For most of the second half of the '60s, Sergio Mendes was the top-selling Brazilian artist in the United States, charting huge hit singles and LPs that regularly made the Top Five. His records with his group Brasil '66 regularly straddled the domestic pop and international markets in America, getting played heavily on AM radio stations, both rock and easy listening, and he gave his label, A&M, something to offer light jazz listeners beyond the work of the company's co-founder, Herb Alpert. During this period, he also became an international music star and one of the most popular musicians in South America.

No one more is more likely to bring "new conceptions" to Latin jazz -- a style that's evolved in fits and starts since its inception in the '40s with Machito's Afro-Cubans and Dizzy Gillespie's collaboration with Chano Pozo -- than Chucho Valdés. The Cuban piano veteran has been stretching the form for decades with Irakere, incorporating jazz harmonics, swing figures, and vocabulary with Afro-Cuban rhythm, roots, and material. His music is equal parts brain and brawn, fitting enough for this 6'5" giant with fingers that dart like hummingbirds across the keys, whose acumen seems to encompass every musical style from Yoruba chant to French Impressionism. Valdés kicks off his quartet's follow-up to the Latin Grammy winner Live at the Village Vanguard with a new version of Lecuona's "La Comparsa," which captures the fire and the grace of the quartet's interaction. Yaroldy Abreu Robles's congas and percussion are way up front, leading the music through a dynamic program that begins with stately danzón and veers off into a pulse-pounding descarga quickened by Valdés's powerful montunos and McCoy Tyner–styled piano runs. Guests on flute, cello, and sax color each selection, which range from the jazz standard "You Don't Know What Love Is" to the original "Los Guiros," which incorporates both Afro-Cuban chant and Brubeck's "Blue Rondo à La Turk." Plainly, the new conceptions at work are these kinds of stylistic mash-ups and rhythmic switches, each aiming to bridge the gap between American jazz and Cuban music through their shared African root. Abraxas is the second album by Santana, the popular latin rock n' roll group named after lead guitarist Carlos Santana. Consolidating their live success at the Woodstock Festival 1969, and the interest generated by their first album, Santana, the band took some time to issue this follow-up. Released in September 1970, the album's mix of salsa, blues, rock and roll, jazz and other influences made it a classic that defined Santana's early sound, and showed a musical maturation from their first album. Often considered Santana's greatest album[citation needed], it drew widespread appeal for its mixture of latin influences with familiar rock and roll themes such as overdriven electric guitar, organ and heavy drums. The album also demonstrates Santana's stylistic versatility, including tracks such as "Samba pa Ti" (a classic slow-burning, seductive piece)[1] and "Incident at Neshabur", both being instrumentals. The latter has several rhythm and time signature changes consistent with its jazz feel. Latin percussion ? congas, bongos and timbales, as well as a conventional rock drum setup, make this Santana's first foray into true Latin rhythm. In 2003, the album was ranked number 205 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

Caravanserai, released in October 1972, marked a major turning point in Carlos Santana's career as it was a sharp departure from his critically acclaimed first three albums. 1971 marked the departure of original bassist David Brown who was replaced by Doug Rauch and Tom Rutley. Keyboardist Gregg Rolie, who was having a falling-out with Santana, was replaced by Tom Coster on a few songs.

The sound contrasted greatly with Santana's trademark fusion of salsa, rock, and jazz, and concentrated mostly on jazz-like instrumental passages. All but three songs were instrumentals, and consequently the album yielded no hit singles. The album is the first among a series of Santana albums that were known for their increasing musical complexity, marking a move away from the popular rock format of the early Santana albums towards a more contemplative and experimental jazz sound. While Caravanserai is regarded as an artistic success, the musical changes that began on its release in 1972 marked the start of a slide in Santana's commercial popularity.
