Sonny Rollins: Saxophone Colossus (JVC XCRD Supermaster - rare!)

Sonny Rollins: Saxophone Colossus (JVC XCRD)
Jazz | 1956/2002 (JVC) | Ape | EAC Log + Cue | HQ Full Scans | 182mb

Without a doubt, one of the five best jazz albums ever made is this 1956 masterpiece. Recorded in a single day at Rudy Van Gelder's living room/studio, Sonny Rollins earned his place as a legend with "Saxophone Colossus". Aided and abetted by powerhouse drummer Max Roach, pianist Tommy Flanagan, and bassist Doug Watkins, the quartet plays with the precision of a chamber orchestra, and swings just as hard. It's not very often that you hear an album where the musicians are so in tune with each other. From the breezy sway of "St. Thomas" to the final notes of "Blue 7", Rollins and company shows how it should be done. JVC has also added a bonus track. The XRCD remastered edition finally sounds as great (or better) than the original vinyl pressing. No serious jazz fan should be without a copy of this amazing album in their collection.

Branford Marsalis Quartet - Crazy People Music (1990)

Branford Marsalis Quartet - Crazy People Music (1990)
Jazz | Columbia-1990 | 200-212 kbps mp3 | Time:01:04:38 min. | 95 Mb.

Review by Scott Yanow:
Branford Marsalis (on tenor and soprano) performs four of his originals, Bob Hurst's "The Dark Knight," Keith Jarrett's obscure "Rose Petals" and "The Ballad of Chet Kincaid" (co-written by Bill Cosby and Quincy Jones) on this outing with his 1990 quartet. It's an impressive group that also includes pianist Kenny Kirkland, bassist Hurst and drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts. "Ballad" would catch on to a general audience, but on the others Marsalis is heard throughout in prime form, sounding more original and pushing himself. AMG

Branford Marsalis - Scenes In The City (1983)
Jazz | Columbia-1983 | 320 kbps Mp3 | Time:41:02 min. | 94 Mb.

Review by Scott Yanow:
Branford Marsalis's debut as a leader is ambitious yet consistently successful. On "Scenes of the City," his narrative is in the same spirit of some of Charles Mingus's recordings of the 1950s. Otherwise the music is in the modern mainstream vein with Marsalis (on tenor and soprano) hinting strongly at Wayne Shorter and John Coltrane, along with a touch of Sonny Rollins. The backup crew includes such notable young lions as pianist Mulgrew Miller and Kenny Kirkland, bassist Charnett Moffett, and drummers Jeff "Tain" Watts and Marvin "Smitty" Smith in addition to bassist Ron Carter. It's an impressive start to a notable career. AMG

Roberta Flack - Killing Me Softly (Digitally Remastered)
Soul | CD, Covers | 60 MB | MP3 Standard, 192 kbps | 5% Recovery | 2008

The title track was another smash for Roberta Flack, and the album continued in the same tradition as Chapter Two and A Quiet Fire. She made simmering ballads, declarative message songs, and better-than-average up-tempo numbers, and at the time was among the top-selling female vocalists in any style. ~ Ron Wynn, All Music Guide

Jazz/Funk | 1CD | MP3 CBR 192 Kbps | 62.3 MB
Label: Verve Records | Language: English

Part of a dual release with the RH Factor's Distractions, this Quintet recording kicks off with Leo Quintero's sizzling title track and the upbeat tempo continues throughout with such songs as Burno's "Devil Eyes" and Matthews' driving "Salima's Dance." Connie Evingson - Let It Be Jazz:Connie Evingson Sings The Beatles
Vocal Jazz, Pop Jazz | Summit-September 2, 2003 | 192kbps Mp3 | Time: 66:32 min. | 90.8 MB

Review:
Let It Be Jazz is jazz vocalist Connie Evingson's most enjoyable work to date. It certainly helps that the source material is the songs of John Lennon and Paul McCartney, but her willingness to venture beyond the usual "red album"/"blue album" fare gives some welcome exposure to such gems as "The Night Before" and "For No One" (both gorgeously accompanied by piano). Evingson seems utterly at home, gently swinging "From Me to You" and laying down a funky groove in "Fixing a Hole." Also fun is the playful instrumentation, which includes a sitar for "Blackbird" and a bandoneon for a delicious "When I'm 64" that seems to anticipate a joyous old age filled with tango and romance. --David Horiuchi

Patricia Barber - Modern Cool (MFSL DSD UDSACD 2003)
Wav | Cue + Log | 735 MB | No Covers | 1998

Chicago pianist and vocalist Patricia Barber is making lots of ears burn. Her torch song touch speaks volumes to jazz vocal fanatics, but she has an adventuresome side that speaks likewise to fans of woollier jazz. Barber's vocal delivery is swaggering and burnished, always angling against oddball time signatures and often dropping weird lyrical science. From e.e. cummings poems, Barber moves into prescient observations on our society: "For company in the 21st century," she sings, "I go to the club, talk through the show / I'm so hip there's nothing about jazz / That I don't know." Trumpeter Dave Douglas and guitarist John McLean add a sharp edge, and the Choral Thunder Vocal Choir give Modern Cool soul-drenched dynamics that push the CD into the realm of instant classics.

Chet Baker and Art Pepper - The Route (1956)

Chet Baker and Art Pepper - The Route (1956)
MP3 | 320kbps | Covers | RS.com | 124mb
Genre: Jazz / cool, West Coast
Recording Date: July 26, 1956 | Venue: Forum Theatre, Los Angeles
Time: 52:28 | Label: Pacific Jazz

Allmusic.com:
This 1989 CD issue compiles all known sides cut during a July 26, 1956, session led by Chet Baker (trumpet) and Art Pepper (alto sax). Keen-eyed enthusiasts will note that this particular date occurred during a remarkable week -- July 23 through July 31 -- of sessions held at the behest of Pacific Jazz label owner and session producer Dick Bock at the Forum Theater in Los Angeles. The recordings made during this week not only form The Route, but three other long-players as well: Lets Get Lost (The Best of Chet Baker Sings), Chet Baker and Crew, and Chet Baker Quintet at the Forum Theatre. Likewise, these were the first sides cut by Baker since returning from his triumphant and extended stay in Europe. The Route compiles all 11 tracks by the sextet featuring Richie Kamuca (tenor sax), Pete Jolly (piano), Leroy Vinnegar (bass), and Stan Levey (drums) in support of Baker and Pepper. Bock had no immediate plans to use these recordings for any one album; that is to say he incorporated the tracks throughout various compilations released on Pacific Jazz. Three months later, however, Baker and Pepper did record with completely different personnel for the expressed purpose of issuing what would become known as Playboys and alternately Picture of Heath. Perhaps encouraged by the swinging interaction on Pepper's "Tynan Time" and "Minor Yours," both tracks were featured at this session as well as during the Picture of Heath collaboration. There are a few unexpected moments of sheer brilliance spread throughout, such as the Baker-penned title track, which contains supple and nicely contrasting solos from Kamuca and Vinnegar -- whose solid pendulum accuracy swings all through this collection. The Route is recommended for completists as well as curious consumers wishing to expand their knowledge of the light and airy rhythms that typify the cool West Coast jazz scene of the mid-'50s.

[...] One of Shorter's best-selling albums from the 1970s was Native Dancer, a Brazilian-oriented jazz-fusion masterpiece that boasts Herbie Hancock on acoustic piano and electric keyboards, and employs such Brazilian talent as singer Milton Nascimento (a superstar in Brazil) and percussionist Airto Moreira. Everything on this melodic, consistently lyrical effort is a jewel, and that includes Hancock's "Joanna's Theme" as well as pieces by Nascimento ("From the Lonely Afternoons," "Ponta de Areia," "Tarde," "Lilia," and "Miracle of the Fishes") and by Shorter himself ("Ana Maria," "Beauty and the Beast," and "Diana"). Reissued on CD by Columbia in 1990, Native Dancer is clearly among Shorter's most essential albums.

The Mahavishnu Orchestra - The Inner Mounting Flame [Speakers Corner 180g LP] 24-bit/96kHz

The Mahavishnu Orchestra feat. John McLaughlin - The Inner Mounting Flame
Speakers Corner 180g LP / Columbia PC 31067
Mastered by Maarten de Boer@ EBS, Hannover

Viny rip in 24-bit/96kHz | FLAC (cue, m3u, Log) | Artwork
~980 mb incl recovery | RS & Enteruplod | Jazz, Fusion | 1972

Allmusic.com rating: 5 out of 5 Stars Review!

Speakers Corner’s 180g reissue is slightly thicker and richer sounding than the thin, bass shy original. A case could be made for either one being superior but ultimately I think the reissue wins for its improved bottom end, greater three-dimensionality and overall harmonic completeness. It even comes with a reproduction of the original’s insert. Like the sonic comparison, the reissue’s insert is thicker and more vibrant than the original.
Excerpt from Michael Fremer's review

This is the album that made John McLaughlin a semi-household name, a furious, high-energy, yet rigorously conceived meeting of virtuosos that, for all intents and purposes, defined the fusion of jazz and rock a year after Miles Davis' Bitches Brew breakthrough. It also inadvertently led to the derogatory connotation of the word fusion, for it paved the way for an army of imitators, many of whose excesses and commercial panderings devalued the entire movement.
Though much was made of the influence of jazz-influenced improvisation in the Mahavishnu band, it is the rock element that predominates, stemming directly from the electronic innovations of Jimi Hendrix. The improvisations, particularly McLaughlin's post-Hendrix machine-gun assaults on double-necked electric guitar and Jerry Goodman's flights on electric violin, owe more to the freakouts that had been circulating in progressive rock circles than to jazz, based as they often are on ostinatos on one chord.
These still sound genuinely thrilling today, as McLaughlin and Goodman battle Jan Hammer's keyboards, Rick Laird's bass, and especially Billy Cobham's hard-charging drums, whose jazz-trained technique pushed the envelope for all rock drummers. What doesn't date so well are the composed medium- and high-velocity unison passages that are played in such tight lockstep that they can't breathe. There is also time out for quieter, reflective numbers that are drenched in studied spirituality ("A Lotus on Irish Streams") or irony ("You Know You Know"); McLaughlin was to do better in that department with less-driven colleagues elsewhere in his career.
Aimed with absolute precision at young rock fans, this record was wildly popular in its day, and it may have been the cause of more blown-out home amplifiers than any other record this side of Deep Purple.

Chet Baker – Comin’ On With The Chet Baker Quintet (1965) (Remastered)

Chet Baker – Comin’ On With The Chet Baker Quintet (1965) (Remastered)
MP3 | 320kbps | Covers & Scans | RS.com | 102mb
Genre: Jazz/ cool, West Coast
Recording Date: Aug 23-25, 1965 | Time: 40:49 | Label: Prestige/OJC

In 1964, trumpeter Chet Baker returned to the United States after five sometimes-traumatic years spent overseas (which included a long stay in an Italian jail for drug abuse). Baker recorded prolifically during his first 14 months back in the States, including a set for Colpix, two records for Limelight, and, in a busy three-day period, five albums for Prestige titled Groovin', Comin' On, Cool Burnin', Smokin', and Boppin' With the Chet Baker Quintet…

Chetbakertribute.com:

For 3 amazing days in August, 1965, Chet laid down 32 tracks for Prestige. He's backed by an experienced band featuring George Coleman (who played in Miles Davis' band) on Tenor Sax. Baker does surprising well, considering he's working with unfamiliar musicians and mostly original material , lots of hard-bop tunes penned by Richard Carpenter and Tadd Dameron. The LP titles (Groovin', Comin' On, Cool Burnin', Smokin' and Boppin') and art work were a blatant rip-off of similarly-packaged Miles Davis recordings, such as Walkin' and Workin'. This would be Chet's last great studio work until his 1974 comeback.

Weather Report - Heavy Weather [1997 Mastersound SBM CD]
EAC wavpack | Log + Cue | No Scans | ~ 240 Mb | RS
Original 1977 | 37:39 min | Jazz Fusion

Weather Report reached its critical and commercial peak with Heavy Weather. No other Weather Report album received as many awards as Heavy Weather. It was recognized as jazz "album of the year" by virtually every publication that gave out such an award. It destroyed the competition in Down Beat's annual reader's poll, topping Herbie Hancock's runner-up album V.S.O.P. for album of the year by a margin of 844 to 196 votes. Likewise, Weather Report was overwhelmingly voted jazz group of the year by Down Beat's readers, receiving 1418 votes to 277 for second place Return to Forever. Heavy Weather was awarded a five-star review in Down Beat, making it the group's third consecutive five-star album (and also the last). Even the album cover art by Lou Beach was nominated for a Grammy. Heavy Weather was also Weather Report's best selling record. It reached number 30 on the Billboard pop chart, quickly sold nearly half a million copies, and has subsequently gone gold (signifying sales of 500,000 copies). In his January 2001 Down Beat retrospective on the band, Josef Woodard said, "In 2000, Heavy Weather still sounds like a milestone in the cultural unconscious of jazz history. By some accounts, the album is the crowning achievement of the band's recorded output, and therefore, by extension, a towering landmark of 'fusion." MasterSound releases are 24-karat gold CDs remastered from first-generation masters. This process utilizes 20-bit technology and Sony's "Super Bit Mapping" system.

Carlos Augusto Santana Alves (born July 20, 1947 in Jalisco, Mexico) is a Grammy Award-winning Mexican rock musician and guitarist. He became famous in the late 1960s and early 1970s with his band, Santana, which created a highly successful blend of rock, salsa, and jazz fusion. The band's sound featured his melodic, blues-based guitar lines set against Latin percussion such as timbales and congas. Santana continued to work in these forms over the following decades. He experienced a sudden resurgence of popularity and critical acclaim in the late 1990s. Rolling Stone also named Santana number 15 on their list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time in 2003.
