The Mahavishnu Orchestra feat. John McLaughlin - The Inner Mounting Flame
Speakers Corner 180g LP / Columbia PC 31067
Mastered by Maarten de Boer@ EBS, Hannover

Viny rip in 24-bit/96kHz | FLAC (cue, m3u, Log) | Artwork

Allmusic.com rating: 5 out of 5 Stars Review!

Speakers Corner’s 180g reissue is slightly thicker and richer sounding than the thin, bass shy original. A case could be made for either one being superior but ultimately I think the reissue wins for its improved bottom end, greater three-dimensionality and overall harmonic completeness. It even comes with a reproduction of the original’s insert. Like the sonic comparison, the reissue’s insert is thicker and more vibrant than the original.
Excerpt from Michael Fremer's review

This is the album that made John McLaughlin a semi-household name, a furious, high-energy, yet rigorously conceived meeting of virtuosos that, for all intents and purposes, defined the fusion of jazz and rock a year after Miles Davis' Bitches Brew breakthrough. It also inadvertently led to the derogatory connotation of the word fusion, for it paved the way for an army of imitators, many of whose excesses and commercial panderings devalued the entire movement.
Though much was made of the influence of jazz-influenced improvisation in the Mahavishnu band, it is the rock element that predominates, stemming directly from the electronic innovations of Jimi Hendrix. The improvisations, particularly McLaughlin's post-Hendrix machine-gun assaults on double-necked electric guitar and Jerry Goodman's flights on electric violin, owe more to the freakouts that had been circulating in progressive rock circles than to jazz, based as they often are on ostinatos on one chord.
These still sound genuinely thrilling today, as McLaughlin and Goodman battle Jan Hammer's keyboards, Rick Laird's bass, and especially Billy Cobham's hard-charging drums, whose jazz-trained technique pushed the envelope for all rock drummers. What doesn't date so well are the composed medium- and high-velocity unison passages that are played in such tight lockstep that they can't breathe. There is also time out for quieter, reflective numbers that are drenched in studied spirituality ("A Lotus on Irish Streams") or irony ("You Know You Know"); McLaughlin was to do better in that department with less-driven colleagues elsewhere in his career.
Aimed with absolute precision at young rock fans, this record was wildly popular in its day, and it may have been the cause of more blown-out home amplifiers than any other record this side of Deep Purple.

Carlos Augusto Santana Alves (born July 20, 1947 in Jalisco, Mexico) is a Grammy Award-winning Mexican rock musician and guitarist. He became famous in the late 1960s and early 1970s with his band, Santana, which created a highly successful blend of rock, salsa, and jazz fusion. The band's sound featured his melodic, blues-based guitar lines set against Latin percussion such as timbales and congas. Santana continued to work in these forms over the following decades. He experienced a sudden resurgence of popularity and critical acclaim in the late 1990s. Rolling Stone also named Santana number 15 on their list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time in 2003. ~ Notes / Reviews ~

On the “Emotions” CD, Polish female guitarist, Krzysia Górniak, delivers a stylistics fusion of jazz, which presents an original mixture of jazz with elements funk, soul, pop, and even Latin American music. This polished jazz with improvisations that is very rhythmical, addictive and unpretentious. One can compare the band style, sound and latest production to that of the Metheny Group and Pat Metheny & Anna Maria Jopek. Krzysia Górniak’s talent is exceptional as she plays with delicacy, femininity, and unusual virtuosity. She is a renowned and highly valued jazz guitarist in the Polish and European jazz scene. The band performs a modern and dynamic sound of jazz fusion. Their concerts are the feast for the ears, where compositions full of quick masterful fragments alternate with warm, sensuous ballads. Their virtuosic approach to instruments meets with unusual lyrical themes and with the coloristic wealth sound. Krzysia Górniak’s supporting case consists of Zdzislaw Kalinowski - Piano, Filip Sojka - Bass Guitar, and Przemek Knopik - Percussion. -- Enjoy!

Genre: Jazz, Fusion, World Fusion

I didn't really think there was a need to introduce Codona. Just in case, I looked up the wikipedia and they had this to say:
Codona was a free jazz and world fusion group which released three self-titled albums for Polygram Records/ECM Records in 1978, 1980 and 1982. The trio consisted of Don Cherry, Collin Walcott, and Nana Vasconcelos.

The name of the group is derived from the first two letters of each of the member's first names.

My guess is that most of the people who read this post could add a lot more about Codona than these two short paragraphs suggest.

Pastorius / Metheny / Bley / Ditmas - "JACO" (1974) (1994)

Pastorius / Metheny / Bley / Ditmas - "JACO" (1974) (1994)
Flac Individual Files: 235 Mb | Mp3 (320 Kbps): 84.3 Mb | Original Release Date: June 16, 1974 | Label: Jazz Door
Audio CD (February 21, 1994) - ASIN: B000003ZW9 - Jazz, Post Bop, Fusion

Although one often thinks of Jaco Pastorius' first solo album as being 1976's Jaco on Epic, producer/keyboardist Paul Bley actually gave Pastorius his first chance to lead a recording two years earlier. Coincidentally titled Jaco, this spontaneous set (which has been reissued on CD) is also significant for being among guitarist Pat Metheny's first recordings; completing the quartet are Bley on electric piano and drummer Bruce Ditmas. The music consists of three songs by Bley, five from Carla Bley, and "Blood" by Annette Peacock. Pastorius sounds quite powerful, but Metheny's tone is kind of bizarre, very distorted and not at all distinctive at this point. The recording quality is a bit shaky throughout the electronic set, and the group does not quite live up to its potential, but Pastorius shows that he was already an innovative player, making this a CD of historic interest.
The negative reviews on this page simply prove that many of the lovers of so-called "jazz-rock fusion" lack any sensitivity to the language of "jazz." Jaco was certainly one of the greats, but like others of his generation such as Stanley Clarke, Al Dimeola and others, he was frequently capable of degenerating into empty displays of abundant chops. His compositions ran the gamut from the sublimely inspired to the pedestrian. Most of the showcases of his virtuosity find him in the light fusion or instrumental pop settings of Joni Mitchell or late Weather Report. Can Jaco's fans broaden their ears beyond the same old versions of "Birdland," "Teen Town," "Blackbird" and bad Jimi Hendrix imitations? In my opinion, there are very few documents of Jaco actually using his electric bass to play in what I would consider a real jazz context, and this CD gives us such a rare opportunity. The compositions range from abstract but composed works by Carla Bley and Annette Peacock, to free blowing sessions. Although all the musicians on this date are virtuosos, neither Jaco or any of the other players are going to blow you over with chops here, this is a session in which the players weave organic compositions with great sensitivity and group interplay. On the other hand, they do take solos which are excellent and musical. Paul Bley has gone on record saying that he feels this was one the first recordings to blend the language of late 60s free-jazz with electric instruments. In this light, the recording is a masterpiece and has much to offer. Ignore the simple-minded comments - there is a huge amount to love and learn from this recording. It is one of the great unsung works of electric jazz.

Tony Sidney: acoustic & electric guitars, bongos (9)
Giovanni Tommaso: vocals, bass, double bass, Moog (1-4-8), percussion (2) + Mandrake: percussion (2), congas (4)

Pioneers of Italian jazz-rock from the 1970's, PERIGEO were often compared to early BRAND X & actually as innovative as WEATHER REPORT, with a very full sound,
featuring bass, keyboards, drums, guitar and saxes. Their music was only comprised between jazz-rock and straight jazz with a dynamic mix of spacey sounds, no prog influences
whatsoever. No need to precise that each instrumentalist is strongly competent in their respective domains!

Their best works are usually considered "Genealogia" and "La Valle Dei Templi". The band split after their fifth album and reunited some years later for the ambitious
"Alice" double album. From the LP "Alice", the band became more commercial.

Miles Davis - Get Up With It (2cd)

Miles Davis - Get Up With It [1974]
APE & MP3 + CUE + LOG | TT 124:05 | Full artwork @ 300dpi
APE = 765 mb | MP3 (lame --preset standard) = 178 mb
Jazz / Fusion / Jazz-Rock / Jazz-Funk

This may be the most "commercial" sounding of all of Miles' electric records from the '70s, but it still sounds out there, alien, and futuristic in all the best ways, and Get Up with It is perhaps just coming into its own here in the 21st century.

Without a doubt, one of the greatest albums of them all, a double set only comparable to the likes of the Stooges' "Funhouse" in its darkness, intensity and raw, funky sexuality. Now for starters let's get something straight: I loathe "fusion", and to even CONSIDER putting Miles' music of the '70s in that category - a genre filled with lilly-livered chumps like Return To Forever and the Yellow Jackets - is a great disservice to Miles and his music. From 1969 to '75, Mr. Davis pioneered and created his own unique sounds, a mixture of hard funk, psychedelic rock, avant-garde electronics and free jazz, that has never been equalled in regards to its sonics or its "vibe". There is NOTHING that can touch the raised-middle-finger jab in the guts felt when one puts on discs like "Dark Magus", "Live Evil", "Agharta", "Big Fun" or "On The Corner". The feelings of utter loathing and despair, the overwhelming EMOTION of these discs can be too much, yet nothing can prepare you for 1974's "Get Up With It", a disc of such wildness and total lack of any commercial forethought (and thank the heavens for that) that it was granted pretty much instant deletion upon release and has mainly only been available from Japan for the last 25 years. Start with the cover: a big, slightly unflattering, grainy photo of The Man. It's the sight of a man against the world, battling for his own identity. Hit the first track, "He Loved Him Madly" (a tribute to Duke Ellington), a 32-minute ambient piece only broken up occasionally by Peter Cosey's mumbling guitar lines. It's one of the saddest damn songs you'll ever hear, and you can bet yer booty that if it was made by a bunch of white guys in Berlin ca. '71, every Krautrock freak in town would be hailing it as a classic. Next track "Maiysha" is a schizophrenic one. For ten minutes in merely putters along like a lite Latin number, interrupted sporadically by Miles' Sun Ra-like organ, then it stops, gets into a hard groove and proceeds to move along to Peter Cosey's awesome guitar screeches for another five minutes. Hot. "Honky Tonk" is up next, a brief interlude of stop-start rhythms and noisy organ crunch. It prepares you for the next track the unstoppable "Rated X", THE peak of Miles' - or maybe anyone's - sonic capabilities. Part hyperdive breakbeat rhthyms, part uber-funk, and nine parts pure noise, there is no other sound on earth as MOVING as this song. Get up with it. Disc two starts with "Calypso Frelimo", another 32-minute piece that starts where "Rated X" finishes off. Ecstatic peaks of dark psychedelic jamming, aided by Miles' wah-wah'd trumpet, gel and compete. "Red China Blues" is a brief number that kicks it in a Chess-Records-meets-Ornette way, and the 15-minute+ "Mtume" once again takes you for a ride with its collision of Cosey's guitar (a highly under-rated player in a field with the likes of Sonny Sharrock) and about half a dozen percussionists. Finishing is "Billy Preston", more chilling mid-range avant-funk to close the set. "Get Up With It" is the perfect summation of what was filling Miles' head at the time: the avant electronics of Stockhausen, the cyclical funk of James Brown, the wailing psych guitar of Hendrix, the improvised freeness of Ornette Coleman and as The Man himself put it, "a deep African thing". Many words have been written on Miles' music of this period, but to really GET it, you have to LISTEN to it. Not a word is spoken on GUWI, yet it speaks volumes on its creator's alienation and sense of despair. As far as so-called "out-rock" goes, this is about as "out" as you could get, and certainly about as purely "psychedelic" as music has ever gotten, so do the done thing and get with it. Steve Smith, Oteil Burbridge, Howard Levy & Jerry Goodman - The Stranger's Hand

Steve Smith, Oteil Burbridge, Howard Levy & Jerry Goodman - The Stranger's Hand
Audio CD: Lossless | EAC/FLAC | Separate Files | 4 Files (rar) | 330 MB | Rapidshare
Album Art: Full Scans | 300 dpi
Genre: Jazz-Rock Fusion| Instrumental

Drummer Steve Smith's ToneCenter label continues to rescue jazz fusion from the doghouse of jazz history with The Stranger's Hand, a high-octane quartet affair that features Smith alongside former Mahavishnu Orchestra violinist Jerry Goodman, Allman Brothers bassist Oteil Burbridge, and multi-instrumentalist Howard Levy. Composed spontaneously in the studio over the span of several days, The Stranger's Hand doesn't pull any punches from the first lightning-fast unison runs of "Brick Chicken." It also isn't afraid to show its early-fusion influence, with several tracks uncannily echoing the early Mahavishnu Orchestra. Part of "Glimmer of Hope" is almost a dead ringer for "Dance of the Maya" from Inner Mounting Flame, and there are times when Goodman seems to be doing his best fleet-fingered John McLaughlin imitation. Still, if anyone can pull that off, it's Goodman, whose range on electric and acoustic violin is still extraordinary--he's equally adept at the searing electric-fusion runs of "Caliente" as he is on the bluegrass-New Orleans feel of "Sufferin' Catfish" and the straightahead jazz of "Elvin." Also, there are other spices here that make the disc distinctive, from Burbridge's George Benson -esque scat soloing on "Pinky's Revenge" to the harmonica of Levy (who also doubles on keyboards) that sometimes lends the group a bluesier, more countrified sound.

Mark Norgaard - Tolerance

Mark Norgaard - Tolerance (2007)

Audio CD: Lossless | EAC/FLAC | Separate Files | 3 Files (rar) | rapidshare
Album Art: Front Cover | Genre: Jazz-Rock Fusion

Drumming wizard Marc Norgaard delivers an album of all-original instrumental tracks demonstrating his uncanny ability to weave styles and find new directions in music. Supported by two of the top guitarists in the world for the genre, Brett Garsed (Planet X, Virgil Donati), and Frank Gambale (Chick Corea Elektric Band), along with pianist Steve Hunt (Allan Holdsworth), and bass phenomenon Dave DeMarco, Marc takes a creative new musical direction that will delight fans of Progressive Rock as well as Jazz Fusion. National Guitar Workshop star Tobias Hurwitz makes a guest appearance. Marc's drumming on this CD ranges from subtle, sensitive jazz moves on the riveted ride cymbal all the way to heavy-hitting double-kick patterns. He moves through odd-time signatures with ease, keeping the tracks exciting with innovative drum fills that ooze with spontaneity and style, allowing his compositions to shine. Garsed's lyrical and melodic lead playing is highlighted against the tight, explorative rhythms produced by Norgaard and DeMarco. Fusion legends Hunt and Gambale are featured more prominently on the lighter tunes, rounding out the album with solos both beautiful and chop-blazing. Norgaard's own solo's are brief and tasteful with an astonishing display of technical prowess, mastery of odd-time signatures, and the double-kick drums; all with a freedom normally only heard from avant-garde jazz players. A veritable schooling in technique from these fine musicians will satisfy even the stoutest of instrumental music fans. If you are looking for new musical avenues, this CD belongs in your cart!

Chamber Jazz / Klezmer / Modern Creative / World Fusion

I gambled bucks on this album - it's a full-priced new CD, I heard no samples on Amazon (nor anywhere else on the web), and I knew no one who owned it. I bought it solely on the reputation of Tzadik's Radical Jewish Culture series, the fact that I love klezmer, and the notion that I have most recently fascinated by the accordion.

The gamble paid off with a rich, eclectic sound that includes not only the accordion, but also a pump organ, piano, prepared and toy pianos, celeste, glockenspiel, chamberlain, orchestron, Hammond S-6 organ, claviola, bass harmonica, marxophone, Indian banjo, casio, shortwave, and music boxes. The melody from the song Below Delancey sounds like it's being played on a clarinet, yet no clarinet is listed on the CD notes. It remains a fascinating mystery to me! Other performers on the album include the very talented Greg Cohen on bass and Kenny Wollesen on percussion. What is astounding is that in many songs, one would swear an entire orchestra is playing, not just three men.

Although the album could be generally labeled as jazzy klezmer, each song demands respect on its own accord. Ringling Kid feels like one is immersed in a slow-motion dream. With its title, I almost think of it as a nostalgic look at a child attending a Ringling Brothers and Barnum Bailey circus - it's a slow song with beautiful low sounds punctuated by some gentle high notes of a keyboard. I think of Tinker Bell waving her wand over the low sounds of an elephant majestically sauntering down a red carpet.

I couldn't begin to guess what instruments are sung on Arturo, The Aqua Boy. I'm sure I detect the toy piano among other eclectic keyboards. The song sounds like a music box opening or perhaps a prelude to what lies inside Pandora's Box. One is not quite sure what lies beyond the immediate moment. An odd, but strangely addictive little tune. The title of the song is rather puzzling, which, upon reflection, neatly befits the song!
Linguist from Latvia suggests some mystery that I should solve. A piano figures prominently in the melody, and I feel the sense that someone is just lurking around the corner in a thick fog, waiting to deliver some classified information.

Mem evokes a slightly more traditional approach to klezmer music. I feel I'm on a quiet little corner in the Jewish Quarter of Prague with this tune. It's neither fast-paced nor slow. For some reason, I think of older people when I hear this song, though I mean that in no derogatory sense at all. There's just a flavor of experience and tradition infused here - almost like an older generation handing down a tradition of joyful and yet sorrowful culture to a younger generation. The message to me is, "Here is your foundation. What you do with it creates the legacy that you give your children."

Constantinople with a fairly strong percussion and (what sounds like) accordion gives a strong image of traditional dress and dance. It sounds like a song that would be played at a festival celebrating Eastern European ethnic sounds and holidays. I sense lots of beer and women's skirts flowing from the breeze created by its energetic vibes.

Aveenu Malkenu (sounds like) a solo accordion piece that is played so intimately that I almost feel guilty for intruding. I imagine someone in the middle of the night, during a full moon, playing all by himself without another human in sight. I'm not familiar with the tune, but it's a traditional song that Rob Burger interprets very beautifully in this version. It's one of my favorite songs on the album.

For a fan of klezmer, this is a wonderful new approach to a traditional form. If you're tired of predictable music that leaves almost nothing to the imagination, this album paints some evocative imagery whose boundaries are only limited by what you set. Rob Burger displays a great deal of talent on this CD with both his mastery of instrumentation and his original compositions. I'm glad I took a gamble because this CD never accumulates dust on my shelves.

Carlos’ collaboration with John McLaughlin was followed by another “solo” album one year later with John Coltrane’s widow “Turiya” Alice, a Sri Chinmoy follower like “Mahavishnu”. Carlos’ spiritual formation continued, and the solo projects were the main musical domain of experimentation to give expression to his spiritual experiences. Carlos became more and more concerned with music that expresses the “everlasting”, as he called it himself, that is “cooked by the essence of spirituality”. In 1974, Carlos was inspired by Indian and Brazilian music for his solo album Illuminations and Borboletta with the band later that year, respectively. As on Carlos’ previous solo album Love Devotion Surrender, Illuminations was the result of a collaboration between several members of the Santana band and jazz musicians. Beside keyboardist Tom Coster and percussionist Armando Peraza, Illuminations features Jules Broussard on sax, Alice Coltrane on harp and keyboard, David Holland on bass, Jack DeJohnette on drums (both veterans of the Miles Davis electric bands), Phil Ford on tabla and Phil Browne added some tamboura drone. The resulting album consists of five tracks, which, apart from the short opening track Guru Sri Chinmoy Aphorism, is entirely instrumental. The compositions on Illuminations are almost all from Santana and Coster, with the exception of the track Bliss: The Eternal Now, which is composed by Alice Coltrane. The musical approach has changed considerably since Carlos’ previous collaborative work. The fast runs that characterize Love Devotion Surrender now make space for long, sustained one-note riffs, a shift that is also evident on the band’s album Borboletta. It typifies Carlos’ changing musical approach, which was becoming more direct and explicit in terms of spirituality. Carlos’ albums gradually seem to cover a path of growing spiritual independence. From the teachings of Sri Chinmoy it seems that Carlos is developing a view of his own. This becomes more evident on the subsequent album Borboletta, with Christian sounding songs like Life Is Anew. Illuminations may be conceived of as an ode to life and its creation. A part of the scatters of words in the Sri Chinmoy Aphorism seems to be pointing at the “breath of life”. The album then proceeds with Angel of Air, which opens with a beautiful haunting flute solo played by Jules Broussard. Although almost all compositions are from Santana and Coster, it is striking to see that the drum section is strongly represented only on Angel of Sunlight, while on the rest of the album there is merely space for Jack DeJohnette’s cymbals on Angel of Air. Bassist David Holland has a very prominent role, and is a driving force for Carlos’ lead guitar work, Jules Broussard’s soprano sax and Alice Coltrane’s harp. The bass intro on Angel of Air is very similar to the one on Eternal Caravan of Reincarnation on the album Caravanserai. When the music swells, it is realized by Jules Broussard’s soprano sax, backed by an 18-piece classical string section that was charted for every track except Angel of Sunlight. Carlos also adds wind chimes, which vanish when the track flows almost unnoticeably into Angel of Water. Alice Coltrane’s composition Bliss: The Eternal Now has the same kind of arrangement as the previous tracks, but here we find only Alice Coltrane, on acoustic piano and harp, and Carlos playing, backed by the orchestra. Carlos plays some fine jazz chops at the beginning of the track, which are reminiscent of his collaborations with John McLaughlin. His playing fits well with the string orchestra and Alice’s trademark harp. Her composition became one of the hallmarks of this historically important album. The fourth track, Angel of Sunlight, is the most distinctive track of the album, both in length and music performed. This 15-minute long track has elements of Indian music, most notably during the first four minutes with Carlos’ Eastern flavored guitar play fitting magnificently with Phil Ford’s tabla. The music then gradually transforms and intensifies, moving from the eastern atmosphere into more conventional jazz territory. Jules Broussard on soprano sax takes over from Carlos and Armando Peraza takes over from tabla and plays an outstanding conga solo for more than 10 minutes, which blends beautifully with Jack DeJohnette’s drumming. In the final third part Carlos comes back to the front after Broussard’s sax solo, which brings back the eastern atmosphere. This is one of the most accomplished Santana compositions up to date. The album ends with the title track Illuminations, a composition similar to the second and third track. Illuminations is, without doubt, Carlos’ most experimental and unorthodox album. At first, the music is difficult to access and understand, which must have left his fans wondering about his current and future direction. It can only be understood within the context of Carlos’ spiritual evolution. The album is an important stage in the musical offerings of that period, an era that eventually came to an end with the release of the band’s album Borboletta in October 1974. Here we may find Santana at their peak, where Carlos’ spiritual growth towards a more independent view and the ecstatic, cohesive mastery of the music played live on Lotus are combined to deliver some of the finest and most refined fusion of Latin, rock, funk, jazz and gospel. Illuminations is an indispensable album, especially for Santana fans, to understand Carlos’ musical development. It may sound uncommon, but make no mistake: it has beautiful moments, and Angel of Sunlight is one of Santana’s best compositions.
