Vanessa Mae - Discography (1995-2004)

Vanessa Mae - Discography (1995-2004) - 12 CD
MP3 320kbps, 44100KHZ, STEREO | Classic-Rock | 1995 - 2004 | 12 CD + Cover | 1,63 Gb

Vanessa-Mae Vanakorn Nicholson (born October 27, 1978), known professionally as Vanessa-Mae (in Chinese, Chen Mei), is an internationally known British pop and classical musician, especially noted for her violin skills. Her music style is self-described as "violin techno-acoustic fusion," as several of her albums prominently feature the techno style.

Childhood
Vanessa-Mae was born in Singapore to a Thai father (Varaprong Vanakorn) and a Chinese mother (Pamela Tan). After her parents separated, her mother married Englishman Graham Nicholson, and the family moved to England when Vanessa-Mae was four years old. She grew up in London and is a British citizen.

Vanessa-Mae, born October 27, 1978, coincidentally shares her birthday with famed violinist Niccolo Paganini, who was born 196 years earlier on October 27, 1782.

Professional life
Vanessa-Mae began playing piano at the age of three and violin at five.

She was particularly famous in the United Kingdom throughout her childhood making regular appearances on television (for example on Blue Peter) mostly involving classical music and conservative style. According to Guinness World Records, she is the youngest soloist to record both the Beethoven and Tchaikovsky violin concertos, a feat she accomplished at the age of thirteen. During this time she attended the Francis Holland School in central London.

Vanessa-Mae made her international professional debut at the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival in Germany in 1988, and also during 1988 made her concerto debut on stage with the Philharmonia Orchestra in London.

On entering adolescence Vanessa-Mae broke away from her traditional classical influences and became known for her flashy, sexual style appearing in music videos in stylish outfits. She appeared on the Janet Jackson album The Velvet Rope playing a violin solo on the song "Velvet Rope." Her first pop-style album, The Violin Player, was released in 1995.

In April 2006, Vanessa-Mae was ranked as the wealthiest young entertainer under 30 in the UK in the Sunday Times Rich List 2006.[2] having an estimated fortune of about 32 million ($64 million) stemming from concerts and record sales of over an estimated 10 million copies world wide, which is an unprecedented achievement for a young female violinist.

Vanessa-Mae announced in 2006 that she would be releasing a new album sometime between 2007 and 2008. The album was said to draw inspiration from great ballets and opera themes. Her new album is now scheduled to be released in 2009.

Her violins
Vanessa-Mae most often uses one of two types of violins, a Guadagnini acoustic violin or a Zeta Jazz model electric violin. The Guadagnini was made in 1761, and was purchased by her parents at an auction for 150,000. It was stolen in January, 1995, but was recovered by the police two months later. She once fell and broke it, but it was repaired.

In addition, she uses one of two Zeta Jazz Model electric violins, one of which is white and the other one of which features decals of the U.S. flag. She has also been using a silver-gray Zeta Jazz Model electric violin since 2001. In addition to these two main violins, she sometimes buys violins and resells them later, giving the proceeds to charity. Occasional media appearances show her to be using a clear acrylic electric violin made by Ted Brewer.

Curtis Fuller & Hampton Hawes With French Horns [1957](2000)

Original Release Date: May 18, 1957 - Audio CD (December 26, 2000) - Label: Ojc - ASIN: B0000542R8
Jazz

Note: Recorded in Hackensack, New jersey, 18th May 1957.
Review: One would be hard pressed to find an instrument less suited to jazz than the French horn. Firmly rooted in classical music and played sitting down, the French horn seems almost to resist being pulled from the orchestra pit. Of course, this didn't stop people from using it. The wide experimentation of the forties and fifties brought several new instruments to the jazz spectrum; as a result, the French horn gained a few advocates along the way. Mostly, though, this was in larger group settings; very few souls were daring enough to suggest that it could be used in a smaller context. Fuller and Hawes were not only willing to try, but to make the focus of the session.
If nothing else, Fuller and Hawes achieve the distinction of leading the only small group to ever feature two French horns in the front line. Just from this fact alone, you can expect to hear something a little different. The three brass instruments are similar enough that they blend quite nicely and, in some cases, are almost indistinguishable from one another. Shihab's alto provides a necessary balance to what would otherwise be a somewhat murky front line; his brittle lines add variety while cutting through the chocolate tones of the other three.
As far as the songs themselves go, Fuller is up to his usual bop trickery and Hawes pounds away skillfully as well. The French horn, however, is not well suited to this type of music and lacks the force to pull off a solo without sounding a little feeble next to the other two. Two French horn solos also gets a bit repetitive. Better is the somber choreography of "A-Drift" and "Five Spot" which sounds a bit like early Mingus; here the horns add rich colorings without having to navigate the changes.
Like any album that wears its eccentricities on its sleeve, this one is not without its flaws but is certainly unique and enjoyable when it works. Both Fuller and Hawes's body of work are well served by this reissue.

Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here (1975) [CBS/Sony Japan 35DP-4]
Rare 2 track 1982 Remaster
EAC rip | .FLAC +.CUE + .LOG + artwork | 234 Mb | 44:28 min | RS
Progressive / Classic Rock

It's scarcely conceivable that Pink Floyd or this album would need any introduction, so I won't bore you with one; however even die hard fans may not have heard of this remaster. This is the rare 2-track Japanese 1982 CD of "Wish You Were Here," catalog number 35DP-4. It's generally regarded as being the best sound version of this classic album rivaling the Columbia Mastersound remaster. The 35DP-4 is very "clean" sounding...playback is very smooth, and it is a "comfortable" listening experience. You can crank it pretty loudly and still enjoy it, which is not done so easily with the Mastersound release. Some may argue the point however, as mastering is often a personal preference.

Because the CDs being produced at this time often had treble pre-emphasis put onto them, which can affect computer playback, I have included a de-emphasized rip as well. If you don't know what pre-emphasis is or only intend to burn to a Cd, you don't need to download them.

Miles Davis - "Bags' Groove" (JVC XRCD 2004 Supermaster)

Miles Davis and the Jazz Giants "Bags' Groove" (JVC XRCD)
Jazz | 1954/2004 (JVC) | Ape | EAC Log + Cue | HQ Full Covers |236mb

There are a multitude of reasons why Bags' Groove remains a cornerstone of the post-bop genre. Of course there will always be the lure of the urban myth surrounding the Christmas Eve 1954 session -- featuring Thelonious Monk -- which is documented on the two takes of the title track. There are obviously more tangible elements, such as Davis' practically telepathic runs with Sonny Rollins (tenor sax). Or Horace Silver's (piano) uncanny ability to provide a stream of chord progressions that supply a second inconspicuous lead without ever overpowering. Indeed, Davis' choice of former Dizzy Gillespie Orchestra and concurrent Modern Jazz Quartet members Milt Jackson (vibes), Kenny Clarke (drums), and Percy Heath (bass) is obviously well-informed. This combo became synonymous with the ability to tastefully improvise and provide bluesy bop lines in varied settings. The up-tempo and Latin-infused syncopation featured during the opening of "Airegin" flows into lines and minor-chord phrasings that would reappear several years later throughout Davis' Sketches of Spain epic. The fun and slightly maniacally toned "Oleo" features one of Heath's most impressive displays on Bags' Groove. His staccato accompaniment exhibits the effortless nature with which these jazz giants are able to incorporate round after round of solos onto the larger unit. Bags' Groove belongs as a cornerstone of all jazz collections. Likewise, the neophyte as well as the seasoned jazz enthusiast will find much to discover and rediscover throughout the disc. The superbly remastered XRCD release includes both historic takes of "Bags' Groove" as well as one additional rendering of the pop standard "But Not for Me."

Thanks to JVC's XRCD technology, this 1954 remastering as fresh as if was recorded made yesterday!

Project Harmonia Mundi - Part 32

Bach: H-Moll-Messe [HMC901813.14] Konrad Junghändel, Cantus Cölln
Classical | EAC APE+CUE+LOG | 2CD/443MB | Covers+Booklet | RS.com

This is the fourth recording of the Mass in B minor to utilize the one-voice-per-part (OVPP) theory, and again, it pays of beautifully. While Rifkin, Parrot, and Kuijken have all recorded the Mass in such a configuration, Junghanel's rendition seems to be the winner here. I noted that however fast the Sanctus, Dona nobis, and Gratias agimus tibi are executed, it is not a detriment to the sound. I believe what makes recording this large scale work with small scale forces is that the balance between each line is sounded perfectly. The recording reminds me of Herreweghe's... reverberant, ecclesiastical sound, suitable to the music. Each soloist functions perfectly as both a soloist and a chorister. I belive that the singers and players of Cantus Colln have the uniformity of voice unmatched by any other ensemble that has attempted to play Bach's concerted church music in such a configuration. The Mass in B-Minor under Rifkin's baton was the first to be recorded using OVPP. Nearly a 20 year old theory, Junghanel's set seems to be a revelation. It is nearly flawless. While I would appreciate the more "standard" tempos of some numbers, it is no less a relevatory pleasure to listen to.

Part1 - Part2 - Part3 - Part4 - Part5

Bruckner: F-moll-Messe [HMC901976] Herreweghe, RIAS-Kammerchor, Orchestre Des Champs-Élysées
Classical | EAC APE+CUE+LOG | 1CD/249MB | Covers+Booklet | RS.com

The Mass in F minor marks a turning point in the life of Bruckner, then aged 44: crowning his long years of apprenticeship, it announces the series of masterpieces he went on to compose during his years in Vienna. The work illustrates the transition between a certain religious academicism and the Wagnerian heritage, while also reflecting a profoundly fragmented personality, to whom Philippe Herreweghe has already devoted three critically acclaimed recordings.

Part1 - Part2 - Part3

Debussy - Poulenc: Sonatas pour Violincelle et Piano [HMC902012] Queyras, Tharaud
Classical | EAC APE+CUE+LOG | 1CD/259MB | Covers+Booklet | RS.com

Debussy and Poulenc made a lasting impact on the musical identity of their country through both their references to the past and their innovations. This programme illustrates their vision of a certain esprit français: moving constantly between irony and emotion, extremely refined, yet at the same time offering an amplified echo of ‘light’ music – in short, the ‘exquisite bad music’ the creator of Les Mamelles de Tirésias prided himself on writing. The trajectory of these two interpreters of the young generation in France, who have already made several recordings together, has led them naturally to this repertoire.

Part1 - Part2 - Part3

Ginastera: Estancia [HMC901808] Magdalena Barrera, Josep Pons, Orchestra Ciudad de Granada
Classical | EAC APE+CUE-LOG | 1CD/226MB | Covers+Booklet | RS.com

This is a great CD. Why? Because these are probably the Argentinian composer Alberto Ginastera's four most accessible pieces, the sound is clear and cool, and Pons and his smallish orchestra play with finesse. This is, in my opinion, the best harp concerto written in the last hundred years, and the Variaciones concertantes Op. 23 is a masterpiece. You can certainly find bigger, splashier versions of the Estancia ballet suite: if that's your main interest, look for Gisele Ben-Dor's LSO version of the complete ballet (with the complete Panambi) on a hard to find Conifer CD. And Howard Hanson's old Rochester recording of the Creole Faust Overture is much more earthy. Nevertheless, Pons lays it all out beautifully before us, and avoids the slow tempi that characterize some of his other performances (the Bizet Symphony, for instance). Make no mistake, this is music to be savoured.

Part1 - Part2 - Part3

Neusidler: Lute music [HMU907388] Paul O'Dette
Classical | EAC APE+CUE+LOG | 1CD/297MB | Covers+Booklet | RS.com

The son of a lute maker and prominent teacher, Melchior Neusidler was lucky enough to gain the favour of the Fuggers, a rich family of Augsburg bankers: soon his skills as a performer and their passion for his art enabled him to make his living from music – despite his difficult character, which discouraged many patrons! Paul O’Dette breathes new life into the music of this now forgotten master, which at one time was to be heard all over Europe.

Part1 - Part2 - Part3 - Part4

Pärt: A Tribute [HMU907407] Paul Hillier, Theatre of Voices, The Pro Arte Singers, Estonian Philharmonic Chamber
Classical | EAC APE+CUE+LOG | 1CD/249MB | Covers + Booklet | RS.com

In celebration of composer Arvo Pärt’s 70th birthday (September 11th, 2005), a selection of recordings conducted by his longtime collaborator and biographer Paul Hillier, including a newly recorded piece, "Dopo la vittoria".

Part1 - Part2 - Part3

Pärt: Da Pacem [HMU907401] Christopher Bowers-Broadbent, Paul Hillier & Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir
Classical | EAC APE+CUE+LOG | 1CD/213MB | Covers+Booklet | RS.com

Nine sacred pieces by Arvo Pärt including of his newest compositions, alongside works from earlier in his career. Pärt's longtime collaborator and biographer Paul Hillier leads the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir and organist Christopher Browers-Broadbent in a third recording devoted to the Estonian composer.

Part1 - Part2 - Part3

Pärt: I Am The True Vine [HMU907242] Hargis, Bowers-Broadbent, Pro Arte Singers, Hillier, The Theatre of Voices
Classical | EAC APE+CUE+LOG | 1CD/209MB | Covers+Booklet | RS.com

"This recording is the fruit of many years' enjoyable collaboration between composer, conductor, and organist, beginning with performances of the St. John Passion back in the mid-1980s and continuing right down to the present day." (PAUL HILLIER)

Sammartini: Sonate per Flauto e Basso Continuo [HMC905266] Maurice Steger
Classical | EAC APE+CUE+LOG | 1CD/395MB | Covers | RS.com

His brother, Giovanni Battista, was one of the fathers of the modern symphony; like him and like their father Alexis de Saint-Martin, Giuseppe Sammartini was a virtuoso oboist. But he chose to make his career at the court of the Prince of Wales, in London. Surrounded by a group of exceptional musicians, Maurice Steger gives us a chance to discover seven of his sonatas for recorder and continuo which, though composed in England, clearly proclaim their Italian origins! A treat for the ears, and a dazzling display of virtuosity.

Part1 - Part2 - Part3 - Part4 - Part5

O Felice morire [HMC901999] Joel Frederiksen, Ensemble Phoenix Munich
Classical | EAC APE+CUE+LOG | 1CD/291MB | Covers + Booklet | RS.com

Caccini was one of the principal creators of the stile recitativo which, at the very end of the Renaissance, led to a meteoric ascent in popularity of the solo voice. The decoration of the arias in his Nuove Musiche is never gratuitous, but always at the service of the passions of the soul, the affetti. The whole art of this style consists in maintaining a sort of expressive nonchalance or sprezzatura, characterised by elegance and lightness. With his meticulous interpretative approach and remarkable deep bass voice, Joel Frederiksen breathes new life into the theatricality of the nascent Baroque.

Part1 - Part2 - Part3 - Part4

Zaguán [HME987027] Miguel Poveda
Classical | EAC APE+CUE+LOG | 1CD/277MB | Covers+Booklet | RS.com

Miguel's voice has me under its spell (Me tiene embrujada). His powerful voice evokes a mixture of deep masculinity, raw lyricism and heady sensuality that is mesmerizing. It reaches into the primitive and mystical areas of your soul and doesn't let go. How does he get his voice to do that?! The accompanists are outstanding, (guitar) on this CD, (piano) on the other (Suena Flamenco). Try listening to this CD in the dark with headphones on... a rich albeit humbling experience. Buy anything you can get your hands on by these guys. Your life will never be the same.

The Doors - Live In Boston 1970 (2007)
Rock | EAC-APE+logfile+art | 1.2 GB | MP3@320kps+art | 499 MB
Bright Midnight/Rhino Records

Recorded during the Absolutely Live Tour, this three-disc set, spread over two shows in Boston, reveals The Doors at the band's (or, I should say, Jim Morrison's) excessive best. Drunk, Morrison sometimes flounders, but the band holds it together and usually brings him back on course.

Usually, when I convert one of these to MP3, I use the standard track breaks. But with this one, it doesn't really work. One song flows into another, and in the case of the Light My Fire Medley on disc three, Rhino splits it into six parts! So, there are only three MP3 files here, one for each disc. The artwork is included in both lossless and lossy downloads.

Joseph Williams - This Fall (2008)

Joseph Williams - This Fall (2008)
AOR Rock | MP3 192 CBR | 52:17 | 72.3MB

Joseph Williams was the lead singer for the band Toto and along with his solo releases and contributions on movie soundtracks is regarding as having one of the most talented voices in the world of AOR Westcoast rock. This is Joseph's fourth proper solo release of all new material and he really shines on this one, yes there are still a couple of ballads on this one but for the most part it rocks much harder than his previous efforts. Anyone who is a fan Toto, westcoast AOR or great vocals will really enjoy this one.

Lady Dottie & the Diamonds - Lady Dottie & the Diamonds

Lady Dottie & the Diamonds - Lady Dottie & the Diamonds
Blues | hi speed soul, 2008 | Mp3 320k | 98 MB | 12 Songs, 43 Min.

Product Description
A staple in San Diego for more than a decade, featuring some of the most talented musicians around, Lady Dottie and the Diamonds are the region's premier blues act. It's a boogie-woogie dance party that goes all night. Band leader, Lady Dottie, is a soulful woman in her early 60's named Dorothy Mae Whitsett. Singing everywhere from the kitchen to the pulpit, she was raised in a family of 14 and performed in a Gospel Choir. An Alabama-bred fireball, Dottie's curvier than Lombard and got more gumption than a pack of wolves. She's a tambourine toting, hip-gyrating powerhouse with a sultry voice that will leave you trembling.

CoDoNa - Live in Hamburg 1978
FM broadcast | Source: preFM(Master) > CD-R > EAC> flac 6 > mp3 256 kbps | ~195 MB
Genre: Jazz, Fusion, World Fusion

I didn't really think there was a need to introduce Codona. Just in case, I looked up the wikipedia and they had this to say:
Codona was a free jazz and world fusion group which released three self-titled albums for Polygram Records/ECM Records in 1978, 1980 and 1982. The trio consisted of Don Cherry, Collin Walcott, and Nana Vasconcelos.

The name of the group is derived from the first two letters of each of the member's first names.

My guess is that most of the people who read this post could add a lot more about Codona than these two short paragraphs suggest.

Beethoven: Symphonies Nos. 1-9 - Bernard Haitink - London Symphony Orchestra (6CD Box Set) [Hybrid SACD]

Beethoven: Symphonies Nos. 1-9 - Bernard Haitink - London Symphony Orchestra (6CD Box Set) [Hybrid SACD]
Classical | LSO | HQ Full Album Scan (300dpi) + Booklet | XLD (LOG + CUE + Test Run + AccurateRip) | FLAC Image | 1.68 GBs | Rapidshare

"Haitink's integral set of Beethoven Symphonies with the London Symphony has none of the stodginess that sometimes afflicted his earlier recordings with the Concertgebouw. His restudy of the works, and the presence of concert audiences translate into faster tempos, sharper accents, wider dynamic range and an overall sense of energy that imbue these nine masterpieces. Here, the Classic style is wed to Romantic expressivity but not to Romantic excess, Competition is abundant, ranging from Toscanini, Furtwängler, and the 1963 von Karajan to recent sets from the sometimes hyperkinetic Vanska, the more traditional Abbado, and the insightful Barenboim. But this new Haitink set, available in hybrid SACD/CD, is a solid contender.
The early First and Second symphonies benefit from Haitink's leaner, more vivacious approach. The Eroica also sounds fresher. Its slow movement is still a funeral march, but moves a hair faster this time, just enough to be the difference between a pace that drags and a pace that flows and retains interest. In the outer movements, there’s a new spring to the rhythms and clarity in orchestral balances, and this Eroica has the cumulative intensity to make its full effect. Haitink's Fourth is in a grander mold than we usually hear. While never overblown, it has some of the wider scope and heroism of the odd-numbered symphonies. Like the Eroica, it is rhythmically vigorous and the prominent tympani and brass make an impact that sweeps the listener along. The Fifth can suffer from over-exposure but here it has a variety of tonal colors, tempos, and dynamics that make it seem newly minted while no less grand. The propulsive finale, with its pounding tympani and expertly played journey to transcendence, is especially memorable.

The Sixth, the Pastorale, has that same feeling, its flowing tempos and skillful interpretive choices make this one of the best Sixths since Böhm's, with plenty of excitement in the Storm and warmth in the final movement. The Seventh gets a buoyant reading, predominately lyrical without neglecting its powerful rhythms. The driven final movement is exhilarating without being hectic. The Eighth is often considered the slightest of the Nine but Haitink’s brisk tempos make it dance and swagger; the lyrical sections played with engaging warmth. As for the Ninth, it is miles ahead of Haitink's earlier versions. The harmonic mist that opens the work is well delineated, the contrasts within movements carefully marked, the Scherzo bursting with energy, the incomparable Adagio sings at a more fluid tempo, the choral final movement as good as any in the catalogue, its structure crystal clear under Haitink's baton. The major filler in the set is the often scorned Triple Concerto, which gets a performance of warm lyricism that can only elevate its status.

The playing of the London Symphony is phenomenal, especially since these are live recordings. The violins’ tone glows with radiance, their precise articulation helps make the rhythms energetic, the winds are uniformly excellent, the brass sleekly powerful, the potent percussion authoritative in climaxes. If a criticism can be made it would be that bass lines are sometimes weaker than desirable, perhaps a function of engineering that varies in clarity from disc to disc but is never less than good. In sum, a major addition to the Beethoven Symphony discography. --Dan Davis"

AMG review by Steve Huey:
After the Red Hot Chili Peppers left EMI for Warner Bros. and hit the big time with "Under the Bridge," their former label gathered most of the best tracks from the group's first four albums for the compilation What Hits!? Since Blood Sugar Sex Magik, the Peppers' most popular album, was recorded for Warner, none of its songs are present — with the exception of "Under the Bridge," which was somehow licensed for use. What Hits!? does a pretty good job of sifting through the Peppers' uneven discography and picking out the best moments, making it a very useful sampler; it also contains "Show Me Your Soul," the band's contribution to the Pretty Woman soundtrack.
