Michael Lee Firkins - Michael Lee Firkins 1990

Michael Lee Firkins - Michael Lee Firkins
APE+Cue+Log+Covers | 260 Mb | MP3 CBR 320 kbps | 100 Mb
Rock; Blues-Rock

There were literally dozens of young Steve Vai and Joe Satriani-influenced rock guitarists dreaming of launching big-time instrumental rock careers on shredder specialty labels like Shrapnel during the late '80s and early '90s. Michael Lee Firkins was one of the best artists (if not the best) among these mostly forgotten noodlers. Refusing to play the goofy-outfit-wearing self-marketer, Firkins let his music speak for itself, and as his label's fortunes dwindled with the subsiding popularity of this very specialized genre, that voice was muffled by obscurity. To date, Firkins seems to have notmore… been allowed the resources to record a disc with a production level equal to this debut, and while decent, none of his subsequent instrumental albums captures the same urgency and clarity. Firkins proves himself capable of keeping up with the 64th-note crowd, but his songwriting, tone, and amazing feel for rhythm separate this musician from the gaggle of equipment-endorsing, pink-and-green-guitar-playing instrumental competitors. Rarely can shredders pull off five minutes of blues soloing as intriguing and consistent as Firkins does on "Deja Blues," much less write a brilliant chorus to wrap around all the screaming leads. The elegant guitar tones and arrangements combined with sticky-sweet melodies and a completely original approach to rock soloing make standouts like "Space Crickets" and "Laughing Stacks" instrumental classics. Central to Firkins' guitar voice is his generous use of country-sounding double stops and a unique picking technique that gives his guitar a cool horn-like quality. Mimicking horns, especially saxophones, is something that many guitarists aspire to do, but only the absolute best (Allan Holdsworth, for instance) can even approximate wind instrument tone, legato, and sustain. Ever the innovator, Firkins actually captures more of a country-metal-clarinet effect during choice lead spots like the springy B section of "Laughing Stacks." Despite his amazing ability, Firkins never took the studio cat or sideman route to second-hand prominence and financial security, the virtuoso preferring instead to woodshed and further tweak his guitar abilities. The resulting excursions are fine efforts, but this debut still stands out as the musician's best collection.

UFO - UFO2 Flying One Hour Space Rock Remastered 1971-1999

UFO - UFO2 Flying One Hour Space Rock Remastered 1971-1999
FLAC+CUE+ART | 385 MB RS | 3% Recovery

By far the best of the original lineup... "space-rock" at it's best; what they were testing on UFO 1, was simply purified in this release. Combining both relatively shorter pieces with long and diverse opus'- probably the most important of all UFO albums.

Both UFO 1 and its follow-up, Flying, were very successful in Japan (especially the single "C'mon Everybody" which became a huge hit there) and Germany (the song "Boogie For George", also from the first album, reached #30 in German singles charts and "Prince Kajuku" from UFO 2 - Flying reached #26 there), but generated poor interest in Britain and America. Consequently, their third effort, Live (later re-issued as UFO Lands In Tokyo), was originally only released in Japan in 1972.

Gerry Rafferty - City To City (1978) {1995 DCC GZS-1075}

Gerry Rafferty - City To City (1978) {1995 DCC GZS-1075}
Flac+cue+log | 360 MB | Covers

Like a lot of the reviewers, I first heard this album when it came out and of course, the magical, mythic megahit, "Baker Street," was what prompted me to buy the album.

After opening with "The Ark," followed by "Baker Street" and "Right Down the Line," the rest of the song lineup -- which has the tunes placed in perfect sequence, by the way -- is great all the way through.

Everyone who loves the album has their own memories and mine began with the anthemic sax intro of "Baker Street" as I drove through southern Idaho on my way to Colorado on a blistering hot day in 1978. The Idaho AM radio stations must've played that song every hour as I drove along I-80N as it was known then.

The lyrics resonated with me then and still do to this day. I always like to play it when I'm driving on remote, lonely roads in the West -- I always get that old vibe time after time. In fact, I never get tired of hearing "Baker Street," or the rest of the tunes on the album -- which is a pretty rare thing, considering that I've listened to consistently for 26 years!

Why Gerry Rafferty didn't become a superstar is kind of a mystery to me, but this album will always stand out as one of the very best rock albums recorded. A desert island disc for sure.

Five stars plus.

Amazon.com

Even in his mother's womb, Gerry Rafferty must have expected the worst. This Scotsman entitled his melancholy 1971 solo album Can I Have My Money Back? (the answer was "No!"). And when Stealers Wheel, the group he subsequently formed with Joe Egan, became an overnight success with the hit single "Stuck in the Middle with You," only to lapse into morning-after obscurity, he probably said, "I told you so." On City to City, his first LP in three years, Rafferty sticks grimly to his guns. Not only does he use the same producer (Hugh Murphy) and several of the same musicians, but a similar un-self-pitying fatalism pervades the record.

However, there is a slight but significant change for the better that makes City to City as eloquently consoling as the spirituals Rafferty echoes in "Whatever's Written in Your Heart." Indeed, there's a prayerful quality to the entire LP, a quality reminiscent of the dim dawn after a dark night of the soul. "The Ark" begins as a Highland death march, complete with doleful bagpipes, but swells into a stirring hymn to love. And, after etching a relationship stalemated by the inability of two lovers to express their feelings, the somber "Whatever's Written in Your Heart" (whose only instruments are a piano and a hushed synthesizer) concludes with a coda of vocal harmonies that sing of sublime forgiveness. Hope, in almost all these songs, lurks on the horizon. And when it springs fully into view -- as on "City to City," with its rollicking train tempo, and on the jaunty "Mattie's Rag" -- the music almost burbles with anticipation.

Gerry Rafferty still writes with the sweet melodiousness of Paul McCartney and sings with John Lennon's weary huskiness, and his synthesis of American country music, British folk and transatlantic rock is as smooth as ever. But his orchestrations have acquired a stately sweep. For all their rhythmic variety -- from the suave Latin lilt of "Right down the Line" to the thump of "Home and Dry" -- these are uniformly majestic songs. The instrumental refrain on one of the best of them, "Baker Street," is breathtaking: between verses describing a dreamer's self-deceptions, Rapheal Ravenscroft's saxophone balloons with aspirations only to have a synthesizer wrench it back to earth with an almost sickening tug. If City to City doesn't rise to the top of the charts, its commercial failure will be equally dismaying. And our loss will be greater even than Rafferty's. After all, when was the last time you bought an album boasting more than fifty minutes of music? And great music at that.

Stoney LaRue - The Red Dirt Album (2005)

Stoney LaRue "The Red Dirt Album"
MP3 | CBR 320 Kbps 44100 Stereo | 90.46Mb
2005 | Genre: Red Dirt | Country Rock | Songwriter

Oklahoma singer-songwriter Stoney LaRue should be no stranger to roots music fans who follow the ascending "Red Dirt" music scene based in Oklahoma. His debut release, "The Red Dirt Album," spelled out his allegiance once and for all to the Plains-centric genre launched by Bob Childers.

But while LaRue has spent most of his life north of the Red River, he enjoys one tie to the Coastal Bend: He was born in Taft. "I was 5 years old when we moved to Southeast Oklahoma,"LaRue started turning heads as leader of the Organic Boogie Band, an Oklahoma circuit ensemble based in Tulsa. The band, which formed in 2001, released "Downtown," a debut album recorded in Cain's Ballroom in Tulsa and mixed in a trailer on the side of a cliff in Bartlesville.

LaRue struck out on his own soon after and released "The Red Dirt Album" independently in August 2005. The disc contained songs that LaRue co-wrote with famed songwriter Ray Wylie Hubbard and "Red Dirt" regular Cody Canada as well as covers of songs by Bob Dylan and Oklahoma's Red Dirt Rangers. One year later, LaRue recorded a live album for the "Live at Billy Bob's" CD series, which is named after the famous honky tonk in the Fort Worth stockyards.

Backed by drummer Jeremy Bryant, bassist Jesse Fritz, guitarist Kevin Webb, fiddle player Jeremy Watkins and keyboardist Steve Littleton, LaRue fills his schedules with scores of performances at clubs and festivals that have taken him as far as the Caribbean and Europe. The band has opened for a range of headliners including Lee Ann Womack, Cross Canadian Ragweed and Willie Nelson.

UFO - Strangers In The Night Live 1979

UFO - Strangers In The Night Live 1979
FLAC+CUE+Art | 435 MB RS | Original Recording

I remember the fanfare in the rock press that greeted this album's release. For once, the hacks of the time recognised that the record on review was something very special. Live, UFO were (still are) peerless. Even though it was recorded as long ago as 1978, the sound, energy, and sizzle of UFO on stage shines through. It hasn't aged at all. Every track is a winner and it could have been recorded yesterday such is the quality. The album catches UFO at their very best with Michael Schenker simply on fire. Catch the two furious breaks on "Lights Out", the sumptious solo on "Love To Love", the spine tingling way he just creates over the top of Paul Raymond's boogie rhythm on "This Kids" and the long and quite magical solo on "Rock Bottom." Only Thin Lizzy's "Live and Dangerous" comes close to matching this. It is rock's finest hour. Every metal fan should own it.

Leonard Cohen - Songs From A Room (1969)

Leonard Cohen - Songs From A Room (1969)
Genre: Folk | APE + Cue | 217 MB | 41,55 min.| Covers
Label: Columbia Records / Rip: Monkey's Audio / 12 Tracks

Songs from a Room is the Canadian poet Leonard Cohen's second album. It reached #63 on the Billboard list and #2 at UK charts. Cohen reportedly said he chose producer Bob Johnston to achieve the spartan sound he considered appropriate for his songs, after the disputes he had with John Simon during the mixing sessions of Songs of Leonard Cohen. The album also features some prominent (if strictly ornamental) Jew's harp. The album's sound is thus closer to the archetype (or stereotype) of an "early" Leonard Cohen record. Wikipedia

SHM-CD Edition / A&M Records

Nestled between the accomplished Crime of the Century album and 1977's Even in the Quietest Moments, Crisis? What Crisis? may not have given the band any chart success, but it did help them capture a fan base that had no concern for Supertramp's commercial sound. With Rick Davies showing off his talent on the keyboards, and Roger Hodgson's vocals soaring on almost every track, they managed to win back their earlier progressive audience while gaining new fans at the same time. Crisis received extensive air play on FM stations, especially in Britain, and the album made it into the Top 20 there and fell just outside the Top 40 in the U.S. "Ain't Nobody But Me," "Easy Does It," and the beautiful "Sister Moonshine" highlight Supertramp's buoyant and brisk instrumental and vocal alliance, while John Helliwell's saxophone gives the album even greater width. The songwriting is sharp, attentive, and passionate, and the lyrics showcase Supertramp's ease at invoking emotion into their music, which would be taken to even greater heights in albums to come. Even simple tracks like "Lady" and "Just a Normal Day" blend in nicely with the album's warm personality and charmingly subtle mood. Although the tracks aren't overly contagious or hook laden, there's still a work-in-process type of appeal spread through the cuts, which do grow on you over time.

Terje Rypdal: If Mountains Could Sing

Terje Rypdal: If Mountains Could Sing
Jazz | Time 47:55 | MP3 320k | Size 121 Mb
Released 1995 | Label ECM 1554 | Covers

For twenty years electric guitarist Terje Rypdal (and ECM producer Manfred Eicher) have helped define the most sensual, moody, alluring aspects of European jazz and new music. Andwhile Rypdal, the improvising guitarist, may structure his solos and chamber-like accompaniments in the manner of a jazz or classical composer, there's a lyric, rock edge to his guitar playing that will transport anyone who has ever contemplated the vocal cry of a Fender Stratocaster driven into distortion.
But then Rypdal brings many styles of music to bear on his modern conception. From his earliest days with Jan Garbarek in George Russell's Sextet, Rypdal displayed a feel for the modal interplay of Russell and Miles Davis, and the tortured lyrical cry of Clapton and Hendrix. With the Nordic psychedelia of WHAT COMES AFTER and the chamber graces of strings and guitar on WHENEVER I SEEM TO BE FAR AWAY, Rypdal forged the template of his art.
There is much of the midnight sun and northern lights on IF MOUNTAINS COULD SING,yet it begins with one of Rypdal's sunniest, most rhythmic designs. Imagine The Police or Santana (sans vocals) during one of their extended instrumental jams and you've got "The Return Of Per Ulv", with its gypsy airs built around Rypdal's soaring line. "It's In The Air", with its double-timed drums and its swirling, wintery drone, sets off Rypdal's edgy distortion lead in sharp relief, before giving way to Webern-like strings on "But On The Other Hand". Rypdal, like King Crimson, views 20th Century classicism and rock as mutually compatible, and there is much to enjoy in his music, from thecoven's shuffle of "Private Eye" to the whimsical folk dance of "Dancing Without

This is a wonderful recording which showcases the talents of all four musicians. Andersen's bass work is (as ever) superb, and Frisell's playing is very representative for this time period (early 80s) with fluid, melodic solos linked with Hendrix influenced distortion. John Taylor deserves special mention for his lyrical solos which remind me of Keith Jarret, Lyle Mays, and Bill Evans. A very rewarding recording with fine bonus tracks on this reissue!

UFO - UFO (UFO 1) 1971-1999

UFO - UFO (UFO 1) 1971-1999
flac+cue+art | 251 MB RS | Remastered

For diehard UFO fans, this is the begining of the band, and the start of a hard rock story that endures to this day. This album is a product of the times in which it was created, the echoes of the sixties were fading, and the violence and upheaval of the seventies were on the horizon, and UFO was there to create some sounds that were different than the peace and love era, and a preview of things to come. With the first incarnation of this band, they delivered some solid tunes, "Timothy" is a great tribute to the orginal guru of the acid days, "Boogie" is a solid rockin tune as well, all the songs are cool, and this is a must have album for the collector, and a good intro to the band before they became the icons of the area shows of the seventies during the Michael era. Give it a listen, and turn on, tune in, and drop out back to a time when the winds of change were a coming.

Taking their name from a London club, UFO got off the ground and into orbit in 1969, when drummer Andy Parker joined Hocus Pocus, a band that featured the erstwhile juvenile talents of vocalist Phil Mogg, bassist Pete Way and guitarist Mick Bolton. With a musical style that verged on Space Metal, fusing progressive experimental hard rock with good time boogie, UFO released three albums, 'UFO', "UFO2/Flying' and 'UFO Live' on the Beacon label, all achieving success in the German and Japanese markets.

Pioneers of Italian jazz-rock from the 1970's, PERIGEO were often compared to early BRAND X & actually as innovative as WEATHER REPORT, with a very full sound,
featuring bass, keyboards, drums, guitar and saxes. Their music was only comprised between jazz-rock and straight jazz with a dynamic mix of spacey sounds, no prog influences
whatsoever. No need to precise that each instrumentalist is strongly competent in their respective domains!

Their best works are usually considered "Genealogia" and "La Valle Dei Templi". The band split after their fifth album and reunited some years later for the ambitious
"Alice" double album. From the LP "Alice", the band became more commercial.

Oscar Peterson - The Trio (1973)
MP3 @ 320kbps / RS.com: 91mb / Cover / Genre: Jazz / mainstream

Guitarist Joe Pass and bassist Niels-Henning ?rsted Pedersen both play well on these live performances, but the reason to acquire this set is for the remarkable Oscar Peterson. The pianist brilliantly investigates several jazz styles on "Blues Etude" (including stride and boogie-woogie), plays exciting versions of his "Chicago Blues" and "Easy Listening Blues," tears into "Secret Love," and shows honest emotion on "Come Sunday." Peterson really flourished during his years with Norman Granz's Pablo label, and this was one of his finest recordings of the period. - Allmusic.com

MP3 @ 256kbps / RS.com: 285mb / Genre: Jazz / mainstream, bop

The group that Oscar Peterson led between 1953-58 with guitarist Herb Ellis and bassist Ray Brown was one of the great piano trios of all time. It was never so much a matter of Peterson having two other musicians accompany him as it was that they could meet the pianist as near-equals and consistently inspire him. And unlike most trios, Peterson's had many arranged sections that constantly needed rehearsals and were often quite dazzling. This live double-CD from 1955 has previously unreleased (and unknown) performances of 31 songs (28 standards plus three of Peterson's originals) that were released for the first time in 1994. The pianist is often in typically miraculous form, Ellis (whether playing harmonies, offering short solos or getting his guitar to sound like a conga by tapping it percussively) proves to be a perfect partner, and Brown's subtle but sometimes telepathic contributions should not be overlooked either. - Allmusic.com

Oscar Peterson & Michel Legrand "Trail of Dreams. A Canadian Suite" (2000)

Instrumental, Orchestral Jazz | APE.img+cue&Log | Covers | 285 MB | 52:27 min
(+ MP3 | 320CBR | 44100 | Stereo | 127 MB )

"Trail of Dreams: A Canadian Suite" is hardly a typical Oscar Peterson album. This time, the Canadian pianist doesn't play any standards and doesn't take a bop-oriented approach; in fact, "Trail of Dreams" isn't a straight-ahead jazz album but rather combines jazz with elements of pop, classical, and symphonic music. Recorded in April 2000, this CD finds Peterson joining forces with Michel Legrand, who conducts a lush 24-piece string orchestra.

"Oscar Peterson & Michel Legrand "Trail of Dreams. A Canadian Suite" (2000)

Album Reviews:

Telarc is pleased to announce the release of Oscar Peterson’s "Trail of Dreams: A Canadian Suite". Commissioned by MusicCanadaMusique 2000, the legendary jazz pianist created Trail of Dreams: A Canadian Suite as an ode to the places and people of Canada. Inspired by the 16,000-kilometer, coast-to-coast recreation trail, Trail of Dreams: A Canadian Suite is comprised of twelve compositions: "Open Spaces," "Morning in Newfoundland," "The Okanagan Valley," "Dancetron," "Ballad to P.E.I.," "Cookin’ on the Trail," "Banff the Beautiful," "Lonesome Prairie," "The French Fiddler," "Harcourt Nights," "Manitoba Minuet" and "Anthem to a New Land." Explains Peterson, "I feel that the music speaks to the picturesque and photographic scenic quality of various places in Canada that the Trans Canada Trail passes through". On this latest recording, composer and pianist are on equal terms as Montreal-born Peterson leads his quartet (Swedish guitarist Ulf Wakenius, Danish bassist Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen and British drummer Martin Drew) with a 24-piece string orchestra under the direction of Michel Legrand, the illustrious French composer, conductor, orchestrator and pianist. Legrand’s memorable film tracks include "The Windmills of Your Mind" (from The Thomas Crown Affair), "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg" and "The Summer Knows" (the theme from Summer of ‘42). He has won three Oscars and two Grammy awards, and has collaborated with stars such as Frank Sinatra, Sarah Vaughan, Aretha Franklin and Barbra Streisand. Best known for his brilliant playing, Peterson is equally accomplished as a composer. His lengthy list of compositional credits include 1964’s Canadiana, a suite that traced the escape route used by blacks during the slavery era. This time, he has teamed up with Legrand to expand the vistas to include more elaborate musical structures.

Norman Granz brought Oscar Peterson to New York City in 1949 for the first Jazz at the Philharmonic (JATP) tour. Peterson went on to lead two of the most popular jazz trios in the world, one with bassist Ray Brown and guitarist Herb Ellis, the other with Brown and drummer Ed Thigpen. Today, Peterson has more than 200 recordings to his credit, along with seven Grammies, the Glenn Gould Prize in 1993, and, in June of 1999, he received the prestigious Japanese Praemium Imperiale Award. At age 75, despite having suffered a stroke, he continues to dazzle listeners around the world.

A beautiful collection of old, new, and unexpected lullabies performed by an all-star roster of Smooth Jazz Award winners including Dave Koz, David Benoit and Peter White. Inspired by the birth of his sleep-challenged niece, jazz saxophonist and radio personality Dave Koz launches a new record label with "Golden Slumbers: A Father's Lullaby" , a charming collection of light jazz songs designed to lull little ones and perhaps some not-so-little ones into dreamland. This is a real sleeper of an album, literally.

"Dave Koz & VA "Golden Slumbers.A Father's Lullaby" (2002)
Barnes & Noble' Editorial Reviews:

Inspired by the birth of his sleep-challenged niece, jazz saxophonist and radio personality Dave Koz launches a new record label with "Golden Slumbers: A Father's Lullaby" , a charming collection of light jazz songs designed to lull little ones and perhaps some not-so-little ones into dreamland. The selections include some well-known lullabies, such as "Hush Little Baby," featuring Bruce Watson on keyboards, guitar, and percussion, and "Brahms' Lullaby," which weaves Brian Culbertson's keyboard playing with Hyman Katz's flute lines. Also included are relaxing renditions of timeless classics, such as Rick Braun's flugelhorn-and-keyboard rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," and the dreamy "When You Wish Upon a Star," which teams pianist David Benoit with Koz and his brother Jeff on keyboards and guitar. And what's an album called Golden Slumbers without a Beatles song or two in this case the Kozes' sweet renditions of the title song and "Blackbird." The brothers team up with guitarist Norman Brown and vocalist Tim Davis on a tranquil version of James Taylor's "You Can Close Your Eyes," while flutist Steve Kujala, guitarist Grant Geissman, and keyboardist Brad Cole perform a lovingly lilting version of Phil Collins's "You'll Be in My Heart." Fleshing out the disc are a few original songs, including Peter White's sweet "Charlotte's Song" and the Koz brothers' "Lullaby for Isabelle." Most of the songs here are dedicated to and inspired by the performers' children (some of whom make brief vocal appearances), making this dreamy collection both a calming sleep inducer and a unique celebration of the special bond between fathers and their children.

Henri Dutilleux, Pascal Dusapin - String Quartets

Henri Dutilleux, Pascal Dusapin - String Quartets
Covers, Booklets, Scans | APE EAC LOG CUE | 350 MB | 1CD | RS, MU

"Dutilleux's quartet has to be one of the finest post-war works in the genre. In seven movements (plus interludes) that play without a break, this seventeen minute work conjures up a bewildering variety of nocturnal moods, colours and atmospheres. Yet it is always strongly coherent, the writing unified by the composer's tendency to treat the four instruments of the string quartet as if they were one super-stringed instrument. The performance on this disc is absolutely stunning--the precision of the Arditti Quartet is matched by an imagination and colouristic range that's second to none."

Miles Davis - Get Up With It (2cd)

Miles Davis - Get Up With It [1974]
APE & MP3 + CUE + LOG | TT 124:05 | Full artwork @ 300dpi
APE = 765 mb | MP3 (lame --preset standard) = 178 mb
Jazz / Fusion / Jazz-Rock / Jazz-Funk

This may be the most "commercial" sounding of all of Miles' electric records from the '70s, but it still sounds out there, alien, and futuristic in all the best ways, and Get Up with It is perhaps just coming into its own here in the 21st century.

Without a doubt, one of the greatest albums of them all, a double set only comparable to the likes of the Stooges' "Funhouse" in its darkness, intensity and raw, funky sexuality. Now for starters let's get something straight: I loathe "fusion", and to even CONSIDER putting Miles' music of the '70s in that category - a genre filled with lilly-livered chumps like Return To Forever and the Yellow Jackets - is a great disservice to Miles and his music. From 1969 to '75, Mr. Davis pioneered and created his own unique sounds, a mixture of hard funk, psychedelic rock, avant-garde electronics and free jazz, that has never been equalled in regards to its sonics or its "vibe". There is NOTHING that can touch the raised-middle-finger jab in the guts felt when one puts on discs like "Dark Magus", "Live Evil", "Agharta", "Big Fun" or "On The Corner". The feelings of utter loathing and despair, the overwhelming EMOTION of these discs can be too much, yet nothing can prepare you for 1974's "Get Up With It", a disc of such wildness and total lack of any commercial forethought (and thank the heavens for that) that it was granted pretty much instant deletion upon release and has mainly only been available from Japan for the last 25 years. Start with the cover: a big, slightly unflattering, grainy photo of The Man. It's the sight of a man against the world, battling for his own identity. Hit the first track, "He Loved Him Madly" (a tribute to Duke Ellington), a 32-minute ambient piece only broken up occasionally by Peter Cosey's mumbling guitar lines. It's one of the saddest damn songs you'll ever hear, and you can bet yer booty that if it was made by a bunch of white guys in Berlin ca. '71, every Krautrock freak in town would be hailing it as a classic. Next track "Maiysha" is a schizophrenic one. For ten minutes in merely putters along like a lite Latin number, interrupted sporadically by Miles' Sun Ra-like organ, then it stops, gets into a hard groove and proceeds to move along to Peter Cosey's awesome guitar screeches for another five minutes. Hot. "Honky Tonk" is up next, a brief interlude of stop-start rhythms and noisy organ crunch. It prepares you for the next track the unstoppable "Rated X", THE peak of Miles' - or maybe anyone's - sonic capabilities. Part hyperdive breakbeat rhthyms, part uber-funk, and nine parts pure noise, there is no other sound on earth as MOVING as this song. Get up with it. Disc two starts with "Calypso Frelimo", another 32-minute piece that starts where "Rated X" finishes off. Ecstatic peaks of dark psychedelic jamming, aided by Miles' wah-wah'd trumpet, gel and compete. "Red China Blues" is a brief number that kicks it in a Chess-Records-meets-Ornette way, and the 15-minute+ "Mtume" once again takes you for a ride with its collision of Cosey's guitar (a highly under-rated player in a field with the likes of Sonny Sharrock) and about half a dozen percussionists. Finishing is "Billy Preston", more chilling mid-range avant-funk to close the set. "Get Up With It" is the perfect summation of what was filling Miles' head at the time: the avant electronics of Stockhausen, the cyclical funk of James Brown, the wailing psych guitar of Hendrix, the improvised freeness of Ornette Coleman and as The Man himself put it, "a deep African thing". Many words have been written on Miles' music of this period, but to really GET it, you have to LISTEN to it. Not a word is spoken on GUWI, yet it speaks volumes on its creator's alienation and sense of despair. As far as so-called "out-rock" goes, this is about as "out" as you could get, and certainly about as purely "psychedelic" as music has ever gotten, so do the done thing and get with it. Amazon's Best of 1998
Opting for simplicity this time around, B.B. King gets by with a little help from his excellent backing band, producing an album that's evocative of the Louisiana countryside where it was recorded. After over half a century in the business, King knows what he's about: he makes playing good blues sound easy, and every track on Blues on the Bayou is a treat. ~ Genevieve Williams

Amazon essential recording
There's an undeniable pleasure in listening to a veteran bluesman do his stuff. For Blues on the Bayou, which he also produced, B.B. King presents a stripped-down, simply-arranged recording that's as tight as a coiled spring and smooth as a freshly-polished dance floor. From the first track, "Blues Boys Tune," a slow instrumental dripping with organ riffs, this CD is chock-full of the sort of guitar work that a master like King makes sound effortless. Whether it's the mid-tempo playfulness of "Bad Case of Love," or the slow "Blues Man" with its sparkling-clean guitar work, or the wistfulness of "Darlin' What Happened," or the sheer sweetness of "If I Lost You," Blues on the Bayou proves why King is considered the reigning master of blues guitar. Even the violins sound right and proper here, and King's sidemen turn in some impressive work as well; there are in particular some great piano solos on this disc. On the whole, Blues on the Bayou is a slow-burning treat. ~ Genevieve Williams

Entertainment Weekly
Making his producing debut, King summons a slow-rising, down-home aroma, like bacon and grits in the morning.

Van Morrison - It's Too Late To Stop Now (1974) (2 C'ds)

Van Morrison - It's Too Late To Stop Now (1974) (2 C'ds)
EAC/CD Image | Flac+Cue | Covers | 543Mb
Genre: R&B

Like the white middle class it entertains, rock music exhibits a certain rootlessness, a lack of a living history. This is rock's greatest asset—it is spontaneous and free, contemporary and temporary—but it can also be a liability. The ever-recurrent rock revivals and our fondness for golden oldies express the absence of a past, the very word "revival" indicating that the past is dead. Many artists are exploring that past, but the then and the now are so disjunct that more often than not such efforts are camp, lifeless, effete and irrelevant, or crudely exploitative.

Van Morrison, one of the few (Roger McGuinn and the Band are others) for whom the American musical tradition is passionate and alive, loves this tradition with the insight and fervor of a foreigner. There's no more zealous flag-waver than a citizen by adoption (it's significant that all but one member of the Band are Canadian). Morrison's ardor doesn't require him to imitate the past; his music is so suffused with it, that everything he writes and sings expresses and interprets the past in light of the present, and the present in light of the past.

Because Morrison's music continues an ongoing tradition, it is never diverted by faddish ephemera and never becomes dated. With no Their Satanic Majesties Request to live down, It's Too Late to Stop Now, his 11th album including two he did with Them, celebrates the entirety of Morrison's career. And unlike Bob Dylan's recent tour, for example, these recordings are not a mere remembrance of things past. Even the album's title impels us forward and all of the material, from "Gloria" to "Saint Dominic's Preview" is very much alive.

A third of the album, the standards, show where his music comes from: blues, jazz, gospel, R&B and soul. Note rock's omission: Morrison is closer to Bobby "Blue" Bland and Ray Charles (whose "I Believe to My Soul" he performs here) than he is to rock. The oldies and his own songs are of a piece equally vibrant, revealing Morrison as at once a great traditionalist and an original talent: traditionalist because of his roots, original because he never stops growing—It's Too Late to Stop Now.

Yet Morrison has never enjoyed the mass popularity he deserves. This is partly because he stands quite deliberately outside the pop/rock mainstream, but more importantly because of his relative indifference to lyrics.

On Astral Weeks he tried to write purposefully but ended up with poetastery and parodies. Recently he again tried to write purposefully, but with only intermittent success, most notably "Saint Dominic's Preview." Words seldom interest Morrison except as sounds, and without this in mind you'll be confused when he babbles "sodomysodomysodomy." He's just messing around with the words "inside of me." Having nothing to say, with only emotions to express, his songs must be felt, not thought about. What matter are the stops and starts, the twists and turns, the splutters, the scats and the yowls. Morrison battles with words, distending them, gutting them, forsaking them altogether, as if they blocked the pure sound and the pure feeling toward which he strains. Now even Mick Jagger, one of Morrison's early models, imitates him.

Yet Morrison is not a rock but a jazz singer, hooked on rhythm and sound. He swings and he improvises, which is more in the spirit of jazz than rock. Morrison's problem is that the pop audience demands more than a singer; it wants not just a voice, but a pop personality to fill up the gaps between albums and appearances, something which Morrison has never fabricated.

On It's Too Late Morrison's voice is in fine form, but much else is not. The lavish packaging is unnecessary, and the mix is quirky. Bill Atwood's trumpet should be prominent on "Wild Children," for example, but it's scarcely audible. On several tracks the guitar is under-recorded. And a string quintet which accompanies some of the numbers is often thin and rather shabbily genteel. Occasionally they sparkle (the string arrangement of "I Just Wanna Make Love to You" is witty), but generally they're superfluous.

The other musicians, most of whom have played with Morrison many times before, never detract, but Morrison could be better served. I wish, for instance, that pianist Jef Labes's left hand would occasionally stray below middle C and give the music more bottom. Guitarist John Platania is perfectly competent but a little stiff — the ideal guitarist would be limber and fluent, like Morrison's vocals. Jack Schroer's saxophone is stalwart but unexceptional. These shortcomings, however, are nothing new; Morrison has usually preferred to play with comfortable friends rather than with comparably talented musicians.

But the power of Morrison's vocals overcomes these drawbacks. He attacks "Warm Love" (which on Hard Nose the Highway seemed sweet and innocuous) so fiercely that it becomes an altogether new and far more impressive song. By double-timing the verses he similarly transforms "Here Comes the Night." His version of "I Believe to My Soul," if it misses the haunting gloom of the original, has a stunning dramatic force. Through three sides of the album Morrison's energy never flags, not even during the long and arduous "Saint Dominic's Preview" and "Listen to the Lion." Only on the fourth side does the intensity dissipate as he overindulges in protracted fooling around. But more than an hour's music is crammed into the preceding sides, and it would be churlish to demand more. The man has given so much.

Bartók · Concerto for Orchestra · The Miraculous Mandarin

Bartók · Concerto for Orchestra · The Miraculous Mandarin
City of Birmingham symphony Orchestra · Simon Rattle

APE+CUE | Booklet | 255 MB | 1994

City of Birmingham symphony Orchestra · Sir Simon Rattle

Sir Simon Rattle's Bartokian credentials have never been better displayed on disc, while this particular version of The Miraculous Mandarin ballet is the best to have come my way since Antal Dorati's BBC SO Mercury recording from the 1960s (not to be confused with his earlier—and still unrivalled—Chicago Symphony version of the Suite). Here, tone and texture are securely on target, and I'm happy to report that those oddly elusive second and third trumpets at fig. 21 (which were curiously absent from at least three recent rivals) are here properly reinstated. Granted, the CBSO's playing might not have quite the finish of Leonard Slatkin's Saint Louis Symphony, but Colin Parr brings an appropriate suggestiveness (or perhaps I should say 'sleaze') to the ''Seduction Games'', the strings and winds project with impressive confidence throughout, the trumpets prior to ''The Chase'' are more rhythmically secure than most, and the various dramatic incidents that succeed the closing pages of the Suite (and which include some of Bartok's most powerful music for the stage) are given with a genuine sense of pathos. The chorus is well balanced, the percussion, too while Rattle himself drives all with a combination of animal vigour and teeming imagination. So, if you're after the complete ballet (a preferable option to the senselessly truncated Suite), then this is a definite first choice.

However the disc's main claim to distinction is a live recording of the Concerto for Orchestra that, for sheer character and communicative power, virtually sweeps the board certainly as far as the digital field is concerned. Right from the opening Andante non troppo, it is clear that everyone is wholly engaged in the task in hand. At 3'16'', Rattle intensifies the acceleration process so that the flight into Allegro vivace is especially exciting, whereas at 8'00'' a subtle crescendo over the movement's most exciting climax (where the entire wind and brass sections play flat out) stretches the dynamic capabilities of David Murray's excellent recording to the full. The ''Giuoco delle coppie'' reveals unusually clear pizzicatos, and although the brass paragraphs at 2'57'' (bar 123) are perhaps a little halting, Rattle's affectionate ritardando just prior to the main idea's return (4'05'') can't fail to raise a smile (and listen in particular to the bassoon thereafter).

The ''Elegia'' is especially intense, with a positively outraged return of the first movement's initial forte idea (1'57'')—the dotted trumpet lending a genuinely Magyar tang to the proceedings. Again, a rhapsodizing, folk-like spontaneity spices both the viola passages at 3'32'' and, most especially, its mirror image on the winds a little later. The closing minute or so of the ''Intermezzo'' is more tender than any other I've encountered in recent years, while the finale is full of witty incident: the trilling violas at 2'01'', the expressive divisi strings at 2'26'', the ensuing accelerando and fugue—every little variation played for all it's worth and the whole brimming over with life and energy. However, Rattle's most telling interpretative stroke occurs at 7'23'', that mysterious, curiously elusive piu presto passage that most other conductors treat like some sort of hybrid interpolation marking time until the final pages arrive.

Rattle, though, will have none of it: his reading betrays pin-point focusing, with intelligent phrasing, careful articulation and a sense of dramatic inevitability that lends the passage a new-found musical logic. The dosing moments are thrilling, with a lacerating final chord tailed by a grateful but hardly ecstatic volley of applause. If it had been from the Proms, the cheers and shouts would ~1 doubtless have been deafening—and for good reason. So take my advice and give this one a try: it certainly upstages its most recent predecessors.'

The Birthday Party - Hee-Haw (1988)

The Birthday Party - Hee-Haw (1988)
Separate FLAC - 275MB | mp3 VBR~245kpbs - 73,5MB | 3% recovery inf.
Post-Punk, Noise, Goth Rock

The Birthday Party were one of the darkest and most challenging post-punk groups to emerge in the early '80s, creating bleak and noisy soundscapes that provided the perfect setting for vocalist Nick Cave's difficult, disturbing stories of religion, violence, and perversity.
There are 13 tracks on the CD. Five songs have been taken from the original 1979 Hee haw EP, five songs from the bands first two 7" EP's and the final three songs from the bands Australian LP aptly named 'The Birthday Party'.

The initial tracks on Hee-Haw come from two of their earliest proper Birthday Party singles, "Mr. Clarinet" and "The Friend Catcher." Three other tracks included on the 1980 self-titled American-only compilation, the squealing sax and raunch of "Hats on Wrong," the slightly more straightforward punch and thrash of "Guilt Parade," and "Riddle House," surface as well. All showcase the violent, thrashing energy of the Party of legend perfectly; even the organ on "Mr. Clarinet" sounds like it's being strangled as much as being played. Cave may be in utterly hyperdramatic mode throughout, spitting out barks on "Happy Birthday" and braying out the title call on the slow, brilliant burn of "The Friend Catcher," but the band aren't holding back either; Howard's spindly, aggro guitar work complements Calvert's drum punch nicely, balancing nerves and body slam, while Pew and Harvey flesh out everything else in the same spirit. Things aren't quite on the level of sheer sonic pain of later releases, but with the help of engineer Tony Cohen, who brings out the overall performances well, the fivesome is already well on its curious way. The last five songs come from the original Hee-Haw EP, which was also the final Boys Next Door release. While not quite as frazzled as what the group would soon fully mutate into, the tracks do have a more pushing, discordant air than the earlier Boys tracks, Cave still hesitant at points but starting to let go a bit elsewhere. "Faint Heart" has a great breakdown into random vocal mumblings and instrumental nuttiness, especially on piano, while "The Hair Shirt" especially is already the Birthday Party in anything but name.

Tracks:
1. Mr. Clarinet
2. Happy Birthday
3. Hats on Wrong
4. Guilt Parade
5. Friend Catcher
6. Waving My Arms
7. Catman
8. Riddle House
9. Catholic Skin
10. Red Clock

Review:

One more important record to the art of the reed & bass duets, now with Vandermark on reeds, and some of today's greatest modern jazz bassists: Ken Kessler, Ingebrigt Håker Flaten, Nate McBride and Wilbert De Joode. Not only because of the variety of reeds used, and the different styles of the bass players, but also the approach differs greatly on all these relatively short improvisations. Some are fierce and wild, some boppish, and some are very sensitive and restrained, creating a kind of tenderness which is unusual for the usually muscular Vandermark. The sequence is Kessler (six tracks), Håker Flaten (five tracks) for the first CD, which is called "Day", and then McBride (five tracks) and De Joode (six tracks) for the "Night" CD. Although the pieces are improvised, they were rehearsed around specific thematic sounds, and the best take made it to the disk. The recordings were made on February 4 and 5 of this year in Chicago, the city where Vandermark, Kessler and McBride reside. The twenty-two tracks show a broad variety of angles for the sax-bass duo, demonstrating not only the skills of the musicians, but also the breadth of the subgenres of modern jazz, the wealth of possibilities of improvisation, using influences from blues over swing to bop and free. From Mingus over Giuffre to the wildest avant-garde, it is always brought with conviction, depth and focus, with Vandermark often a defining element in the music, yet sufficiently adaptable to match the styles of the four bass-players. Rich and subtle. (stef for freejazz-stef.blogspot.com)

This album is unique among Harvey Mandel albums. It can be described only as a "Produced" Jam . . ."Produced" because it was done in a studio, but kept the spontaneity of the all-night session that was jam. The uniqueness comes with the string arrangements of Shorty Rogers on "Baby Batter" and "Midnight Sun". They're used as a mellow bottom (almost like a rythm guitar) for a mountain of fine music. The 1997 release from guitar master Harvey "The Snake" Mandel (the world's premier psychedelic guitar player), entitled Planetary Warrior, is a contemporary twelve song adventure in vocals and instrumentals which features vocalist Sonny Reece.
The six instrumentals find Mandel showcasing his concise chops, his command of a multitude of tone pedal controls and exposing his unique take on Link Wray's "Rumble". On balance, Planetary Warrior serves up a hard-edged platter of rock/blues outer space nourishment. Guitar 9 Records

38 Special - Anthology 2 CD 2001

38 Special - Anthology 2 CD 2001
FLAC (Seperate Files)+Art | 1.04 GB RS | Remastered

This compilation has everything and then some of their material. Every band should be as consistant when packaging an Anthology. These two discs cover all the different line-ups from original, before LJ joined on bass to the current line-up with Danny Chauncey and Don Barnes on guitar.

There's little question that Hip-O's 2001 double-disc set, Anthology, is a thorough, definitive overview of .38 Special's career, spanning from their hit-laden A&M albums, through their '90s albums for Charisma and Razor & Tie, and wrapping up with a studio cut from the CMC International release, Live at Sturgis. This is a good thing, if you're just judging an album in terms of comprehensiveness, which just may be what the dedicated are looking for, but if you're not dedicated, this collection is awfully long. That's not to say it doesn't do a good job of summarizing the group's career, since it does, but the hits -- "Rockin' in to the Night," "Hold on Loosely," "Caught Up in You," "If I'd Been the One," "Back Where You Belong" -- are so good, that the rest of the material is shown as the good, but generic, material that it is. So, for the casual fans, it might be better to seek out a more concise collection, including the 20th Century Masters disc, since they're almost all there. Yes, this collection contains a few gems not readily available on that disc or other collections, the teachers theme, "Teacher, Teacher," and the hit ballad "Second Chance", but this still remains the province of the converted, not the casual.

The Blues Magoos were one of the most underrated U.S. bands of the late '60s, known almost exclusively for their one irresistible hit "(We Ain't Got) Nothing Yet," which charted at number five in July 1967. Kaleidescopic Compendium: The Best of the Blues Magoos confirms the group's depth. The disc compiles a generous 23 tracks from their first three albums and a brace of single sides. The group's psychedelia holds up better than most from the period. Andy Sandoval's four-page history of the group is concise, complete, and entertaining. [AMG]

A Winner - and a great deal!

Back in the late 60s I just about wore out my copy of "Psychadelic Lollypop" playing it over and over, and playing along with it. I drove my parents crazy playing both drums *and* guitar along with great tunes like "We Ain't Got Nothin' Yet", "Love Seems Doomed" and thier version of "Tobacco Road"- in fact, I learned "Tobacco Road" from that album.

This album contains all those songs from that album and more- and at the price it's a steal. The Blues Magoos were a wonderfully raw and powerful group who could craft some great, catchy tunes- yet still played with a tremendous amount of raw punk energy. And any group that can brag (as they did on the liner notes of "Lollypop") that they were thrown out of their gig at the Whiskey for "playing too loud"- well, that just cements their proto-punk credentials in my book. If you haven't heard them and you're a fan of grungy 60s pop, get this album.

The Derek Trucks Band - Already Free (2009)

The Derek Trucks Band - Already Free
FLAC (Tracks)+Cue+Log+Covers | 390 Mb | MP3 CBR 320 kbps | 130 Mb
Jazz-Rock; Blues

“Three things worth knowing about Derek Trucks: He is young, he is a veteran, and he is the most awe-inspiring electric slide guitar player performing today." - Ashley Kahn, Wall Street Journal
“One of the best guitar players out there." - Willie Nelson
One of the most critically acclaimed guitarists and the youngest musician to be named in Rolling Stone's list of the Top Hundred Guitarists of All Time, Derek Trucks has completed his much anticipated sixth studio album with The Derek Trucks Band, Already Free, available January 13, 2009. As well, the album's first single, a stirring cover of Bob Dylan and The Band's “Down in the Flood" from the album The Basement Tapes, was just released.
The album was self-produced by Trucks and recorded in his Jacksonville, Florida home studio. Nearly a year in the making and brimming with a newfound focus on creating original material, Already Free is the band's natural evolution as they move forward integrating influences that span a variety of musical genres. Known for their blues roots, the group takes this album well beyond blues to incorporate the larger sounds of rock & soul.
Over the course of several albums, various bands and countless tours, Trucks has explored an exciting array of musical styles. On Already Free, Trucks has written original songs and reinvigorated old ones, introducing a profound new vision. One hears blues, soul, jazz, flourishes of world music from Afrobeat to qawwali, even the advanced tonalities of the modern European masters. The band, which consists of Derek Trucks on guitar, bassist Todd Smallie, percussionist Count M'Butu, drummer Yonrico Scott, keyboardist Kofi Burbridge and singer Mike Mattison, was joined by their famous friends - pals like Doyle Bramhall II, Oteil Burbridge and Trucks' wife Susan Tedeschi can all be heard on the album. Bramhall takes over the vocal duties on the two songs, “Maybe This Time" which mixes languid guitars and Eastern flavor and “Our Love," a companion piece with the piercing guitar riffs signature of Bramhall/Trucks collaborations. The album's first single, “Down in the Flood" from Bob Dylan and The Band's album The Basement Tapes, has almost more relevance now, post-Hurricane Katrina, than when Dylan wrote it in 1967. “I think it really turned out to be one of the most powerful tracks on the record. I think lyrically it's pretty timely. Crash on the levee, down in the flood, are so significant post-Katrina. There are some good metaphors, as there are in most Dylan tunes," says Trucks. True to form, the album also features Trucks' electrifying slide guitar handiwork that at the tender age of 29, has garnered him much accolade, including the cover of Rolling Stone Magazine which hailed him as one of the New Guitar Gods. Raised in a home filled with music, Trucks picked up a guitar at nine and was quickly considered a prodigy. He has gone on to a storybook guitar career playing with some of the greatest musicians of all time including Eric Clapton, Willie Nelson, Buddy Guy, a regular stint with the Allman Brothers Band (his uncle, Butch Trucks is a founding member), performing on Clapton's Crossroads Guitar Festival Emmy-winning DVD, opening a tour for Carlos Santana to name a few of the highlights. Already Free reflects all of Trucks' many influences and experiences, and highlights the quintessential Derek Trucks Band sound of mixing soulful vocals and expert guitar playing.

38 Special - Special Forces (1982)

38 Special - Special Forces (1982)
FLAC (seperate Files)+Art | 286 MB RS | Source - The Outback

Released in 1982, Special Forces contains .38 Special's best song in "Caught Up in You," a hook-filled, smoothly sung radio rock gem that gets its energy from the grace and power of its chorus.

It's here that the guitar work of Don Barnes and Jeff Carlisi combine to give Donnie Van Zant's singing a slick ride, fluently shifting from soft-tempered to vocally blatant at the change of a chord. But the hooks and the well-proportioned rhythms don't stop there. "You Keep Runnin' Away" gave the album its second charted single, which peaked at number 38, and the borderline boogie rock dash of "Rough Housin'" is among Special Forces' best cuts. Even secondary efforts like "Chain Lightnin'" and "Breakin' Loose" fit in comfortably with the rest of the tracks, offering up a hearty dose of the group's early Southern rock taste. Wisely, .38 Special kept the musical recipe similar to its last couple of releases, with the only striking difference coming from an even greater ability to design a memorable and punchy lead single. Because Special Forces administers a solid mix of Top 40 polish and pure guitar rock, .38 Special gained a much larger fan base upon its release

The Leaves were an American garage band formed in California in 1963. They are best known for their version of the song "Hey Joe", which was a hit in 1966. Theirs is the earliest release of this song, which became a rock standard.

One of the first L.A. folk-rock groups to spring up in the wake of the Byrds in the mid-'60s, the Leaves are most remembered for recording the first -- and one of the most successful -- rock versions of "Hey Joe," which reached the Top 40 (and was a huge California hit) in 1966. None of their other releases approached this success (although "Too Many People" was a local hit), but the group recorded a fair number of strong covers and original songs during their brief existence. More explicitly Stones and Beatles-influenced than the Byrds, they didn't project as strong an identity as competitors like the Byrds or Love, despite displaying considerable talent for harmony rockers in both the folk-rock and British Invasion styles. After cutting some singles and an album for the tiny Mira label, they moved to Capitol and disbanded after a disappointing follow-up (All the Good That's Happening, 1967) that offered less distinguished material and a more diluted sound. Leaves bassist Jim Pons went on to join the Turtles for a while in the late '60s.

[AMG]

History:

The band was founded by bass player Jim Pons, inspired by hearing The Beatles while a student at Cal State Northridge in Los Angeles. Originally called The Rockwells, they were fraternity brothers who formed a group and then taught themselves how to play. Besides Pons, the line up consisted of John Beck (vocalist), Bill Rinehart (lead guitar, replaced by Bobby Arlin), Tom Ray and Robert Lee Reiner.

They began by playing surf and dance music at parties. Their first actual show was in the school gym with Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band. In 1966 The Byrds left their residency at Ciro's on Sunset Strip after making their first hit, and The Leaves (as they were by now known) were chosen to replace them. It was there they were discovered by popular singer and actor Pat Boone, who got them their first record contract.

Their first single, "Too Many People", was a local hit in Los Angeles. The Leaves released "Hey Joe" in November of '65, and dissatisfied with the sound, pulled it. They released a second version in early '66, which flopped. Original guitarist Bill Rinehart left, and the Leaves redid the song again with a fuzztone by new guitarist Bob Arlin. This version of the song, the best of the uptempo versions, became a hit, hitting #1 in L.A. It debuted on both Billboard and Cash Box on May 21, 1966. It peaked at #31 on Billboard, while showing a humbler peak position of #43 on Cash Box. The song ran nine weeks on both national charts.

Their debut album Hey Joe followed. It took a run on the Billboard charts for 5 weeks, beginning on July 30, 1966, peaking at #127. The album did not make it onto the Cash Box charts.

The band appeared on TV shows - American Bandstand, Shivaree, Shebang - and briefly in a Hollywood film, The Cool Ones (1967). One more album, All the Good That's Happening, was released before the band broke up in 1967 when Pons left to join the pop group The Turtles (In the early 70s Pons played bass with Frank Zappa). Arlin went on to form heavy psychedelic band The Hook. The band reunited in 1970 before Pons becmae a member Zappa's band. The reunited lineup included Jim Pons on rhythym guitar, John Beck on lead guitar, Buddy Skylar lead singer from thre Hook and The Spencer Davis Group, Al Nichols on Bass from the Turtles, and Bob "Bullet" Bailey on drums. The band did some touring and performed at local Los Angeles based nightclubs before disbanding in 1971.

A new generation of music fans discovered the band when their version of "Hey Joe" was included in the classic 1972 garage rock compilation, Nuggets. According to the Nuggets liner notes, the as yet unnamed band was hanging around a tree-shaded pool, smoking, when a newcomer gave the traditional 60s greeting, "What's happening?" "The leaves are happening," came the answer, which struck them all as a good name for a band.

Diana Krall - Discography (1993 - 2007)

Diana Krall - Discography (1993 - 2007)
Jazz | FLAC | 4Gb | English

Diana Krall is a Canadian jazz pianist and singer. She is known for her graceful contralto vocals. In 1993, Krall released her first album, Stepping Out, which she recorded with John Clayton and Jeff Hamilton. It caught the attention of producer Tommy LiPuma, who produced her second album, Only Trust Your Heart (1995). Her third, All for You: A Dedication to the Nat King Cole Trio (1996), was nominated for a Grammy and continued for 70 weeks in the Billboard jazz charts. Love Scenes (1997) quickly became a hit record with the trio of Krall, Russell Malone (guitar) and Christian McBride (bass). Orchestral arrangements by Johnny Mandel provided the background on When I Look In Your Eyes (1999); more Grammy nominations came along, and she was rewarded as Best Jazz Musician of the Year. The band mix was kept, following arrangements on The Look of Love (2001) created by Claus Ogerman; this record achieved platinum status and reached the top 10 of the Billboard 200. The Look of Love went to number one on the Canadian album charts and went quadruple platinum in that country. After marrying Elvis Costello, she worked with him as a lyricist and started to compose her own songs, resulting in the album The Girl in the Other Room. The album, released in April 2004, quickly rose to the top five in the United Kingdom and made the Australian top 40 album charts. She also joined Ray Charles on his Genius Loves Company album in 2004 on the song, "You Don't Know Me."

38 Special - Strength in Numbers 1986

38 Special - Strength in Numbers 1986
FLAC (Seperate Files)+cue (wav) Art | 256 MB RS | Original Recording

Because Special Forces administers a solid mix of Top 40 polish and pure guitar rock, .38 Special gained a much larger fan base upon its releaseReleased in 1982, Special Forces contains .38 Special's best song in "Caught Up in You," a hook-filled, smoothly sung radio rock gem that gets its energy from the grace and power of its chorus.

Frank Zappa - Hot Rats [Classic Records 200g (Quiex SV-P)] 24-bit/96kHz

Cover

Frank Zappa - Hot Rats
Classic Records 200g (Quiex SV-P)
Mastered by Bernie Grundman (all analog)
24-bit/96kHz | FLAC, CUE and M3U |~ 980 mb
incl. Cover pics | Rock, Jazz-Rock | 1969

Allmusic.com rating 4.5 out of 5 Stars

IMO still FZ's masterpiece, this version beats all previous versions so clearly that you must hear to believe.

After releasing a 'mother lode of Mothers' (of Invention) classics, by 1969 leader Frank Zappa was ready to breakthrough other musical barriers that were still holding popular music in a conservative headlock. Being one if not the first album to be recorded using 16 tracks (twice the number being used at the time on both sides of the Atlantic), Hot Rats became a leading edge in both modern recording technology and the evolution of jazz/rock- fusion. Mostly instrumental, it features six original compositions; three loose jam pieces, the remainder being tight ensemble arrangements.
Some of the finest players around come together in varying combinations, all-the-while showcasing FZ's guitar virtuosity. Among others, Lowell George of Little Feat-fame lends guitar, jazz violinists extraordinaire Don 'Sugarcane' Harris and Jean-Luc Ponty plus fellow Mother Ian Underwood's keyboard and woodwind work, complete the leader's advanced vision. Last but not least, the legendary Captain Beefheart brings his unique pipes to the infamous Willie The Pimp. Soon to become a concert staple and fan favorite thereafter, Peaches En Regalia is truly a modern jazz standard, eventually covered by the likes of Phish and The Dixie Dregs. Also included are Son of Mr. Green Genes, Little Umbrellas, The Gumbo Variations and It Must Be A Camel.
Mastered and cut directly from the original analog master tape by Bernie Grundman under the supervision of Gail Zappa.

Label

Track listing

All songs are written by Frank Zappa.

Side one
1. "Peaches en Regalia" – 3:58
2. "Willie the Pimp" – 9:25
3. "Son of Mr. Green Genes" – 8:58

Side two
4. Little Umbrellas" – 3:09
5. "The Gumbo Variations" – 12:55
6. "It Must Be a Camel" – 5:15

Compact disc variations

In 1987 Zappa remixed Hot Rats for re-issue on compact disc. This drew criticism from fans who preferred the original 1969 mix on the LP versus those who preferred the remix version (as did Zappa's remixes of the original MOI albums and the Lumpy Gravy album, which controversially featured completely re-recorded bass and drum tracks). "Willie the Pimp" is edited differently during the introduction and guitar solo. "The Gumbo Variations" has 4 minutes of additional material including an introduction and guitar and saxophone solo sections which were cut from the vinyl. Other differences in the two mixes include added piano and flute on "Little Umbrellas" and significant changes to the overall ambience and dynamic range.

More infos about the differences between vinyl and CD can be found here!

Eric Sardinas And Big Motor (2008)

Eric Sardinas And Big Motor (2008)
Individual Flac Files: 341 Mb | Mp3 (320 Kbps): 112 Mb | Audio CD (28 April 2008)
Label: Pinnacle - ASIN: B0014ID98C - Blues, Slide Guitar Blues

With Eric Sardinas and Big Motor, Sardinas further refines his trademark sonic fury, mixing in bits and pieces of 1960s-styled British blooze-rock, John Lee-inspired boogie, Southern soul, old school Delta blues, even a bit of twangy, country-tinged blues (think early-1970s Johnny Winter). Bass guitarist Levell Price and drummer Patrick Caccia provide a locomotive beat behind Sardinas' six-string pyrotechnics; together, the trio raises a lot of joyful noise for three guys.

The album-opening "All I Need" is a 120mph raver, built upon an unrelenting rhythm, embroidered with taut, barbed-wire fretwork. The infectious, melodic "Ride" hides its pop overtones beneath a soaring guitar line, a Gospel-tinged chorus, and a Hendrix heartbeat...kind of reminds me of Clapton-era Delaney & Bonnie. The up-tempo "Gone To Memphis" is a soulful, uplifting tune with some finely-engraved Dobro work and warm vocal harmonies.

Lest listeners think that Sardinas has gone soft, the rollicking boogie-based "It's Nothing New" turns the amp up a notch, and by the time that ES and Big Motor kick into the juke-joint stomp "Just Like That," you'll be turning over chairs and dancing on the table. Sardinas' showcases some nasty, menacing slide-playing here as the band bashes-and-crashes behind his switchblade fretwork. A relatively straight-forward cover of the Elvis gem "Burning Love" displays Sardinas' playful side, while a cover of Tony Joe White's "As The Crow Flies" offers up a true 180-proof Delta gumbo with a soulful vocal turn and imaginative six-string solos.

Keith Jarrett: La Scala

Keith Jarrett: La Scala
Classic | Playtime 78:36 | MP3 320k | Size 190 Mb
Released 1997 | Label ECM 1640 | Full scan

Rarely has a piece of music touched me in the way that La Scala has. The music in the first, lengthy section, enters some extremely dark and disturbing places. It's almost as if some kind of violent, primitive exorcism is taking place - Jarrett seems engaged in a titanic struggle with overwhelming inner forces. The overall effect is of an intense and terrible mysticism - it felt somehow blasphemous to even listen to this. But the best is yet to come, in the midst of part 2. Indescribably beautiful. No bad points to speak of really. The liner notes are fairly off-putting, Jarrrett is not one for modesty. But, to invert a phrase of Winston Churchill's, he doesn't really have much to be modest about. In my opinion the greatest of Jarrett's solo piano performances, and one of the greatest pieces of music ever recorded.--www.reviewcentre.com

Jazz | FLAC & mp3 (320k/s) | 347 & 147 MB | scans | 63:02
Bluebird (1992)

Sonny Rollins's RCA recordings of 1962-64 found him really stretching out his style, listening to and learning from Ornette Coleman without losing his own musical personality. This CD, in addition to two numbers with bassist Bob Cranshaw and the congos of Candido ("Jungoso" and "Bluesongo") that were originally on the album What's New, has four selections from Now's the Time along with four very different alternate takes. For example, the original version of "52nd Street Theme" was four minutes long but the alternate is 14. The personnel also differs much of the time with cornetist Thad Jones and pianist Herbie Hancock making appearances, but the emphasis is on the exciting improvisations of Rollins, one of the great tenorsaxophonists of all time. - by Scott Yanow, AMG

Review:

The follow-up to the magnificent "Johnny Griffin Sextet" (see my review), "The Little Giant" was recorded in August 1959, almost a year and a half after "Sextet" -- an eternity between sessions by jazz standards of the late 50s. Well, I suppose Griffin had a good excuse, as he did a little gigging from coast to coast, and played several months with someone named Monk at the Five Spot. Anyway, "The Little Giant" was worth the wait. Griffin again employs a sextet for this date -- Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Julian Priester on trombone, Wynton Kelly on piano, Sam Jones on bass and "Tootie" Heath on drums. This time, however, the formula doesn't quite reach the dizzying heights of "Sextet," though the disc does feature some very nice original compositions by a virtually unknown Chicago pianist named Norman Simmons ("Olive Refractions," "The Message," and "Venus and the Moon"). That being said "The Little Giant" sure plays big. (Michael B. Richman on amazon.com)

John Zorn - The Bribe (1998)

John Zorn - The Bribe - Variations And Extensions On Spillane [1998]
APE & MP3 + CUE + LOG | TT 78:54 | Full artwork @ 300dpi
APE = 471 mb | MP3 (vbr lame "--preset standard") = 112 mb
Jazz / Avant-Garde / Modern Composition

Conceived and recorded in 1986 as the soundtrack to three 30-minute radio plays, John Zorn's The Bribe is subtitled "variations and extensions on Spillane." So the composer-altoist's followers ought to know what's coming. Some 26 separate tracks, ranging in duration from 47 seconds to more than 11 minutes long, are performed by an East Village A-team: Zorn and Marty Ehrlich on reeds; trombonist Jim Staley; harpists Zeena Parkins and Carol Emanuel; guitarists Robert Quine and Reck; keyboardists Anthony Coleman and Wayne Horvitz; turntablist Christian Marclay; percussionist Bobby Previte; and Ikue Mori on drum machines. The individualities of these improvisors tend to be subsumed in Zorn's quick-cut/hard-edit directorial style, which favors sudden narrative leaps and striking contrasts over highly developed, personal statements. But there's a lot of hip playing anyway, bits and pieces of which demand recognition and appreciation. Zorn blows alto on "The Taxman Cometh" and Ehrlich out-squalls him on "Skit Rhesus." Birds whistle over drones and harp on "Dreams of the Red Chamber." Surf-guitar rocks out on "Chippewa" and "Strip Central." Organs, synths, celeste, and piano collude in the heavenly "Victoria Lake." "Pink Limousine" has a dozen episodes of its own, and "Skyline," is as close to a resolving piece as Zorn has yet released. If the overall effect deifies a single atmosphere, The Bribe is more done deal than anything-goes jam. It's through-composed, maybe fixed as to when rather than what the musicians play. The stage production seems to be about temptations, betrayals, sudden impulses and turnarounds, chases, and other such matters noir. Listeners are meant to hold on for the ride - to adopt the viewer's perspective - rather than expect cosmic revelation or emotional empathy from the music. For all the apparent randomness of its ratchet and samples and jaw's-harp plucks and cheesy themes wrapped in straightforward horn licks subverted by tasty guitar, Zorn has a plan here, a theatrical mandate. Consider the CD an alternate soundtrack to Touch of Evil or some other movie masterpiece; it's not likely - or is it? - that this sliced-and-diced construct is the soundtrack to Zorn's life.

Steve Lacy, Roswell Rudd, Kent Carter, Beaver Harris - Trickles

Steve Lacy, Roswell Rudd, Kent Carter, Beaver Harris - Trickles
Flac & MP3, 320 kbps | 214.7 MB & 91,2 MB | Rec. 1976 | Label: Black Saint | CD 1993

One of the early Black Saint albums, this set features a reunion between soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy and trombonist Roswell Rudd; bassist Ken Carter and drummer Beaver Harris complete the quartet. Although Lacy and Rudd had had a group 15 years earlier that exclusively played Thelonious Monk tunes, in this case they perform five of Lacy's diverse originals, stretching themselves on such tunes as "Trickles" and "Robes." The music is less melodic than expected but does have its moments of interest.

This double concerto for two electric guitars and symphony orchestra features metal guitarist Ronni Le Tekro and the Riga Festival Orchestra. Meat Puppets - Up On The Sun 1985

Meat Puppets - Up On The Sun 1985
MP3 @ 256 | 107 MB | Cover
Genre: Rock

Championed by Nirvana and rightly so!

UP ON THE SUN juxtaposes loose and lazy vocals with trippy wordplay and solid, skilled musicianship. Joyous, chiming gems like "Maiden's Milk," with its happy insane-asylum whistling, and the glistening "Swimming Ground," sound like music for Peanuts characters on acid, loose and shambling and ecstatically sunny. The delightfully named "Enchanted Porkfist" features tight riffery that strongly echoes the Allman Brothers. But amid the happily stoned atmosphere is an undercurrent of seriousness, especially on the wistful title track and the minor-key "Two Rivers," which has a Zen-like simplicity to its lyrics, and a haunting melody that shimmers, eddies, and swirls most hypnotically. The 1999 reissue contains some interesting early mixes, which should please the record's many devotees.

Curt Kirkwood - vocals, guitar
Cris Kirkwood - vocals, bass

Clutch - Clutch (1995)
APE+CUE+LOG or MP3 CBR320 | 354Mb or 125Mb | Complete Scans (600dpi)
Genre: Stoner Rock

Moving the guitars forward in the mix paid off in spades for Clutch, who continued with their familiar formula of mixing Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath on their sophomore album.

Without straying at all from its roots, the band adds a little more funk to its sound à la Primus, which makes for a more consistent set of songs than last time. Not to mention that the stars shine brighter than they did last time around: "Spacegrass" alone should have become an instant classic, but following minor rotation on hard rock stations, the song - and the band with it - was delegated a cult status, compared to the likes of contemporaries Coal Chamber and Korn.

You don't change a winning team. so here is the second volume of the Vivaldi Edition's complete recording of the chamber concertos and cantatas with L'Astrée,whose performances have already set new standards in this repertoire. (To mark the occasion, the first volume is at last reissued in a new presentation). As in the previous release in the series (with the mezzo-soprano Laura Polverelli), three concertos are here juxtaposed with three chamber cantatas, offering another chance to confirm the Prete rosso's inexhaustible inventiveness in these two genres, which gave him as much scope for instrumental and vocal virtuosity as his concertos with orchestra or his operas. In the concerto RV 100, we get a genuine dialogue between flute, violin, and bassoon, with the latter exploited for both its expressive range of colours and its great agility; in RV 92 and RV 108, it is the recorder's skill that is sorely tested. As to the cantatas, this time for soprano and continuo, they demand a soloist with faultless technique and a highly dramatic temperament: the almost hysterical outbursts, the acrobatic leaps, and the perilous series of top Cs in Geme l'onda are certainly not within the grasp of just any soprano! This is why L'Astrée have called on one of the most eminent Vivaldians of our day, the marvellous Gemma Bertagnolli, whose recent performances with Alessandrini and de Marchi have been universally acclaimed, and who achieves fresh triumphs here.

"With the help of a really lifelike recording – the instruments truly seemed to be in my listening room – the music just leaps off the page. The quicker movements all dance, where older and heavier bands were apt to make them slog, while in the dialogues between instruments the phrases really answer each other. In slow movements, on the other hand, the music is made to speak. Once again, it is notable – especially in the Largo of RV87 – how much more romantic this music sounds played with freedom by a small original instruments group than it ever did with larger bands who were trying to put on baroque manners.
In the three cantatas, Laura Polverelli has a splendidly rich timbre, so much so that I almost took her for a contralto; but later Vivaldi sends her up to heights we don’t ask of contraltos and she ascends them with ease. Her lower notes are so splendidly rich that I wish there had been more of them....I rejoice in the sheer life of all these performances...the music is all magnificent, Vivaldi at his richest."
