Michael Lee Firkins - Michael Lee Firkins 1990

Michael Lee Firkins - Michael Lee Firkins
APE+Cue+Log+Covers | 260 Mb | MP3 CBR 320 kbps | 100 Mb
Rock; Blues-Rock

There were literally dozens of young Steve Vai and Joe Satriani-influenced rock guitarists dreaming of launching big-time instrumental rock careers on shredder specialty labels like Shrapnel during the late '80s and early '90s. Michael Lee Firkins was one of the best artists (if not the best) among these mostly forgotten noodlers. Refusing to play the goofy-outfit-wearing self-marketer, Firkins let his music speak for itself, and as his label's fortunes dwindled with the subsiding popularity of this very specialized genre, that voice was muffled by obscurity. To date, Firkins seems to have notmore… been allowed the resources to record a disc with a production level equal to this debut, and while decent, none of his subsequent instrumental albums captures the same urgency and clarity. Firkins proves himself capable of keeping up with the 64th-note crowd, but his songwriting, tone, and amazing feel for rhythm separate this musician from the gaggle of equipment-endorsing, pink-and-green-guitar-playing instrumental competitors. Rarely can shredders pull off five minutes of blues soloing as intriguing and consistent as Firkins does on "Deja Blues," much less write a brilliant chorus to wrap around all the screaming leads. The elegant guitar tones and arrangements combined with sticky-sweet melodies and a completely original approach to rock soloing make standouts like "Space Crickets" and "Laughing Stacks" instrumental classics. Central to Firkins' guitar voice is his generous use of country-sounding double stops and a unique picking technique that gives his guitar a cool horn-like quality. Mimicking horns, especially saxophones, is something that many guitarists aspire to do, but only the absolute best (Allan Holdsworth, for instance) can even approximate wind instrument tone, legato, and sustain. Ever the innovator, Firkins actually captures more of a country-metal-clarinet effect during choice lead spots like the springy B section of "Laughing Stacks." Despite his amazing ability, Firkins never took the studio cat or sideman route to second-hand prominence and financial security, the virtuoso preferring instead to woodshed and further tweak his guitar abilities. The resulting excursions are fine efforts, but this debut still stands out as the musician's best collection.

UFO - UFO2 Flying One Hour Space Rock Remastered 1971-1999

UFO - UFO2 Flying One Hour Space Rock Remastered 1971-1999
FLAC+CUE+ART | 385 MB RS | 3% Recovery

By far the best of the original lineup... "space-rock" at it's best; what they were testing on UFO 1, was simply purified in this release. Combining both relatively shorter pieces with long and diverse opus'- probably the most important of all UFO albums.

Both UFO 1 and its follow-up, Flying, were very successful in Japan (especially the single "C'mon Everybody" which became a huge hit there) and Germany (the song "Boogie For George", also from the first album, reached #30 in German singles charts and "Prince Kajuku" from UFO 2 - Flying reached #26 there), but generated poor interest in Britain and America. Consequently, their third effort, Live (later re-issued as UFO Lands In Tokyo), was originally only released in Japan in 1972.

Gerry Rafferty - City To City (1978) {1995 DCC GZS-1075}

Gerry Rafferty - City To City (1978) {1995 DCC GZS-1075}
Flac+cue+log | 360 MB | Covers

Like a lot of the reviewers, I first heard this album when it came out and of course, the magical, mythic megahit, "Baker Street," was what prompted me to buy the album.

After opening with "The Ark," followed by "Baker Street" and "Right Down the Line," the rest of the song lineup -- which has the tunes placed in perfect sequence, by the way -- is great all the way through.

Everyone who loves the album has their own memories and mine began with the anthemic sax intro of "Baker Street" as I drove through southern Idaho on my way to Colorado on a blistering hot day in 1978. The Idaho AM radio stations must've played that song every hour as I drove along I-80N as it was known then.

The lyrics resonated with me then and still do to this day. I always like to play it when I'm driving on remote, lonely roads in the West -- I always get that old vibe time after time. In fact, I never get tired of hearing "Baker Street," or the rest of the tunes on the album -- which is a pretty rare thing, considering that I've listened to consistently for 26 years!

Why Gerry Rafferty didn't become a superstar is kind of a mystery to me, but this album will always stand out as one of the very best rock albums recorded. A desert island disc for sure.

Five stars plus.

Amazon.com

Even in his mother's womb, Gerry Rafferty must have expected the worst. This Scotsman entitled his melancholy 1971 solo album Can I Have My Money Back? (the answer was "No!"). And when Stealers Wheel, the group he subsequently formed with Joe Egan, became an overnight success with the hit single "Stuck in the Middle with You," only to lapse into morning-after obscurity, he probably said, "I told you so." On City to City, his first LP in three years, Rafferty sticks grimly to his guns. Not only does he use the same producer (Hugh Murphy) and several of the same musicians, but a similar un-self-pitying fatalism pervades the record.

However, there is a slight but significant change for the better that makes City to City as eloquently consoling as the spirituals Rafferty echoes in "Whatever's Written in Your Heart." Indeed, there's a prayerful quality to the entire LP, a quality reminiscent of the dim dawn after a dark night of the soul. "The Ark" begins as a Highland death march, complete with doleful bagpipes, but swells into a stirring hymn to love. And, after etching a relationship stalemated by the inability of two lovers to express their feelings, the somber "Whatever's Written in Your Heart" (whose only instruments are a piano and a hushed synthesizer) concludes with a coda of vocal harmonies that sing of sublime forgiveness. Hope, in almost all these songs, lurks on the horizon. And when it springs fully into view -- as on "City to City," with its rollicking train tempo, and on the jaunty "Mattie's Rag" -- the music almost burbles with anticipation.

Gerry Rafferty still writes with the sweet melodiousness of Paul McCartney and sings with John Lennon's weary huskiness, and his synthesis of American country music, British folk and transatlantic rock is as smooth as ever. But his orchestrations have acquired a stately sweep. For all their rhythmic variety -- from the suave Latin lilt of "Right down the Line" to the thump of "Home and Dry" -- these are uniformly majestic songs. The instrumental refrain on one of the best of them, "Baker Street," is breathtaking: between verses describing a dreamer's self-deceptions, Rapheal Ravenscroft's saxophone balloons with aspirations only to have a synthesizer wrench it back to earth with an almost sickening tug. If City to City doesn't rise to the top of the charts, its commercial failure will be equally dismaying. And our loss will be greater even than Rafferty's. After all, when was the last time you bought an album boasting more than fifty minutes of music? And great music at that.

Stoney LaRue - The Red Dirt Album (2005)

Stoney LaRue "The Red Dirt Album"
MP3 | CBR 320 Kbps 44100 Stereo | 90.46Mb
2005 | Genre: Red Dirt | Country Rock | Songwriter

Oklahoma singer-songwriter Stoney LaRue should be no stranger to roots music fans who follow the ascending "Red Dirt" music scene based in Oklahoma. His debut release, "The Red Dirt Album," spelled out his allegiance once and for all to the Plains-centric genre launched by Bob Childers.

But while LaRue has spent most of his life north of the Red River, he enjoys one tie to the Coastal Bend: He was born in Taft. "I was 5 years old when we moved to Southeast Oklahoma,"LaRue started turning heads as leader of the Organic Boogie Band, an Oklahoma circuit ensemble based in Tulsa. The band, which formed in 2001, released "Downtown," a debut album recorded in Cain's Ballroom in Tulsa and mixed in a trailer on the side of a cliff in Bartlesville.

LaRue struck out on his own soon after and released "The Red Dirt Album" independently in August 2005. The disc contained songs that LaRue co-wrote with famed songwriter Ray Wylie Hubbard and "Red Dirt" regular Cody Canada as well as covers of songs by Bob Dylan and Oklahoma's Red Dirt Rangers. One year later, LaRue recorded a live album for the "Live at Billy Bob's" CD series, which is named after the famous honky tonk in the Fort Worth stockyards.

Backed by drummer Jeremy Bryant, bassist Jesse Fritz, guitarist Kevin Webb, fiddle player Jeremy Watkins and keyboardist Steve Littleton, LaRue fills his schedules with scores of performances at clubs and festivals that have taken him as far as the Caribbean and Europe. The band has opened for a range of headliners including Lee Ann Womack, Cross Canadian Ragweed and Willie Nelson.

UFO - Strangers In The Night Live 1979

UFO - Strangers In The Night Live 1979
FLAC+CUE+Art | 435 MB RS | Original Recording

I remember the fanfare in the rock press that greeted this album's release. For once, the hacks of the time recognised that the record on review was something very special. Live, UFO were (still are) peerless. Even though it was recorded as long ago as 1978, the sound, energy, and sizzle of UFO on stage shines through. It hasn't aged at all. Every track is a winner and it could have been recorded yesterday such is the quality. The album catches UFO at their very best with Michael Schenker simply on fire. Catch the two furious breaks on "Lights Out", the sumptious solo on "Love To Love", the spine tingling way he just creates over the top of Paul Raymond's boogie rhythm on "This Kids" and the long and quite magical solo on "Rock Bottom." Only Thin Lizzy's "Live and Dangerous" comes close to matching this. It is rock's finest hour. Every metal fan should own it.

Leonard Cohen - Songs From A Room (1969)

Leonard Cohen - Songs From A Room (1969)
Genre: Folk | APE + Cue | 217 MB | 41,55 min.| Covers
Label: Columbia Records / Rip: Monkey's Audio / 12 Tracks

Songs from a Room is the Canadian poet Leonard Cohen's second album. It reached #63 on the Billboard list and #2 at UK charts. Cohen reportedly said he chose producer Bob Johnston to achieve the spartan sound he considered appropriate for his songs, after the disputes he had with John Simon during the mixing sessions of Songs of Leonard Cohen. The album also features some prominent (if strictly ornamental) Jew's harp. The album's sound is thus closer to the archetype (or stereotype) of an "early" Leonard Cohen record. Wikipedia

SHM-CD Edition / A&M Records

Nestled between the accomplished Crime of the Century album and 1977's Even in the Quietest Moments, Crisis? What Crisis? may not have given the band any chart success, but it did help them capture a fan base that had no concern for Supertramp's commercial sound. With Rick Davies showing off his talent on the keyboards, and Roger Hodgson's vocals soaring on almost every track, they managed to win back their earlier progressive audience while gaining new fans at the same time. Crisis received extensive air play on FM stations, especially in Britain, and the album made it into the Top 20 there and fell just outside the Top 40 in the U.S. "Ain't Nobody But Me," "Easy Does It," and the beautiful "Sister Moonshine" highlight Supertramp's buoyant and brisk instrumental and vocal alliance, while John Helliwell's saxophone gives the album even greater width. The songwriting is sharp, attentive, and passionate, and the lyrics showcase Supertramp's ease at invoking emotion into their music, which would be taken to even greater heights in albums to come. Even simple tracks like "Lady" and "Just a Normal Day" blend in nicely with the album's warm personality and charmingly subtle mood. Although the tracks aren't overly contagious or hook laden, there's still a work-in-process type of appeal spread through the cuts, which do grow on you over time.

Terje Rypdal: If Mountains Could Sing

Terje Rypdal: If Mountains Could Sing
Jazz | Time 47:55 | MP3 320k | Size 121 Mb
Released 1995 | Label ECM 1554 | Covers

For twenty years electric guitarist Terje Rypdal (and ECM producer Manfred Eicher) have helped define the most sensual, moody, alluring aspects of European jazz and new music. Andwhile Rypdal, the improvising guitarist, may structure his solos and chamber-like accompaniments in the manner of a jazz or classical composer, there's a lyric, rock edge to his guitar playing that will transport anyone who has ever contemplated the vocal cry of a Fender Stratocaster driven into distortion.
But then Rypdal brings many styles of music to bear on his modern conception. From his earliest days with Jan Garbarek in George Russell's Sextet, Rypdal displayed a feel for the modal interplay of Russell and Miles Davis, and the tortured lyrical cry of Clapton and Hendrix. With the Nordic psychedelia of WHAT COMES AFTER and the chamber graces of strings and guitar on WHENEVER I SEEM TO BE FAR AWAY, Rypdal forged the template of his art.
There is much of the midnight sun and northern lights on IF MOUNTAINS COULD SING,yet it begins with one of Rypdal's sunniest, most rhythmic designs. Imagine The Police or Santana (sans vocals) during one of their extended instrumental jams and you've got "The Return Of Per Ulv", with its gypsy airs built around Rypdal's soaring line. "It's In The Air", with its double-timed drums and its swirling, wintery drone, sets off Rypdal's edgy distortion lead in sharp relief, before giving way to Webern-like strings on "But On The Other Hand". Rypdal, like King Crimson, views 20th Century classicism and rock as mutually compatible, and there is much to enjoy in his music, from thecoven's shuffle of "Private Eye" to the whimsical folk dance of "Dancing Without

This is a wonderful recording which showcases the talents of all four musicians. Andersen's bass work is (as ever) superb, and Frisell's playing is very representative for this time period (early 80s) with fluid, melodic solos linked with Hendrix influenced distortion. John Taylor deserves special mention for his lyrical solos which remind me of Keith Jarret, Lyle Mays, and Bill Evans. A very rewarding recording with fine bonus tracks on this reissue!

UFO - UFO (UFO 1) 1971-1999

UFO - UFO (UFO 1) 1971-1999
flac+cue+art | 251 MB RS | Remastered

For diehard UFO fans, this is the begining of the band, and the start of a hard rock story that endures to this day. This album is a product of the times in which it was created, the echoes of the sixties were fading, and the violence and upheaval of the seventies were on the horizon, and UFO was there to create some sounds that were different than the peace and love era, and a preview of things to come. With the first incarnation of this band, they delivered some solid tunes, "Timothy" is a great tribute to the orginal guru of the acid days, "Boogie" is a solid rockin tune as well, all the songs are cool, and this is a must have album for the collector, and a good intro to the band before they became the icons of the area shows of the seventies during the Michael era. Give it a listen, and turn on, tune in, and drop out back to a time when the winds of change were a coming.

Taking their name from a London club, UFO got off the ground and into orbit in 1969, when drummer Andy Parker joined Hocus Pocus, a band that featured the erstwhile juvenile talents of vocalist Phil Mogg, bassist Pete Way and guitarist Mick Bolton. With a musical style that verged on Space Metal, fusing progressive experimental hard rock with good time boogie, UFO released three albums, 'UFO', "UFO2/Flying' and 'UFO Live' on the Beacon label, all achieving success in the German and Japanese markets.

Pioneers of Italian jazz-rock from the 1970's, PERIGEO were often compared to early BRAND X & actually as innovative as WEATHER REPORT, with a very full sound,
featuring bass, keyboards, drums, guitar and saxes. Their music was only comprised between jazz-rock and straight jazz with a dynamic mix of spacey sounds, no prog influences
whatsoever. No need to precise that each instrumentalist is strongly competent in their respective domains!

Their best works are usually considered "Genealogia" and "La Valle Dei Templi". The band split after their fifth album and reunited some years later for the ambitious
"Alice" double album. From the LP "Alice", the band became more commercial.

Oscar Peterson - The Trio (1973)
MP3 @ 320kbps / RS.com: 91mb / Cover / Genre: Jazz / mainstream

Guitarist Joe Pass and bassist Niels-Henning ?rsted Pedersen both play well on these live performances, but the reason to acquire this set is for the remarkable Oscar Peterson. The pianist brilliantly investigates several jazz styles on "Blues Etude" (including stride and boogie-woogie), plays exciting versions of his "Chicago Blues" and "Easy Listening Blues," tears into "Secret Love," and shows honest emotion on "Come Sunday." Peterson really flourished during his years with Norman Granz's Pablo label, and this was one of his finest recordings of the period. - Allmusic.com

MP3 @ 256kbps / RS.com: 285mb / Genre: Jazz / mainstream, bop

The group that Oscar Peterson led between 1953-58 with guitarist Herb Ellis and bassist Ray Brown was one of the great piano trios of all time. It was never so much a matter of Peterson having two other musicians accompany him as it was that they could meet the pianist as near-equals and consistently inspire him. And unlike most trios, Peterson's had many arranged sections that constantly needed rehearsals and were often quite dazzling. This live double-CD from 1955 has previously unreleased (and unknown) performances of 31 songs (28 standards plus three of Peterson's originals) that were released for the first time in 1994. The pianist is often in typically miraculous form, Ellis (whether playing harmonies, offering short solos or getting his guitar to sound like a conga by tapping it percussively) proves to be a perfect partner, and Brown's subtle but sometimes telepathic contributions should not be overlooked either. - Allmusic.com

Oscar Peterson & Michel Legrand "Trail of Dreams. A Canadian Suite" (2000)

Instrumental, Orchestral Jazz | APE.img+cue&Log | Covers | 285 MB | 52:27 min
(+ MP3 | 320CBR | 44100 | Stereo | 127 MB )

"Trail of Dreams: A Canadian Suite" is hardly a typical Oscar Peterson album. This time, the Canadian pianist doesn't play any standards and doesn't take a bop-oriented approach; in fact, "Trail of Dreams" isn't a straight-ahead jazz album but rather combines jazz with elements of pop, classical, and symphonic music. Recorded in April 2000, this CD finds Peterson joining forces with Michel Legrand, who conducts a lush 24-piece string orchestra.

"Oscar Peterson & Michel Legrand "Trail of Dreams. A Canadian Suite" (2000)

Album Reviews:

Telarc is pleased to announce the release of Oscar Peterson’s "Trail of Dreams: A Canadian Suite". Commissioned by MusicCanadaMusique 2000, the legendary jazz pianist created Trail of Dreams: A Canadian Suite as an ode to the places and people of Canada. Inspired by the 16,000-kilometer, coast-to-coast recreation trail, Trail of Dreams: A Canadian Suite is comprised of twelve compositions: "Open Spaces," "Morning in Newfoundland," "The Okanagan Valley," "Dancetron," "Ballad to P.E.I.," "Cookin’ on the Trail," "Banff the Beautiful," "Lonesome Prairie," "The French Fiddler," "Harcourt Nights," "Manitoba Minuet" and "Anthem to a New Land." Explains Peterson, "I feel that the music speaks to the picturesque and photographic scenic quality of various places in Canada that the Trans Canada Trail passes through". On this latest recording, composer and pianist are on equal terms as Montreal-born Peterson leads his quartet (Swedish guitarist Ulf Wakenius, Danish bassist Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen and British drummer Martin Drew) with a 24-piece string orchestra under the direction of Michel Legrand, the illustrious French composer, conductor, orchestrator and pianist. Legrand’s memorable film tracks include "The Windmills of Your Mind" (from The Thomas Crown Affair), "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg" and "The Summer Knows" (the theme from Summer of ‘42). He has won three Oscars and two Grammy awards, and has collaborated with stars such as Frank Sinatra, Sarah Vaughan, Aretha Franklin and Barbra Streisand. Best known for his brilliant playing, Peterson is equally accomplished as a composer. His lengthy list of compositional credits include 1964’s Canadiana, a suite that traced the escape route used by blacks during the slavery era. This time, he has teamed up with Legrand to expand the vistas to include more elaborate musical structures.

Norman Granz brought Oscar Peterson to New York City in 1949 for the first Jazz at the Philharmonic (JATP) tour. Peterson went on to lead two of the most popular jazz trios in the world, one with bassist Ray Brown and guitarist Herb Ellis, the other with Brown and drummer Ed Thigpen. Today, Peterson has more than 200 recordings to his credit, along with seven Grammies, the Glenn Gould Prize in 1993, and, in June of 1999, he received the prestigious Japanese Praemium Imperiale Award. At age 75, despite having suffered a stroke, he continues to dazzle listeners around the world.

A beautiful collection of old, new, and unexpected lullabies performed by an all-star roster of Smooth Jazz Award winners including Dave Koz, David Benoit and Peter White. Inspired by the birth of his sleep-challenged niece, jazz saxophonist and radio personality Dave Koz launches a new record label with "Golden Slumbers: A Father's Lullaby" , a charming collection of light jazz songs designed to lull little ones and perhaps some not-so-little ones into dreamland. This is a real sleeper of an album, literally.

"Dave Koz & VA "Golden Slumbers.A Father's Lullaby" (2002)
Barnes & Noble' Editorial Reviews:

Inspired by the birth of his sleep-challenged niece, jazz saxophonist and radio personality Dave Koz launches a new record label with "Golden Slumbers: A Father's Lullaby" , a charming collection of light jazz songs designed to lull little ones and perhaps some not-so-little ones into dreamland. The selections include some well-known lullabies, such as "Hush Little Baby," featuring Bruce Watson on keyboards, guitar, and percussion, and "Brahms' Lullaby," which weaves Brian Culbertson's keyboard playing with Hyman Katz's flute lines. Also included are relaxing renditions of timeless classics, such as Rick Braun's flugelhorn-and-keyboard rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," and the dreamy "When You Wish Upon a Star," which teams pianist David Benoit with Koz and his brother Jeff on keyboards and guitar. And what's an album called Golden Slumbers without a Beatles song or two in this case the Kozes' sweet renditions of the title song and "Blackbird." The brothers team up with guitarist Norman Brown and vocalist Tim Davis on a tranquil version of James Taylor's "You Can Close Your Eyes," while flutist Steve Kujala, guitarist Grant Geissman, and keyboardist Brad Cole perform a lovingly lilting version of Phil Collins's "You'll Be in My Heart." Fleshing out the disc are a few original songs, including Peter White's sweet "Charlotte's Song" and the Koz brothers' "Lullaby for Isabelle." Most of the songs here are dedicated to and inspired by the performers' children (some of whom make brief vocal appearances), making this dreamy collection both a calming sleep inducer and a unique celebration of the special bond between fathers and their children.

Henri Dutilleux, Pascal Dusapin - String Quartets

Henri Dutilleux, Pascal Dusapin - String Quartets
Covers, Booklets, Scans | APE EAC LOG CUE | 350 MB | 1CD | RS, MU

"Dutilleux's quartet has to be one of the finest post-war works in the genre. In seven movements (plus interludes) that play without a break, this seventeen minute work conjures up a bewildering variety of nocturnal moods, colours and atmospheres. Yet it is always strongly coherent, the writing unified by the composer's tendency to treat the four instruments of the string quartet as if they were one super-stringed instrument. The performance on this disc is absolutely stunning--the precision of the Arditti Quartet is matched by an imagination and colouristic range that's second to none."

Miles Davis - Get Up With It (2cd)

Miles Davis - Get Up With It [1974]
APE & MP3 + CUE + LOG | TT 124:05 | Full artwork @ 300dpi
APE = 765 mb | MP3 (lame --preset standard) = 178 mb
Jazz / Fusion / Jazz-Rock / Jazz-Funk

This may be the most "commercial" sounding of all of Miles' electric records from the '70s, but it still sounds out there, alien, and futuristic in all the best ways, and Get Up with It is perhaps just coming into its own here in the 21st century.

Without a doubt, one of the greatest albums of them all, a double set only comparable to the likes of the Stooges' "Funhouse" in its darkness, intensity and raw, funky sexuality. Now for starters let's get something straight: I loathe "fusion", and to even CONSIDER putting Miles' music of the '70s in that category - a genre filled with lilly-livered chumps like Return To Forever and the Yellow Jackets - is a great disservice to Miles and his music. From 1969 to '75, Mr. Davis pioneered and created his own unique sounds, a mixture of hard funk, psychedelic rock, avant-garde electronics and free jazz, that has never been equalled in regards to its sonics or its "vibe". There is NOTHING that can touch the raised-middle-finger jab in the guts felt when one puts on discs like "Dark Magus", "Live Evil", "Agharta", "Big Fun" or "On The Corner". The feelings of utter loathing and despair, the overwhelming EMOTION of these discs can be too much, yet nothing can prepare you for 1974's "Get Up With It", a disc of such wildness and total lack of any commercial forethought (and thank the heavens for that) that it was granted pretty much instant deletion upon release and has mainly only been available from Japan for the last 25 years. Start with the cover: a big, slightly unflattering, grainy photo of The Man. It's the sight of a man against the world, battling for his own identity. Hit the first track, "He Loved Him Madly" (a tribute to Duke Ellington), a 32-minute ambient piece only broken up occasionally by Peter Cosey's mumbling guitar lines. It's one of the saddest damn songs you'll ever hear, and you can bet yer booty that if it was made by a bunch of white guys in Berlin ca. '71, every Krautrock freak in town would be hailing it as a classic. Next track "Maiysha" is a schizophrenic one. For ten minutes in merely putters along like a lite Latin number, interrupted sporadically by Miles' Sun Ra-like organ, then it stops, gets into a hard groove and proceeds to move along to Peter Cosey's awesome guitar screeches for another five minutes. Hot. "Honky Tonk" is up next, a brief interlude of stop-start rhythms and noisy organ crunch. It prepares you for the next track the unstoppable "Rated X", THE peak of Miles' - or maybe anyone's - sonic capabilities. Part hyperdive breakbeat rhthyms, part uber-funk, and nine parts pure noise, there is no other sound on earth as MOVING as this song. Get up with it. Disc two starts with "Calypso Frelimo", another 32-minute piece that starts where "Rated X" finishes off. Ecstatic peaks of dark psychedelic jamming, aided by Miles' wah-wah'd trumpet, gel and compete. "Red China Blues" is a brief number that kicks it in a Chess-Records-meets-Ornette way, and the 15-minute+ "Mtume" once again takes you for a ride with its collision of Cosey's guitar (a highly under-rated player in a field with the likes of Sonny Sharrock) and about half a dozen percussionists. Finishing is "Billy Preston", more chilling mid-range avant-funk to close the set. "Get Up With It" is the perfect summation of what was filling Miles' head at the time: the avant electronics of Stockhausen, the cyclical funk of James Brown, the wailing psych guitar of Hendrix, the improvised freeness of Ornette Coleman and as The Man himself put it, "a deep African thing". Many words have been written on Miles' music of this period, but to really GET it, you have to LISTEN to it. Not a word is spoken on GUWI, yet it speaks volumes on its creator's alienation and sense of despair. As far as so-called "out-rock" goes, this is about as "out" as you could get, and certainly about as purely "psychedelic" as music has ever gotten, so do the done thing and get with it. Amazon's Best of 1998
Opting for simplicity this time around, B.B. King gets by with a little help from his excellent backing band, producing an album that's evocative of the Louisiana countryside where it was recorded. After over half a century in the business, King knows what he's about: he makes playing good blues sound easy, and every track on Blues on the Bayou is a treat. ~ Genevieve Williams

Amazon essential recording
There's an undeniable pleasure in listening to a veteran bluesman do his stuff. For Blues on the Bayou, which he also produced, B.B. King presents a stripped-down, simply-arranged recording that's as tight as a coiled spring and smooth as a freshly-polished dance floor. From the first track, "Blues Boys Tune," a slow instrumental dripping with organ riffs, this CD is chock-full of the sort of guitar work that a master like King makes sound effortless. Whether it's the mid-tempo playfulness of "Bad Case of Love," or the slow "Blues Man" with its sparkling-clean guitar work, or the wistfulness of "Darlin' What Happened," or the sheer sweetness of "If I Lost You," Blues on the Bayou proves why King is considered the reigning master of blues guitar. Even the violins sound right and proper here, and King's sidemen turn in some impressive work as well; there are in particular some great piano solos on this disc. On the whole, Blues on the Bayou is a slow-burning treat. ~ Genevieve Williams

Entertainment Weekly
Making his producing debut, King summons a slow-rising, down-home aroma, like bacon and grits in the morning.
