… A legend says that Dixieland music, the beginnings of jazz, was born in New Orleans from where it was carried by river steamboats up the Mississippi river towards Memphis , Saint Louis and finally Chicago …
The Belgrade Dixieland Orchestra was founded in 2001. right at the beginning of the third millenium of the new era. Just when everybody thought that this wonderful type of jazz has forever died out in our country, some strong energy kindled eight brave people to save from oblivion, and to present to the public, this wonderful atmosphere and lightsome music dating
from the beginnig of previous century.
Out of a barely visible, lonely and shimmering light of hope, The Belgrade Dixieland orchestra, for a very short time, grew into an important cultural institution of the Serbian capital and became a unique representative of the music culture of its country.Being the only orchestra of this type in the country, it is directly responsible for the Dixieland's triumphant rise from the ashes of the foundations, built for decades by jazzmen from the Balkans.
And how did it all begin? As some of the first native preformers of Dixieland claim, Dixieland came to the parts of the former Yugoslavia and timidly sneaked into the ears of the listeners, way back in 1953. According to the calendar, from that wonderful moment, a half of century has passed! Under the influence of the legendary fim “Bathing beauty”, just as mushroom do after the rain, many Dixieland orchestras popped up. The country was rapidly overcome by an unbelievable atmosphere of delight, optimisim and completely new sound, which no one had ever felt before…
Half a century later, Dixieland, the oldest jazz stream, is of monumental importance to our country. The CD that you now have in your hands was published by today's only active Dixieland orchestar in Serbia.
Whether and how it will influence the new generations of the preformers and jazz lovers in this country, and especially the people who are professionally responsible for the preserving of the cultural values, remains to be seen in the following half of the century. Or perhaps even less?
