Otis Taylor - Blue-Eyed Monster (1996)

Otis Taylor - Blue-Eyed Monster (1996)
mp3 VBR~184kpbs | 61MB | 47:19 min.
Contemporary Blues, Electric Country Blues, Modern Acoustic Blues

b. 1948, Chicago, Illinois, USA. Denver, Colorado-based blues guitarist and singer-songwriter Taylor has led a chequered musical career, punctuated for long periods by his successful work as an antiques broker. He was born in Chicago but relocated to Denver following the murder of his uncle by a robber. Taylor first developed an interest in folk and blues music as a teenager, learning to play guitar, banjo, and harmonica. By his mid-twenties he had been a member of several blues rock groups, including T&O Shortline (with the legendary Tommy Bolin of Deep Purple) and his own Otis Taylor Blues Band, and played throughout America and Europe.

When a number of projected recordings contracts fell through in the mid-70s, Taylor opted to start a career in antiques. The success of his new line of work meant Taylor was unable to dedicate any time to music, and effectively retired from the entertainment business for nearly 20 years. He was persuaded to begin performing again by musical associate Kenny Passarelli, and in 1995 played his first gig since the mid-70s. His debut recording, Blue-Eyed Monster, was released in 1996. The album's stark lyrical themes and fascination with African-American history and mythology marked Taylor out as a challenging new voice on the northern blues scene. His interpretation of electric country blues grew even darker on subsequent releases When Negroes Walked The Earth (1997) and White African (2001), the latter the first of his albums to gain national distribution and the catalyst for his being named Best New Artist at the W.C. Handy Blues Awards. The lyrics to White African's "Saint Martha Blues" were informed by the real life lynching of Taylor's great-grandfather. Taylor's fascination with social injustice also dominated the follow-up Respect The Dead, with tracks such as "Ten Million Slaves" and "Black Witch" marking him out as one of modern blues most politically charged commentators.

Following the release of Respect The Dead, Taylor signed a new recording contract with Telarc Records and issued 2003's Truth Is Not Fiction, which included a tremendous reading of Big Joe Williams' "Baby, Please Don't Go". His second release for the label, Double V, followed in early 2004. The album featured a number of noticeably more mellow tracks and also introduced Taylor's teenage daughter Cassie on bass and vocals. That year he picked up a prestigious DownBeat award for Truth Is Not Fiction. The 2005 release Below The Fold featured drums for the first time on a Taylor album, and included the memorable father/daughter co-write "Working For The Pullman Company". Taylor continued working with his daughter and also drafted in guest musicians Gary Moore and Charlie Musselwhite on the 2007 follow-up Definition Of A Circle, which included the Hurricane Katrina lament "They Wore Blue" and a track inspired by the plight of European Gypsies, "Black's Mandolin Boogie".

Robert Cray - I Was Warned 1992

Robert Cray - I Was Warned
Wv (+CUE+Log)+Covers | 325 Mb | Mp3 CBR - 320 kbps | 115 Mb
Blues; Blues - Soul

Underestimating Robert Cray is a real danger. He's so good at what he does – singing, writing and especially playing – that his albums have an effortless feel, as if it's easy to turn out soul-baring performances year after year. But his catalog packs a mighty punch, growing richer in time. On his new album, I Was Warned, Cray's out there telling the truth again, as strong as ever.
Working mainly in a Stax/Volt groove, with the Memphis Horns aboard once more, Cray examines broken relationships and seeks definition as a man. He may mourn that he's "Just a Loser," as on the opening track, but that's an atypical observation. Cray is given to taking hard looks at himself with confessional bluntness. But as he chronicles his faults and the endless quest to do the right thing, he comes to understand his strengths as well. In "The Price I Pay," for example, he sounds weary of bearing the burden of unreciprocated love, but the song's lilting arrangement and Cray's own singsong guitar solo hint at something positive coming out of this trial.
That life goes on is an overriding theme of I Was Warned, and nowhere is it better explored than on three consecutive songs near the end of the disc: "A Whole Lotta Pride," "A Picture of a Broken Heart" and the devastating "He Don't Live Here Anymore." Cray's soloing is superb throughout, from the popping, angular lines enlivening "I'm a Good Man" to the complex, multitextured workout on the title track; it's most revealing of the inner man, however, on "He Don't Live Here Anymore." This one's for the ages, an auspicious moment on an album rife with commanding performances.

Carlos Augusto Santana Alves (born July 20, 1947 in Jalisco, Mexico) is a Grammy Award-winning Mexican rock musician and guitarist. He became famous in the late 1960s and early 1970s with his band, Santana, which created a highly successful blend of rock, salsa, and jazz fusion. The band's sound featured his melodic, blues-based guitar lines set against Latin percussion such as timbales and congas. Santana continued to work in these forms over the following decades. He experienced a sudden resurgence of popularity and critical acclaim in the late 1990s. Rolling Stone also named Santana number 15 on their list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time in 2003. Elvin Bishop - Rock My Soul

Elvin Bishop - Rock My Soul (1972)
Blues | MP3 256 Kbps | 71 MB | Covers included
Publisher: Sundazed

When Elvin Bishop left the Butterfield Blues Band in 1968 and moved to California, he added the one ingredient missing from San Francisco's bubbling musical cauldron - nasty, down-home, electrified blues. The Elvin Bishop Group's self-titled debut from 1969, their 1970 sophomore effort Feel It! and their third longplayer, 1972's Rock My Soul, are just what Doctor Feelgood ordered from the guitar whiz who'd cut his teeth jamming with Chicago legends Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf and Little Walter. Includes the bonus track 'Sit And Wonder' (previously unreleased).

Tracklist:
1. Rock My Soul
2. Holler and Shout
3. Let It Shine
4. Don't Mind If I Do
5. Rock Bottom
6. Last Mile
7. Have A Good Time
8. Wings of A Bird

The Robert Cray Band - False Accusations 1985

The Robert Cray Band - False Accusations
FLAC+Cue+Log+Covers | 220 Mb | MP3 CBR 320 kbps | 90 Mb
Blues; Soul

Robert Cray's third album is also his first great one. The production is vastly superior, finally allowing one to hear what a gorgeous tone Cray gets on the guitar. His singing is relaxed and assured, and the songs, originals by Cray and his bandmates, are sensational.
FALSE ACCUSATIONS comes across as a concept album about infidelity and guilt. Everything clicks here, but the best songs are slow burners such as "Porch Light" and "Playin' in the Dirt," where Cray's solos are little marvels of concision and passionate intensity. "I've Slipped Her Mind," a gospel-tinged ballad about being stood up, is an instant classic. Cray turns the number into a virtuoso soul workout that stands with the best of Otis Redding or James Brown.

Muddy Waters - The Muddy Waters Woodstock Album

Muddy Waters - The Muddy Waters Woodstock Album
FLAC (tracks+cue+log+covers) | 287 Mb | RS
Released: 1995 (Recorded: 1975) | Label: Chess / MCA (MCD 9359) | Genre: Blues

Of all the post-Fathers & Sons attempts at updating Muddy's sound in collaboration with younger white musicians, this album worked best because they let Muddy be himself, producing music that compared favorably to his concerts of the period, which were wonderful. His final album for Chess (recorded at Levon Helm's Woodstock studio, not in Chicago), with Helm and fellow Band-member Garth Hudson teaming up with Muddy's touring band, it was a rocking (in the bluesy sense) soulful swansong to the label where he got his start. Muddy covers some songs he knew back when (including Louis Jordan's "Caldonia" and "Let The Good Times Roll"), plays some slide, and generally has a great time on this Grammy-winning album. This record got lost in the shuffle between the collapse of Chess Records and the revival of Muddy's career under the auspices of Johnny Winter, and was forgotten until 1995. The CD contains one previously unreleased number, "Fox Squirrel." - Bruce Eder (AMG)

Tab Benoit - Night Train To Nashville 2008 (Live)

Tab Benoit - Night Train To Nashville
FLAC (Image)+Cue+Log+Covers | 380 Mb | MP3 CBR 320 kbps | 130 Mb
Blues; Rock; Blues-Rock

Night Train To Nashville features guest performances by Jimmy Hall, Jim Lauderdale, Johnny Sansone, Waylon Thibodeaux and Kim Wilson
Following the release of Brother to the Blues in the spring of 2006, the Blues Foundation convened in Memphis on May 10, 2007, for their annual Blues Music Awards ceremony and honored guitarist Tab Benoit with the dual awards of B.B. King Entertainer of the Year and Best Contemporary Male Performer of 2006.
For anyone who saw Benoit play a two-night stand in Nashville at The Place On Second Street just prior to the 2007 Blues Music Awards ceremony, the reasons for the accolades were crystal clear. Backed by Louisiana’s LeRoux and a handful of high-profile guest performers representing a range of roots music styles, Benoit reaffirmed his reputation as a force to be reckoned with on the blues landscape in ways that no trophy ever could.
For the millions of fans unable to witness this electrifying performance first-hand, Night Train To Nashville, Benoit’s sixth solo release on Telarc, is the next best thing. The 11-track live recording, set for April 22, 2008, captures the magic and intensity of Benoit in a live setting, joined by his faithful backup unit and New Orleans mainstay, Louisiana’s LeRoux, and a series of guests representing some of the most talented voices on the current blues, Cajun and country scenes: harpist/vocalist Jimmy Hall (Wet Willie), guitarist/vocalist Jim Lauderdale, harpist/accordionist Johnny Sansone, fiddler/washboard player Waylon Thibodeaux and harpist/vocalist and Fabulous Thunderbirds frontman Kim Wilson.
The Nashville shows were just the beginning of an auspicious summer for Benoit, who performed in The Village at Eric Clapton’s 2007 Crossroads Guitar Festival in Chicago in July, alongside such artists as former Doobie Brother Jeff “Skunk” Baxter and country songwriter-guitarist Jedd Hughes.
“All the guests on this record – Kim Wilson and Jimmy Hall and all the rest – make this a lot different from what I normally do on stage every night,” says Benoit. “These aren’t guys who come to every show I play. They’re all legends, and it’s a real honor to have them come and play at my show. And to hear them sing my songs is a really great experience.”
If you’ve only heard Tab Benoit’s studio recordings, you’ve only heard half the story. This live recording is a living, breathing thing that honors the musical heritage of his native Louisiana and the surrounding regions. Get onboard, shovel on the coals and listen to what happens when thunder and steel move down the tracks and tunnel deep into the roots of some of America’s greatest music. Catch the Night Train To Nashville and get ready for a high-energy ride.

Bukka White - The Sonet Blues Story

Bukka White - The Sonet Blues Story
FLAC (image+cue+log+covers) | 210 Mb | RS
Released: 2005 (Recorded: 1963) | Label: Universal (986 924-6) | Genre: Blues | Ripper: garet jax

Booker White (his name was misspelled on the label for Shake 'Em on Down when it was issued on Vocalion in 1937, and it stuck) turned his vigorous guitar style, heavy voice, and considerable songwriting abilities into 20 classic blues tracks between 1930 and 1940. Then, following a last session for Vocalion in 1940 when he recorded the striking and passionate group of songs on which his reputation rests (including the ultimately revelatory "Aberdeen Mississippi Blues"), White effectively dropped off the public radar. Until 1963, that is, when graduate students and blues fans John Fahey and Ed Denson sent a letter addressed to "Bukka White, Old Blues Singer, c/o General Delivery, Aberdeen, MS," in an effort to locate the man who had recorded a 78 rpm called "Aberdeen Mississippi Blues" some 20 years earlier. Amazingly, the letter actually reached White, who was still alive, although he had since moved from Mississippi to Memphis. The two budding blues scholars rushed to Memphis to meet him, recording the songs found on this collection one afternoon in the singer's room. These historic recordings. released as The Sonet Blues Story, reveal that White's robust guitar playing and his gruff, thundering voice had lost none of their vitality in the intervening years, and the bluesman delivers impassioned versions of some of his key tunes, including "Shake 'Em on Down," and the song that led to his rediscovery, "Aberdeen Mississippi Blues." White even takes a surprisingly nimble turn at the piano for "Drunk Man Blues." These sessions were originally released on Fahey's Takoma label, and although White went on to do other recording dates for small labels, he never sounded quite this intimate and impassioned again. The only minor complaint about this reissue is that the haunting version of "When Can I Change My Clothes" included here is mislabeled as "Parchman Farm Blues." Blues historian Samuel Charters eventually included these recordings in his Legacy of the Blues series, which in turn were released by a small Stockholm jazz and blues label founded in the '50s called Sonet Records. Listeners should start with White's stunning 1940 sides to get a real sense of this powerful musician, but these initial rediscovery tracks are only a notch or two less combustive, and are easily the best of White's later years. - Steve Leggett (AMG)

Eddie Boyd - The Sonet Blues Story

Eddie Boyd - The Sonet Blues Story
FLAC (image+cue+log+covers) | 308 Mb | RS
Released: 2005 ( Recorded: 1974) | Label: Universal (986 925-6) | Genre: Blues | Ripper: garet jax

Like several of the black jazz and blues players of his generation, pianist Eddie Boyd, tired of the racism in America and the general treatment afforded musicians, moved permanently to Europe in the mid-'60s, where labels like Sweden's Sonet Records were more than happy to record him. The session presented here took place in Stockholm in 1974, and features Boyd on piano and vocals performing original blues numbers backed by young Swedish players (and one American, Ed Thigpen, on drums), and while things don't have the powerful edge of a classic Chicago Chess Records session, it's close, and there is a charmingly loose and fluid feel working here, one that is perfect for the kind of easy, almost elegant blues that was Boyd's stock in trade. Things get off to a great start with the opener, "Lovesick Soul," and pretty much stay at the level through the set, with the impressive "Tell the Truth," the bubbling "Dedicated to My Baby" (an alternate version is added as a bonus track), and the refreshingly arranged "Zip Code" (which allows Boyd to cut loose on piano a little bit) being among the clear highlights. At his best, Boyd delivered a kind of light, airy, and transcendent version of the blues, one that featured as much hope as misery, and this set is a perfect example of his unique approach. - Steve Leggett (AMG)

This interesting release re-creates the look and contents of the 1964 Kent Records LP called Original Folk Blues of John Lee Hooker right down to the original sleeve art, and ups the ante by including a previously unreleased version of "Let Your Daddy Ride" as well as six other additional bonus tracks. Most of these cuts were recorded with Bernie Besman in Detroit in fascinatingly primitive fashion between 1948 and 1954, and were then shipped to the Bihari Brothers' Modern Records imprint for release as singles. Included here are Hooker's first versions of "Boogie Chillen'," "Crawlin' King Snake," and "Sally Mae," each of which is classic Hooker, as rough and raw as a Delta wind blowing shards of glass up the Detroit River. There are some odd experiments, too, like the spooky "Cold Chills," which features an absolutely huge-sounding organ played by Buddy Johnson and some eerie, multi-tracked vocals from Hooker, with the whole recording sounding like it was tracked in a massive cavern deep in the earth with a bank of thick fog rolling over everything. These Modern releases have appeared time and time again on various Hooker collections, but there is the feel of something special about this particular package. It's all ragged and delightfully unhinged, which is the only way to go with John Lee Hooker. ~ Steve Leggett, All Music Guide

Bob Dylan - Beyond Here Lies Nothin’ (promo first track from his new CD)

Bob Dylan - Beyond Here Lies Nothin’ (promo track from his new CD)
MP3 | 256Kbps | 7 Mb | RS | 2009
Blues, rock

The first track from Bob Dylan’s forthcoming release, "Together Through Life", has been posted as a free download on BobDylan.com. Titled “Beyond Here Lies Nothin’”, the song was available for free from midnight, March 30th through midnight, March 31st. Together Through Life will be released on Columbia Records on April 28th.

A blues-soaked love song that boasts a zydeco-flavor with its cajun shuffle rhythm, makes use of Dylan's newfound infatuation with the accordion (which is played by Los Lobos' accordionist David Hidalgo). Enjoy it while looking forward the complete release!

beyond here lies nothin’

well I love you pretty baby
you’re the only love I've ever known
just as long as you stay with me
the whole world is my throne
beyond here lies nothin’
nothin’ I could call my own

well I'm moving after midnight
by boulevards of broken cars
don’t known what I’d do without her
without this love that we call ours
beyond here lies nothin’
nothin’ beyond the moon & stars

down in the street there’s window
and every window made of glass
we keep on loving pretty baby
for as long as love would last
beyond here lies nothin’
but the mountains of the past

well my ship is in the harbor
and the sails are spent
listen to me, pretty baby
lay your hand upon my head
beyond here lies nothin’
nothin’ done and nothin’ said

SHM-CD Japan Papersleeve; UICY-93410
EAC rip with CUE + Log | FLAC (single file) | Full HQ Scans
~ 400 mb incl. recovery | Released 1968 | Genre: Blues

Allmusic.com rating: 4.5 out of 5 Stars

Blues from Laurel Canyon been Mayall's first album after the breakup of his band the Bluesbreakers on 14 July 1968. It was also his last album with Decca before moving to Polydor.
John Mayall sings and plays harmonica, organ and guitar on the album. Other musicians include a young Mick Taylor (guitar), Colin Allen (drums) and Stephen Thompson (bass). The guitarist Peter Green featured on the track First Time Alone.

Review by Ben Davies

Mayall's first post-Bluesbreakers album saw the man returning to his roots after the jazz/blues fusion that was Bare Wires. Blues from Laurel Canyon is a blues album, through and through. Testimony to this is the fact that there's a guitar solo only 50 seconds into the opening track. Indeed, Mayall dispersed the entire brass section for Blues from Laurel Canyon, and instead chose the solid but relatively limited backing of Mick Taylor (guitar), Colin Allen (drums), and Stephen Thompson (bass). Instantly, it is apparent that John Mayall hasn't lost his touch with the blues. "Vacation," the album's opener, reminds one exactly why this artist is so celebrated for his songwriting ability. The staggering Mick Taylor (here still in his teens) truly proves his worth as a blues guitarist, while Steve Thompson (also in his late teens) works superbly with one of the genre's most interesting drummers, Colin Allen. Blues from Laurel Canyon is as unerring as Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton, and equally as musically interesting. Not only is this one of the finest John Mayall albums, it is also a highlight in the blues genus.
