Lifes Rich Pageant is the fourth album by the American band R.E.M. and was released in 1986. Intended as an upbeat reaction to the sobering and historical Fables of the Reconstruction, R.E.M. chose Don Gehman to produce the album at his Belmont Mall Studios in Belmont, Indiana. The source for the title of the album is based on an English idiom. Its use is very old, but R.E.M.'s use (minus the apostrophe) is, according to Peter Buck, from the 1964 film A Shot in the Dark: Inspector Clouseau opens car door and falls into a fountain. Maria: "You should get out of these clothes immediately. You'll catch your death of pneumonia, you will." Clouseau: "Yes, I probably will. But it's all part of life's rich pageant, you know?" The missing apostrophe in the title is deliberate. Nearly all contractions used by R.E.M. lack apostrophes. The cover of the album depicts drummer Bill Berry in heavy make-up on the upper part of the cover and a pair of bison, signifying an environmental theme, on the lower part. It also alludes to Buffalo Bill.

The Birthday Party were one of the darkest and most challenging post-punk groups to emerge in the early '80s, creating bleak and noisy soundscapes that provided the perfect setting for vocalist Nick Cave's difficult, disturbing stories of religion, violence, and perversity.
There are 13 tracks on the CD. Five songs have been taken from the original 1979 Hee haw EP, five songs from the bands first two 7" EP's and the final three songs from the bands Australian LP aptly named 'The Birthday Party'.

The initial tracks on Hee-Haw come from two of their earliest proper Birthday Party singles, "Mr. Clarinet" and "The Friend Catcher." Three other tracks included on the 1980 self-titled American-only compilation, the squealing sax and raunch of "Hats on Wrong," the slightly more straightforward punch and thrash of "Guilt Parade," and "Riddle House," surface as well. All showcase the violent, thrashing energy of the Party of legend perfectly; even the organ on "Mr. Clarinet" sounds like it's being strangled as much as being played. Cave may be in utterly hyperdramatic mode throughout, spitting out barks on "Happy Birthday" and braying out the title call on the slow, brilliant burn of "The Friend Catcher," but the band aren't holding back either; Howard's spindly, aggro guitar work complements Calvert's drum punch nicely, balancing nerves and body slam, while Pew and Harvey flesh out everything else in the same spirit. Things aren't quite on the level of sheer sonic pain of later releases, but with the help of engineer Tony Cohen, who brings out the overall performances well, the fivesome is already well on its curious way. The last five songs come from the original Hee-Haw EP, which was also the final Boys Next Door release. While not quite as frazzled as what the group would soon fully mutate into, the tracks do have a more pushing, discordant air than the earlier Boys tracks, Cave still hesitant at points but starting to let go a bit elsewhere. "Faint Heart" has a great breakdown into random vocal mumblings and instrumental nuttiness, especially on piano, while "The Hair Shirt" especially is already the Birthday Party in anything but name.

Tragic events inspire Butch Walker to make his best album to date. When we last touched base with Walker in 2006, he was busy critiquing Hollywood from the inside, through the eyes of a country boy and rock n’ roller embroiled in the glitzy, sordid surreality of LA’s elite party scene.

Late last year, however, his life in LA came to a dramatic halt when bush fires in Malibu burned his rented condo to the ground, destroying almost everything he owned and every master tape he’d ever recorded. Amid this chaos, he appears to have suffered a relationship crisis of some sort- either he was at breaking point or very close to it- and it was this clusterfuck of emotions that gave birth to Sycamore Meadows, the best single record of his opinion to date.

Sycamore Meadows is heavily informed by Walker’s fire experience, but the specific themes are far more relatable: stories of heartache, loss and loneliness, along with the obligatory scene critique for good measure.

For the second album in succession, Sycamore Meadows features guest vocals by pop singer P!nk, who appears on album highlight (and potentially Butch’s best ever creation) ‘Here Comes The...’ She doesn’t add an awful lot to the track- she’s only there to provide colour- but what she does she does well. Sitting on top of a funky acoustic guitar groove, the lyrics perfectly capture the fear and helplessness that is felt when a relationship seems to be on the road to collapse.

Sycamore Meadows is an album that was born from heartache, and it’s on the saddest and most visceral numbers that the album truly shines, and perhaps gives some validity to that old lie about art.

The best Americana songs all have one thing in common: someone has to get shot.

Singer/songwriter Hang Jones took this to heart when writing the songs for his debut album, The Ballad of Carlsbad County. What began as a collection of bluegrass inspired country-rock songs evolved into a Western Outlaw-themed story album complete with hangings, gunfights, sex, and revenge. Jones credits two of his songs as catalysts for inspiring him to write a concept record. "When I began writing material for the new record, ‘Caroline’ and ‘Red’ were my favorites. I liked them for their cinematic quality, and they were a lot of fun to sing, but when I noticed that they could be chapters in a much larger story, I got really excited about rewriting all the other tunes to fit into the story."

The album chronicles the life and fall of William Bishop. Born the son of a notorious outlaw, William, at an early age, witnesses his father’s capture and hanging. He spends his developmental years wrestling with the stigma of his father’s crimes (and punishment) while his mother stresses that William’s fate is not the same as his father’s. “I liked the idea of playing with free will versus destiny. Put the protagonist into situations where if he does what he feels is morally right, he will eventually wind up on the same road as his father, a man he himself views as amoral.”

Jones is no newcomer to cinematic songwriting. His songs have been featured in the film “American Venus” (2007), as well as NBC prime time television shows “Friday Night Lights,” “The Black Donnellys,” and “Quarterlife.” Jones is also a skilled front man; honing his live performances in his Americana rock band Del Bombers, opening for such legendary acts as Social Distortion, The Blasters, and The Cadillac Tramps as well as several headlining North American tours.

To promote his latest creation Jones has embraced the many tools available on the web to get his music to his fans. The new Hang Jones material will be released in installments on his web site, as well as several peer to peer and social networking sites. Modeled after an old radio serial show, each new track is a chapter in the story, taking William, and the listener, to the inevitable crossroads where our hero will have to decide his own fate: hang like his father, or live free like his mother taught him. While taking on such a massive undertaking for an indie artist appears daunting, Jones remains fervently optimistic that his message, and songs, will be heard. "Success or failure for indie artists is entirely up to them. Historically, we have never been on such even footing with the record companies. So let the majors keep trying to sell us the same old fluff we don’t want; I’ll focus on getting really cool, high-concept music to the fans that will want to hear it.”

Part pop, part post-punk, part poet for the disillusioned under the Thatcher regime, Matt Johnson's The The were an uncompromising collective who defied simple pigeonholing. 'Soul Mining' is perhaps Johnson's most accessible work, helped in no small part by the commercial appeal of verse-chorus songs like 'Perfect', 'This Is The Day' (aided by both accordion and flute) and 'Uncertain Smile' which - featuring a glorious piano coda - contains Jools Holland's most valuable contribution to a piece of music. Otherwise the remainder of the album ripples with menace and tension; as Johnson broods and snarls his way through diatribes of self-doubt ("How can anyone know me, when I don't even know myself") and thinly-veiled attacks on the powers that be ("I'm just a symptom of the moral decay that's gnawing at the heart of the country"). As outstanding musically as it is angry, 'Soul Mining' is a landmark 80's album.
