with more complex issues of innocence lost and a girl turning into a woman. "That’s why the record is called The Story," says Carlile. "That coming-of-age period, from 16 to where I am now at almost 26, was when these songs were conceived. And there’s a lot that happened; detachment from family, moving out, giving up on a lot of things…That’s a really important 10 years."

The linchpin in bringing The Story to life was Burnett, a wily guru, not shy about his opinions. "Sometimes he was a jerk about my guitar playing. Sometimes he was wrong, sometimes he was right. We played the song [The Story] a few times, and T Bone was back in the control booth, playing video poker. I went over and asked him what he thought, and he just said, 'You shouldn't play acoustic guitar on that. It sounds like you're not listening -- your guitar is distracting you.' That really made me mad, because I've been playing this song for years, and I always play guitar on it ... " Not by any means convinced, Carlile decided to try it his way. Putting her guitar aside, she again did the vocals -- and, fueled partly by the rage she was feeling at the producer, nailed it.

The album included a collaboration with Carlile's heroes, the Indigo Girls. Touring after the release of her debut album, she happened to perform at Eddie's Attic, a small club in Atlanta where the Indigo Girls launched their career. "Before the show, I was talking to Eddie [Owens], the owner, and I said 'I'm so excited to be playing where the Indigo Girls started out.' He laughed and pointed to a table near the stage that had a 'reserved' sign on it."

The table was reserved for Indigo Girl Emily Saliers, who had heard Carlile's music and wanted to check her out. After the show, Saliers told Carlile how impressed she was, and Carlile had her autograph that "reserved" sign. Saliers and Amy Ray were so fascinated by Carlile, they had her sing on "Last Tears," a song on the Indigo Girls' 2006 album, Despite Our Differences. In turn, the Indigo Girls made a guest appearance on The Story, singing with her on "Cannonball." "I'm lucky to be doing this at this time because really, all these women have pioneered the way for singer/songwriters and for girls to do things other than just sound and look pretty. I'm really lucky to have those kinds of role models."

In an interview k.d. lang was asked who she would choose to play her if she had a movie made about her, and she chose Brandi Carlile. Brandi was bowled over by this revelation.

"I didn't know that! Wow! Those would be really big shoes to fill; I would have to take some serious voice lessons. But then I suppose I would have to hang out with her for a long time and that would be really rough, I'd hate that … Course I'm being sarcastic ha ha because I LOVE her, yeah I think she's amazing. I'm really flattered."

As for her plans for the next record, Carlile says: "The direction that I'm going in as a writer is to be a little more reckless and less contained. Just to sort of fight against barriers because any time anything ever breaks through in music or art or film or anything, is when it's not like anything else and so it's not even about breaking through, it's in not wanting to feel repressed. So the songs that are acoustic and stripped down are going to be even more acoustic and more stripped down and the songs that are rock and roll and have an edge are gonna be even more rock and roll and have a sharper edge."

Biography by Steve Huey

After Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera was the most popular female singer of the late-'90s teen pop revival. Unlike many of her contemporaries, Aguilera was a technically skilled singer with a genuinely powerful voice, belting out her uptempo dance numbers and ballads with a diva's panache. Born Christina Maria Aguilera on December 18, 1980, on Staten Island, her parents were of Irish and Ecuadorian stock and her father's military career meant the family moved quite a bit during her childhood. They eventually settled in Pittsburgh, PA, where Aguilera began performing in talent shows at age six, with considerable success. She appeared on Star Search in 1988 (though she didn't win) and in 1992 joined the cast of the Disney Channel's The New Mickey Mouse Club, which also included Spears, future *NSYNC members Justin Timberlake and JC Chasez, and Felicity star Keri Russell.

After two years, Aguilera moved to Japan, where she recorded the hit duet "All I Wanna Do" with pop star Keizo Nakanishi. Returning to the U.S. in 1998, Aguilera recorded the song "Reflection" for Disney's Mulan; her performance helped earn her a record deal with RCA. Her self-titled debut album was released in the summer of 1999, and with teen-oriented dance-pop all the rage, the lead single "Genie in a Bottle" shot to the top of the charts for five weeks; the album also hit number one on its way to sales of over eight million copies in the U.S. alone. The follow-up, "What a Girl Wants," was the first number one single of the year 2000 and Aguilera consolidated her near-instant stardom by performing at the White House Christmas gala and the Super Bowl halftime show, and winning a Grammy for Best New Artist. Further hits followed in "I Turn to You" and another number one, "Come on Over Baby (All I Want Is You)."

In September 2000, seeking a place in that year's Latin pop boom, the part-Ecuadorian Aguilera recorded a Spanish-language album called Mi Reflejo, learning the lyrics phonetically since she didn't speak Spanish. It was followed quickly by the holiday album My Kind of Christmas; both sold extremely well, a testament to Aguilera's popularity. In the spring of 2001, Aguilera was featured — along with Pink, Mya, and Lil' Kim — on the chart-topping blockbuster remake of Patti LaBelle's "Lady Marmalade" featured on the Moulin Rouge soundtrack. Aguilera was by now a fixture at music industry awards shows; as she enjoyed her celebrity, a collection of old demos — recorded when she was 14 and 15 — was released under the title Just Be Free, despite Aguilera's vehement objections.

Aguilera attempted to deter the mass media's expectations when she issued her second studio album in fall 2002. Stripped, which appeared in October on RCA, was quickly criticized for its adult yet confident approach. Aguilera's look had gone from glossy to gritty. She appeared topless on the cover of the album and went nude for a fall issue of Rolling Stone. Debut single "Dirrty" revealed her new sexual power and became a chart smash, while "Beautiful" showed her softer side. For her next record, however, Aguilera split from producer Scott Storch and went to work with DJ Premier and Linda Perry, among others, for the 2006 Back to Basics, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. The album, a two-disc set that explored her influences, mainly '20s, '30s, and '40s jazz and blues in the style of Etta James or Billie Holiday, portrayed a more mature — yet at the same time provocative — singer. The popular single "Ain't No Other Man" won Aguilera the fourth Grammy Award of her career, and she spent much of the following year on the road, releasing the Back to Basics: Live and Down Under concert DVD to document the tour in late 2007.

Chicago - 2007 - The Best Of Chicago (40th Anniversary Limited Edition)
Genre: rock/oldies | mp3 192Kbps | 49:40 + 59:04 | 74MB + 91MB

Formed in its namesake city in 1967, Chicago is the first American band ever to chart albums in Billboard®’s Pop Top 40 in five consecutive decades. In 2002, Rhino entered into a long-term partnership with this extraordinary group to restore their extensive, genre-defying catalogue as well as develop new projects (such as 2006’s XXX, their first new studio album in a decade). Now Rhino adds to Chicago’s legacy and salutes their 40th anniversary with a newly compiled 2-CD collection that spans their entire recording history, from the stellar 1969 debut LP Chicago Transit Authority to Chicago XXX. With a career encompassing five consecutive #1 albums, 13 platinum albums, 21 Top 10 singles, and many other laurels, Chicago is among the most successfully charting American groups of all time.

George Stanford - Big Drop (2008)

George Stanford "Big Drop"
MP3 | CBR 320 Kbps 44100 Stereo | 39.10 | 89.96Mb
2008 | Genre: Rock / Pop / Americana / Songwriter

Multi-instrumental, singer-songwriter George Stanford is ready to make his full-length debut with Big Drop, an eleven-song collection that harkens back to an era when musicianship and storytelling ranked supreme.

Stanford’s first taste of music came at age 9 when he picked up the trombone- appropriate since Big Drop opens with it. The bug kicked in, and he was soon picking up any instrument around- the piano, bass, guitar. After getting kicked out of the University of the Arts in Philadelphia where he was perusing a degree in jazz performance and years on the road touring with the band Townhall, Stanford found himself living above the laundromat where he worked. Isolated from the rest of the world, he began writing songs that would eventually become Big Drop.

02 - Big Drop
03 - Get Free
04 - Nikole
05 - Downriver
06 - Loving You
07 - Let's Stay Here
