Red Hot Chili Peppers - What Hits!? (1992)

Red Hot Chili Peppers - What Hits!? (1992)

AMG review by Steve Huey:
After the Red Hot Chili Peppers left EMI for Warner Bros. and hit the big time with "Under the Bridge," their former label gathered most of the best tracks from the group's first four albums for the compilation What Hits!? Since Blood Sugar Sex Magik, the Peppers' most popular album, was recorded for Warner, none of its songs are present — with the exception of "Under the Bridge," which was somehow licensed for use. What Hits!? does a pretty good job of sifting through the Peppers' uneven discography and picking out the best moments, making it a very useful sampler; it also contains "Show Me Your Soul," the band's contribution to the Pretty Woman soundtrack.

Simple Minds - Once Upon A Time (1985)

Simple Minds - Once Upon A Time (1985)
FLAC Individuals | Modern Rock - Alternative Rock - New Wave | EAC Rip (No LOG or CUE Files) | 258 MB | RS Links

Okay, so a few years later they blew it (largely due to Mick McNeil leaving the band and depriving them of the musical alchemy shared between himself and Mr.Burchill) but at this time in their career, Simple Minds had reached their peak. I disagree with anyone who slags this album off for being too "big" or "pompous". Yes it was, but so were Queen and so can U2 be, but isn't that why people love them??? I'm not taking anything away from the earlier albums "Life In Day", etc , "Sons and Fascination" had some great ideas and, arguable "New Gold Dream" is more subtle and mysterious and "Sparkle..."more… a some cracking tunes, but "Once Upon A Time" had greater ambitions and wanted to take this one step further. Jimmy Iovine was an excellent choice of producer, and let's not forget, this was the mid 80s and it was the right choice of record for this time. As for the tunes. I would defend the beautiful symphonic melodies of the title track, "All The Things She Said" for its uplifting middle coda, "Alive and Kickings" fantastic singalong moments, "Sanctify Yourself" for it's sheer power, "Wish You Were Here's" old style Mind's subtlety and "Come Along Way" for it's sheer haunting playout (Mr.Gaynor's drums never sounded so good!).

Track Listing:
1. "Once Upon a Time" – 5:44
2. "All the Things She Said" – 4:16
3. "Ghost Dancing" – 4:46
4. "Alive and Kicking" – 5:25
5. "Oh Jungleland" – 5:12
6. "I Wish You Were Here" – 4:42

The The - Soul Mining

The The - Soul Mining [1990]
MP3 | 192 kbps | 46 min | 70 MB
Indie Rock, Alternative

"Soul Mining" is perhaps Johnson's most accessible work and as outstanding musically as it is angry, "Soul Mining" is a landmark 80's album.

Track list:

1. I've Been Waiting For Tommorow (All Of My Life)
2. This Is The Day
3. The Sinking Feeling
4. Uncertain Smile
5. The Twilght Hour
6. Soul Mining
7. Gaint
8. Perfect

Part pop, part post-punk, part poet for the disillusioned under the Thatcher regime, Matt Johnson's The The were an uncompromising collective who defied simple pigeonholing. 'Soul Mining' is perhaps Johnson's most accessible work, helped in no small part by the commercial appeal of verse-chorus songs like 'Perfect', 'This Is The Day' (aided by both accordion and flute) and 'Uncertain Smile' which - featuring a glorious piano coda - contains Jools Holland's most valuable contribution to a piece of music. Otherwise the remainder of the album ripples with menace and tension; as Johnson broods and snarls his way through diatribes of self-doubt ("How can anyone know me, when I don't even know myself") and thinly-veiled attacks on the powers that be ("I'm just a symptom of the moral decay that's gnawing at the heart of the country"). As outstanding musically as it is angry, 'Soul Mining' is a landmark 80's album.

Smashing Pumpkins - Machina: The Machines of God (2000)

Smashing Pumpkins - Machina: The Machines of God (2000)
Genre: Alt Rock | MP3 192 Kps | Stereo | 100 Mb

Before Zeitgeist (2007), there was Machina (2000). Re-upload of a classic: Thanks to original poster.

Re-upload of a classic: Thanks to original poster.

On Smashing Pumpkins' fifth studio album, prodigal drummer Jimmy Chamberlain was brought back into the fold as bassist D'Arcy left and was replaced by Hole's Melissa Auf der Maur. Just as the band underwent personnel changes, so did its music. Head Pumpkin Billy Corgan retreated from the scaled-down ambiance of ADORE, instead choosing to reunite with MELLON COLLIE co-producer Flood in a move that merged the band's early '90s crunch with the sterile sheen of late-'90s industrial rock.

Topically, Corgan incorporates plenty of religious and perils-of-fame imagery. He declares himself as a rock messiah within the swirling miasma of "Heavy Metal Machine" and seeks to find redemption in an unrequited relationship on the keening dirge "Crying Tree of Mercury." Although songs such as "The Everlasting Gaze" and "The Imploding Voice" grind along with NIN-like efficiency, Corgan still provides plenty of pleasantly melodic moments. "Try, Try, Try," "The Sacred and Profane," and "Wound" find the nasally frontman putting together ethereal sounding pop songs propelled by gentle rhythms and dreamy electronic nuances.

MACHINA: THE MACHINES OF GOD was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Recording Package.

Smashing Pumpkins: Billy Corgan (vocals, guitar); James Iha (guitar); Melissa Auf Der Maur (bass); Jimmy Chamberlain (drums).

Powderfinger - Odyssey Number Five (2000)

Odyssey Number Five is the fourth studio album by Australian rock band Powderfinger. Produced by Nick DiDia and released on September 4, 2000, the album produced four singles. The most successful, ?My Happiness?, reached #4 on the ARIA Singles Chart, won the 2001 ARIA Music Award for ?Single of the Year?, and topped Triple J?s Hottest 100 in 2000. The album also featured ?These Days?, which topped Triple J?s Hottest 100 in 1999, making Powderfinger the first band since Joy Division to twice achieve top ranking in the countdown.

Many critics lauded the album as Powderfinger?s best work; one stated that the album was ?the Finger?s Crowning Glory?, however, others were critical of the ?imitation? contained in the album. Overall, the album won five ARIA Music Awards in 2001 and was certified platinum seven times. ~~ Wikipedia

The Church - Starfish

The Church - Starfish

?Signing to Arista might have seemed an unusual move to start with, getting produced by L.A. studio types like Waddy Wachtel even more so. But for the Church the rewards were great ? if sometimes too clean around the corners in comparison to the song-for-song masterpiece Heyday, Starfish set up the band?s well-deserved breakthrough in the States. The reason was ?Under the Milky Way,? still one of the most haunting and elegant songs ever to make the Top 40. As Kilbey details a lyric of emotional distance and atmosphere, the band executes a quietly beautiful ? and as is so often the case with the Church, astonishingly well-arranged ? song, with mock bagpipes swirling through the mix for extra effect. That wasn?t the only strong point on an album with more than a few; the lead-off track ?Destination? was as strong an album opener as ?Myrrh,? if slower paced and much more mysterious, piano blending through the song?s steady pace. The rest of the first side has its share of highlights, such as the quietly threatening edge of ?Blood Money? and the confident, restrained charge of ?North, South, East and West.? Willson-Piper gets to lead off the second side with ?Spark,? a vicious, tight rocker that captures some of the best ?60s rock edge and gives it a smart update. Equally strong is Kilbey?s ?Reptile,? with an appropriately snaky guitar line and rhythm punch offset against weirdly soothing keyboards. Koppes has an okay vocal to his credit on ?A New Season,? but the stronger tracks are Kilbey?s other contributions, the strong guitar waltz of ?Antenna? (with great guest mandolin from David Lindley) and the closing charge (and very Church-like title) of ?Hotel Womb.? Performances throughout are at the least fine and at the most fantastic.? ?
