Chick Corea features an acoustic quartet on this CD, performing a full set of original material. Although the music is tied to a lengthy, complicated, and philosophical fictional piece outlined in great length in the liner notes (which are not really worth bothering with), the performances by the group (which is comprised of Corea on piano, Bob Berg on tenor and soprano, bassist John Patitucci, and drummer Gary Novak) are excellent. Berg continues to grow and show individuality beyond the Michael Brecker influence (especially on soprano), the interplay between Corea and Patitucci is as impressive as ever, and Novak is alert to the constantly changing musical events. Although none of these songs are destined to become standards, the almost-continuous music holds on to one's attention.

This CD reissue brings back an Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis session in which the distinctive tenor saxophonist is joined by a 13-piece big band arranged by Oliver Nelson. Most significant is the inclusion of the original version of "Stolen Moments" (here called "The Stolen Moment" and predating the more famous Oliver Nelson recording by several months). Eric Dolphy is in the backup group but is not heard from in a solo capacity. There are some spots for trumpeters Richard Williams, Clark Terry and Bobby Bryant along with Nelson on alto but this is primarily Davis' showcase. On a set comprised of four Oliver Nelson originals, the ballad "You Are Too Beautiful" and the leader's "Jaws," Lockjaw as usual shows plenty of emotion during his driving solos. All Music Guide

Hopefully, the reappearance of this revelatory 1956 record will force many critics and musicians to reconsider Brubeck's stature in the world of jazz piano. Recorded late at night in his Oakland, California, home, it was Brubeck's first full solo-piano recording and also his first all-original record, and it illustrates his marvelously elegant fusion of classical and cocktail conceptions. Brubeck understands blues and swing, but he uses these elements as tools for effect, not as default settings. Brubeck instead offers a fuller palette of emotions and ideas--playful, sober, stern, happy, pensive, cerebral. While "In Your Own Sweet Way" and "The Duke" have become standards, the album includes obscure gems such as the minisuite "Two-Part Contention," with its many tempo, mood, and stylistic turns, and the discreetly swinging "Walkin' Line," although he lapses into melodrama with "Weep No More." Still, on "The Duke" (originally titled "The Duke Meets Darius Milhaud"), it's fascinating to hear how easily and smoothly he fits all 12 scale notes into his opening bass figure. As he himself points out in the brilliant original notes , the marriage of European music and American music dates back to New Orleans jazzmen such as King Oliver. And to dismiss any notions of intellectualism in jazz would be a great insult to everyone from Oliver to Charlie Parker to John Lewis to Bill Evans to Sun Ra. Overall, I'd say this volume falls just a fraction below those containing the later symphonies. The First Symphony recorded in Vienna's Konzerthaus, is a little brash but still fairly enjoyable; no match for the Concertgebouw CD recording but worth having when it is accompanied by such stirring performances of the Second and Third. This is definitely the best way to experience Bernstein's Mahler. He is a very theatrical conductor and the huffing & puffing, combined with extraneous stage noises and various gaffes from the orchestra/s are easier to put with as part of a film than on CD. The Ely Cathedral Resurrection is spectacular but I could barely watch Bernstein's highly camp manner in the closing choral section. He is more self-controlled elsewhere. The Third from the Musikverein is a wonderful reading and superbly and discreetly filmed. So, if previously you have hesitated before trying Bernie's all-or-nothing Mahler, these films can be cordially recommended. People looking for Mahler on CD should mix and match different conductors or else get the Kubelik set on DG.

Taylor Swift abandons any pretense that she's a teen on her second album, Fearless which isn't to say that she suddenly tarts herself up, running away from her youth in a manner that's all too familiar to many teen stars. Swift's maturation is deliberate and careful, styled after the crossover country-pop of Shania Twain and Faith Hill before they turned into divas. Despite the success of her self-titled 2006 debut, there's nothing at all diva-like about Swift on 2008's Fearless: she's soft-spoken and considerate, a big sister instead of a big star. Nowhere is this truer than on "15," a kind warning for a teen to watch her heart sung from the perspective of a woman who's perhaps twice that age a sly trick for the 18-year-old Swift. There may be a hint of youthfulness to her singing but that's the only hint of girlishness here; her writing and she had a hand in penning all 13 tracks here, with six of them bearing her solitary credit is sharply, subtly crafted and the music is softly assured, never pushing its hooks too hard and settling into a warm bed of guitars and keyboards. Like many country-pop albums of the 2000s, the pop heavily outweighs the country there aren't fiddles here, there are violins yet Fearless never feels garish, a crass attempt at a crossover success. It's small-scale and sweetly tuneful, always seeming humble even when the power ballads build to a big close. Swift's gentle touch is as enduring as her songcraft, and this musical maturity may not quite jibe with her age but it does help make Fearless one of the best mainstream pop albums of 2008.

Sarah Slean returns with new album “The Baroness”, 12 new songs and the long awaited follow up to “Day One”. “Hopeful Hearts” opens with guitars however not pianos although they do join the foray later in the song. Immediately you realise the production and instrumentation of her earlier work is back. There’s no electronic blips and drum loops this time. The opener sounds tragic and dramatic. “Get Home” is a piano led ballad that is soft and warm at the same time with the string arrangments and Sarah’s soaring vocals making it great. “Euphoria” isn’t quite as bouncy as the title suggests but it definitely has rhythm but once again it’s defiantly softer than say “Bank Accounts” although it’s very catchy. “Goodnight Trouble” is very jazz cabaret in places albeit very heartfelt with some brass adding more layers to the sound pallet. “Notes From The Underground” again shows acoustic guitar, piano and vocals all in harmony with a beautiful chorus. “Sound of Water/ Change Your Mind” brings a nice change of pace and tone with a rich dark fast paced track which is a real highlight of the album. In contrast “No Place At All” is a quiet, slow ballad sounding like something Vienna Teng would do. “Please Be Good To Me”sounds dreamy but also like a classic 150 year old folk song too. Very beautiful, very familiar. “Willow” follows the same pattern while “So Many Miles” is a nice up-tempo song that could quite easily find regular airplay. “Shadowland” is a very downbeat track that stands out due to the whispering male voice in the background and the eerie organ playing. The album closes with “Looking For Someone” a beautiful, almost gospel-like piano/vocal track. This album will be a grower. I’ve played it just the once and I believe the tight, clean, samey production from song to song doesn’t let each song shine but the melodies are there and Sarah’s vocal/musical talent has defiantly not gone away. It just may take a few plays to notice each track individually.

Even as the smooth jazz format has grown over the past ten years, its annals are unfortunately littered with many artists whose promise fell victim to poor promotion, folding labels, and unending label limbo. While many (i.e. Chris Boardman, Gary Herbig, Bill Bergman) seemed to give up the fight to focus on more lucrative side endeavors, Thom Rotella - who faced six years of this musical purgatory after three hit albums on DMP from 1987 to 1990, chose to struggle through the bleak period of turn-downs from seemingly every label in the genre. The title of his comeback album, Can't Stop reflects this brazen spirit in the face of all those rejection letters. But Rotella realized that the type of lightweight acoustic guitar music that launched his career was no longer en vogue and might not stand out among the competition in 1997; to get back in the game, he needed more substance, more grit. While Rotella fans from way back might think the crackling, electric Wes Montgomery-flavored licks on Can't Stop are a departure, the guitarist is simply reverting back to the style he intended to begin his solo career with all along. It's notable not only for Rotella's thicker production values and bolder sense of improvisation, but also for the pointed conversations he has with the horns of Rick Braun (trumpet and flugelhorn) and Gerald Albright (sax); none of his old albums had sax embellishment at all. On "Belly Up," he textures Land Richards' live drums with shuffling loops, blending his own fluid electric lines with a wah-wah guitar track, and weaving Albright's tenor through a veil of appearing, then disappearing bluesy keyboard lines by Jim Studer. On the feisty title track, Rotella starts with a groove foundation of Richards, percussionist Vail Johnson and percussionist Arno Lucas. Above this, Rotella's fluid lines gallop along, each verse culminating in a dual flourish of muted trumpet and guitar; Braun takes a solo, and then backs off so Rotella can wail away. ~ Review by Jonathan Widran ~

With a release coming only two months after Crusade, The Blues Alone, the first Mayall "solo" album (i.e. without The Bluesbreakers), was John Mayall's third album of 1967, or fourth, if you count the various artists compilation Raw Blues. Like Raw Blues, it was released initially on Decca's discount Ace of Clubs label to distinguish it from a regular Mayall album, although the distinction has been lost over time. It was actually recorded prior to Crusade on May 1, 1967. Mayall played and overdubbed all instruments except drums, which were handled by Bluesbreaker Keef Hartley, which was one way of dealing with his ongoing personnel difficulties (by this time, his bassist, John McVie, had left to join Fleetwood Mac). It also served notice that, despite his band being a spawning ground for several British stars by now, the real star of the group was its leader. But it didn't quite prove that, since Mayall, while certainly competent on harmonica, keyboards, and guitars, doesn't display the flair of an Eric Clapton or Peter Green, and the overdubbing, as is so often the case, robs the recording of any real sense of interplay. The group's a quintet featuring Sonny Fortune on alto, Billy Harper on tenor, Stanley Cowell on piano, Billy Hart on drums, and Reggie Workman on bass -- most of whom, minus Fortune, played together on a similar session (called Such Great Friends -- not to be confused with this one!) a few years earlier. The feel of the album's like some of Harper's best from the 70s -- very open, but never too free, with lots of stretching, yearning passages from the rhythm section -- making for a perfect platform for the solos of Harper and Fortune. Titles include "Equipoise", "East Harlem Nostalgia", "Insight", "Awakening", and "Is It Not True Simply Because You Cannot Believe It".

Choose both.To Ella With Love finds Callaway, who made her name as a cabaret singer in spots like Manhattan's Algonquin Hotel and as the composer/performer of the theme from TV's The Nanny, paying homage to one of the greatest performers in the history of vocal jazz. While Callaway doesn't hesitate to dive into the heart of the Fitzgerald songbook, taking on such signature tunes as "Body And Soul" and "Lady Be Good," she avoids the obvious traps of imitation, adapting the material to her own passionate interpretations and considerable range. There are hints of Ella in some of the phrasing, which is almost inevitable, but these versions stand on their own. This would be a great album if Ella Fitzgerald had never heard this material. Callaway is accompanied by f 15 piece big band, a string section and an A-List rhythm section that features Cyrus Chestnut (piano), Christian McBride (bass) and Lewis Nash (drums). Wynton Marsalis sits in and offers fine solos on "Do Nothin' Till You Hear From Me" and "How High The Moon."

Review by Joe Viglione Breaking All the Rules is a good, solid effort by Peter Frampton which would have been better had he decided to break a few rules. The problem here is that Frampton is treading water, in familiar territory, singing and playing within the confines of a well constructed safe record. There is a brilliant hook in "Going to L.A." which might have been a hit had co-producer David Kershenbaum given it a little of what he would inject into Tracy Chapman seven years after this. A strong vocal from Frampton as well as a strong performance, but a failure to do what his last three albums did: generate a Top 20 hit! Billy & Bobby Alessi's "Rise Up" is in the pocket, one of the album's highlights, though it tends to sound like John Cougar's 1979 chart climber "I Need a Lover," chock full of the sound from that record and a little out of place here. Vanda and Young's eternal "Friday on My Mind" is decent, certainly better than Alice Cooper guitarist Michael Bruce's version, but not typical of Peter Frampton's repertoire and almost unnecessary. The production on this Easybeats cover is noticeably thinner than the rest of the disc. Bostonian David Finnerty's "I Don't Wanna Let You Go" shows up here, but it doesn't have the snap of his 1975 hit, "Let's Live Together," and sounds as labored as the Joneses, that author's 1980s band on Atlantic. "Lost a Part of You" is a worthy album track sequel to "I'm in You," Frampton's biggest hit, but is more laid-back in performance. There are some clever riffs that help make "You Kill Me" and the title tune interesting. "Breaking All the Rules," in particular, has a Sabbath-inspired fuzz guitar line from the Rolling Stones' "Bitch." Where he does break the rules is that Procol Harum lyricist Keith Reid writes the words on this title number, despite some of Frampton's best lyrics appearing on his own compositions. Steve Lukather and Jeff Porcaro provide guitar and drums as part of a more than competent band on an equally competent recording. Making a good record was not what was required of Peter Frampton at this point in time, he had to come back with something spectacular. Breaking All the Rules is hampered by its creator's position in the rock hierarchy, but shouldn't be overlooked because of that.

Part pop, part post-punk, part poet for the disillusioned under the Thatcher regime, Matt Johnson's The The were an uncompromising collective who defied simple pigeonholing. 'Soul Mining' is perhaps Johnson's most accessible work, helped in no small part by the commercial appeal of verse-chorus songs like 'Perfect', 'This Is The Day' (aided by both accordion and flute) and 'Uncertain Smile' which - featuring a glorious piano coda - contains Jools Holland's most valuable contribution to a piece of music. Otherwise the remainder of the album ripples with menace and tension; as Johnson broods and snarls his way through diatribes of self-doubt ("How can anyone know me, when I don't even know myself") and thinly-veiled attacks on the powers that be ("I'm just a symptom of the moral decay that's gnawing at the heart of the country"). As outstanding musically as it is angry, 'Soul Mining' is a landmark 80's album.

In all, then, a set that demands to be taken very seriously by anyone who loves Beethoven or thinks he knows and understands these very familiar pieces. These performances are not the last word on period-style Beethoven concertos, but they are a pretty impressive first word—well thought out and executed by both Lubin and Hogwood, with some spirited and sensitive orchestral playing and a generally high standard of ensemble, and excellently recorded too, with a well managed solo/orchestra balance—different from what you may be used to in Beethoven concertos, but perhaps closer to what Beethoven heard in his imagination than anything recorded before.'

The music is melodic, sometimes funky, and enjoyable if not essential, but all of Joe Farrell's CTI sets are worth acquiring.

This one is a bit unusual since the trumpeter is accompanied by David Friedman (on vibes and marimba), bassist Buster Williams and drummer Joe Chambers. The music (which includes two takes of "Syzgies/3+1=5" on the re-issue Enja ENJ 1021) is somewhat challenging ("The Song Is You" is the only standard) and it inspires Baker to come up with some lyrical statements. There are many Chet Baker recordings from his final decade and his true fans will want to pick up this one. - AMG

Sometimes there's simply too much good material for a single disc, and then a decision has to be made: release a double-disc set, or two single-discs, spread apart and each with its own complexion? In the case of saxophonist David Liebman's European group with Italians Roberto Tarenzi (piano), Paolo Bendettini (bass) and Tony Arco (drums), choosing the latter not only helps bring more attention over a lenghtier period of time but, despite being culled from the same three dates in late 2005, also focuses on slightly different aspects of the group.

Dream of Nite (Verve, 2007) was largely about original compositions from the group members (with one cover), also weighing in heavily on Liebman's soprano playing. Negative Space is a more equitable mix of Liebman's soprano and tenor, also placing greater emphasis on his writing, with the saxophonist contributing three of its five tunes and a contemporary re-harmonization of the Bernier/Simon classic, "Poinciana." The set-closer, a barnstorming group take of Mongo Santamaria's "Afro Blue"—originally popularized by John Coltrane— demonstrates how indebted Liebman is to the late saxophone icon, while also making clear how he's evolved that debt into something far more personal.

Unsurprisingly, like Dream of Nite, Negative Space sits comfortably in the mainstream, but proves that the tradition has by no means reached a position of complacency. Liebman's "G.I.G." refers to the late, great songwriting team, George and Ira Gershwin, and swings along at an amiable pace, leaving plenty of space for Tarenzi to build an impressive and lengthy solo of motivic invention before Liebman takes over on tenor, combining his own attention to thematic development with the visceral expressionism that's become an ever-present signature. This is timeless music that would have fit comfortably at the 1978 Village Vanguard date which resulted in Liebman's Mosaic Select 32: Pendulum Live at the Village Vanguard (Mosaic, 2008), and yet in the group's expanded harmonies, notably Tarenzi's accompaniment on Liebman's paradoxically ethereal yet grounded title track, there's an unmistakably modern air to the entire set.

Despite there being more soprano saxophonists on the scene today, few have evolved as instantly recognizable a voice as Liebman. In the company of Tarenzi, Benedittini and Arco—who've clearly spent considerable time working together as a trio—Liebman has the same kind of freedom to explore, within some defined parameters, as he has with American groups including the recently reformed Quest, heard on Redemption - Quest Live in Europe (Hatology, 2007). His exciting duet with Arco, following the drummer's well-constructed building-from- nothing solo at the beginning of Liebman's burning "Get Me Back to the Apple," is a perfect confluence of bebop sensibility and stream-of-consciousness free play.

In July 1956, Miles Davis returned to his hometown for a two-night stint at the infamous Peacock Alley in Gaslight Square. Along for the ride, were four more of the greatest jazz musicians ever, especially when taken as a whole. Nearly fifty years later, the gaslights are gone and Saint Louis locals still don't know what hit them.

Peacock Alley 1956 is a CD reissue of the original AM radio broadcast. Never heard of it? That’s due to ambiguous legal concerns. Miles signed exclusive contracts, making widespread marketing of such “bootlegs” impossible. Bottom line: few such treasures exist, here's your chance to own one.

These rough live recordings document Miles' amazing first quintet (Red Garland, John Coltrane, Philly Joe Jones, and Paul Chambers) on a formative tour. This new band hadn’t even recorded most of these songs yet (“Ah-leu-cha” and “All of You” would soon appear on the breakthrough Round About Midnight). SILVER'S BLUE is one of pianist, composer, and bandleader Horace Silver's finest albums. Released in 1956, and featuring fellow Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers alums Donald Byrd (trumpet) and Hank Mobley (saxophone), it comes across as the very quintessence of mid-'50s hard bop. Silver's three originals shine, as does the band's take on "How Long Has This Been Going On?" The whole album crosses a bluesy, soulful, and groove-oriented feel with the rhythmic and harmonic sophistication of vanguard bop. Silver's masterpiece is 1964's SONG FOR MY FATHER, but newcomers could do worse than to start with this gem.

AMG:
Two sessions in the mid-'50s produced the material for this album, which despite or perhaps because of being one of the historical early recordings of the Horace Silver Quintet, was later treated to a confusing mess of reissues, some of which never really mentioned what was so historic about the material in the first place. Maybe there was no reason to, since by the new millennium the type of groovy, funky jazz Silver was famous for had become so in demand that any recording of the authentic item was considered coated with golden fairy dust. In the late '80s, when this particular imprint was released on the public, just the fact that it was a reissue of something old seemed to be enough. The liner notes begin with a pretentious description of the lengths to which the geniuses who remastered this went, in order to not only preserve the integrity of the original tapes but to bring them up to the standards of the era. Which everyone knows were no standards and, anyway, these tapes sounded fantastic in the first place.

First off, the liner notes should have said, "Listen to Hank Mobley." The tenor saxophonist is the first to solo on the title track, and what a beautiful improvisation it is, always centered around the blues but twisting through some melodic turns of phrases that reference folk songs and who knows what else. Besides the pianist, who is in his usual tasty form, it is Mobley who makes this album really breathe, as neither trumpeter will really knock one's socks off. Joe Gordon is a bit undersung, true, but he also has a pinched sound in the upper register and a habit of noodling his way from change to change as if he felt inspiration was just around the corner. For the second session he is replaced by Donald Byrd, who has his moments despite relying on stock phrases at times when the intensity of his solo is just building up. The arrangement of "How Long Has This Been Going On?" is refreshingly quiet and gentle, showing that Silver had more than one direction and bringing forth another type of tone from Mobley, all velvet and feathers. Songwriter Frank Loesser's "I'll Know" is also given a bright, catchy arrangement. The theme is stated in a series of slowly unfolding pronouncements building up to a great moment right before the solos start, when a strong medium-tempo groove comes in. On his solo, the pianist lays out his notes like a casino dealer providing cards all around to all the players, following blues licks with rapid chromatic bop devilments. The original "Shoutin' Out" is the kind of stuff Silver is really known for, and it is fantastic. The fine drummer Kenny Clarke, who always played well with Silver, is on hand throughout, and two excellent bassists alternate, Doug Watkins and Art Taylor. Neither man was capable of playing a wasted note.

This session headed by trumpeter Lee Morgan was not initially released until this 1998 CD. Morgan is joined by an all-star cast of James Spaulding on flute and alto, tenor saxophonist Wayne Shorter, baritonist Pepper Adams, pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Ron Carter and drummer Mickey Roker, but the music overall is not all that memorable. Most of the selections, although allegedly "standards," were of more recent vintage (like "A Lot of Livin' to Do" and "If I Were a Carpenter"), and even if Morgan and the other musicians play well, nothing too exciting occurs. Although not a dud, it was not a major loss that this recording stayed in the vaults.

One year after the succes of volume 1, Cool d:vision releases Volume II of this collection dedicated to jazz's new influenses. 14 tracks selected amongst the best local and international productions of a jazz that can be defined as contaminated by electronic and other music genres, like swing, samba, house and nu-bossa.

In this period, more than ever, we are seeing and hearing the creation of new styles and music trends influenced by jazz. A melting pot that is changing tastes, habits and fashions of the new generations.

Jazz No Jazz wants to bring into evidence these evolutions. It collects, following the usual Cool d:vision style, some of the well-known exponents of these new musical frontiers, real sound innovators such as Vikter Duplaix, the French Metropolitan Jazz Affair and Klément Julienne, Povo from Scandinavia, the American Don Cunningham, the German Motorcitysoul, The Funky Lowlives (they remix a perl of the great Dizzy Gillespie), and more: Ben Mono and [re:jazz] (here revisted by the Japanese Yukihiro Fukutomi), the English Nathan Haines and Bah Samba, our local Nicola Conte (he remixes a track of Fuzz Against Junk) and many others. The CD opens to a pleasant sequence of tracks with an alive beat and dynamic atmosphere. It moves to a central moment highlighting sophisticated tracks that create ambience, and shifts towards the grand finale with a series of extra-smooth-jazz tracks, elegant and refined, leading into a soft atmosphere, which adapts to moments of pure and relaxing escape.

The last track is the very beautiful De Luz é Você by the Milanece jazz players Rinaldo Donati who has just signed with Cool d:vision. An extraordinary contribution, and an anticipation of his forthcoming album Casa Brasil in which Donati, musicologist, guitar player, and composer with more than fifteen years of artistic activity, expresses his Brazilian vein in an elegantly jazzed language.
All this comes packaged in a luxury, glossy didibox with a captivating graphics. A collection to be listened to, to be collected, to be given as a gift, to be loved, to be consumed, to dedicate to the most delicate palates That won't struggle in recognising a product of absolute musical prominence.

Remember The Judds from the mid-80’s…the Dixie Chicks from the late-90’s…the Wilkinsons and their '26 Cents' debut in 1999??

Well…there’s somebody new coming on board in 2008 who will make you forget about all of those memorable debuts. The Higgins, a family trio comprised of sisters, Eileen and Kathleen, and their guitar-pickin’ brother John, have released their debut album, appropriately entitled Real Thing, and it's loaded with exactly that - the real thang !! The Higgins harmonize in that preternatural way only siblings can, and the music is jaunty. The exception is 'Factory Girl', an a cappella tour de force that recalls some of Alison Krauss’s stellar work for “O Brother, Where Art Thou?”- it’s THAT good.

The lead single, 'Flower Child' has already introduced The Higgins to country radio from coast to coast in Canada…such an auspicious debut that the single and the supporting video have hit the top of their respective charts.

The Real Thing album is simply loaded with robust, acoustic-flavoured material, most of it originally created by all three siblings. They have a hand in co-writing all but four of the selections on their debut offering, and the ‘imported’ tunes are perfectly suited to the musical mystique that The Higgins deliver. Ironically, the album’s title track, 'Real Thing' is one of the tunes from outside sources, in this case a collaboration by Canadian writers Deric Ruttan (of Dierks Bentley fame) and Chris Thorsteinson and Dave Wasyliw, co-founders of Canadian group Doc Walker. The song was a “no brainer” when it came to deciding a title for the album…just the perfect story…the perfect hook.

Other tunes from the album that will solicit immediate reaction include a bouncy, 'Sounds Of Summer'; the crusty, '16 Going On 30', a zesty, 'Second Hand Car', and winners like 'I Got No Time', 'Wild Horse' and 'My Way Of Thinking'.

To put an exclamation mark on The Higgins’ sound, and the strength of their album, one only has to listen to their cover version of 'Rhythm Guitar', a tune they have borrowed from Emmylou Harris’ 1985, Ballad Of Sally Rose Lp. The excitement from the voices of Eileen, Kathleen and John on this particular number alone is raw and penetrating…and could easily be the ‘sleeper’ item on their record.

It's not very often that a musician with a lifetime of experience and success gets to be rediscovered by both the public and himself...but that's the case with the John Oates solo project, "Phunk Shui". After 30 years as a professional recording artist, John finally made his first CD without his longtime partner, Daryl Hall. It's ironic that after waiting all this time, it took less than a month to pick the songs, find a label, put a band together, record and mix the entire project.

The songs are a well-crafted collection of sure to be pop classics many written in collaboration with writers such as Keith Follese, Jed Leiber, Arthur Baker, and Steve Postell. Then there is the killer band: Steve Holley on drums, Tom "T-Bone" Wolk on bass, Jed Leiber on keyboards and of course, John on guitar.

The sound is a blend of 70's inspired funk and acoustic soul. Listening to Phunk Shui is like having an old friend over for dinner, and then after eating, he pulls out his guitar and sings for you. You know you have heard this guy sing before, but just maybe never realized how much depth there was to the man.

America fully recovered from Hat Trick's dismal results with 1974's Holiday, with producer George Martin's influence rubbing off on both of the album's Top Five singles. With "Tin Man"'s wonderfully polished soft pop ease and the wispiness of "Lonely People," the band was able to recapture the same formula that put early hits like "A Horse with No Name," "I Need You," and "Ventura Highway" in the Top Ten.
The difference with "Holiday" is that their light and breezy melodies and attractive folk-rock sound filtered through more than just the two hit tracks on the album. "Another Try," "Old Man Took," "In the Country," and even the cliché-sounding "Baby It's Up to You" contain a sturdy enough mixture of guitar and harmony to rise them above inessential filler, at least as far as America's material is concerned. Cuts like "Mad Dog" and "Hollywood" suffer somewhat from trite lyrics and a seemingly hurried compositional formula, but this album as a whole ascertained that the group was definitely showing their true potential once more. The album that followed Holiday, 1975's Hearts, showed even stronger improvement, taking the overly catchy "Sister Golden Hair" to number one and scoring a Top 20 hit with the Sunday morning frailty of "Daisy Jane."

Carlos’ collaboration with John McLaughlin was followed by another “solo” album one year later with John Coltrane’s widow “Turiya” Alice, a Sri Chinmoy follower like “Mahavishnu”. Carlos’ spiritual formation continued, and the solo projects were the main musical domain of experimentation to give expression to his spiritual experiences. Carlos became more and more concerned with music that expresses the “everlasting”, as he called it himself, that is “cooked by the essence of spirituality”. In 1974, Carlos was inspired by Indian and Brazilian music for his solo album Illuminations and Borboletta with the band later that year, respectively. As on Carlos’ previous solo album Love Devotion Surrender, Illuminations was the result of a collaboration between several members of the Santana band and jazz musicians. Beside keyboardist Tom Coster and percussionist Armando Peraza, Illuminations features Jules Broussard on sax, Alice Coltrane on harp and keyboard, David Holland on bass, Jack DeJohnette on drums (both veterans of the Miles Davis electric bands), Phil Ford on tabla and Phil Browne added some tamboura drone. The resulting album consists of five tracks, which, apart from the short opening track Guru Sri Chinmoy Aphorism, is entirely instrumental. The compositions on Illuminations are almost all from Santana and Coster, with the exception of the track Bliss: The Eternal Now, which is composed by Alice Coltrane. The musical approach has changed considerably since Carlos’ previous collaborative work. The fast runs that characterize Love Devotion Surrender now make space for long, sustained one-note riffs, a shift that is also evident on the band’s album Borboletta. It typifies Carlos’ changing musical approach, which was becoming more direct and explicit in terms of spirituality. Carlos’ albums gradually seem to cover a path of growing spiritual independence. From the teachings of Sri Chinmoy it seems that Carlos is developing a view of his own. This becomes more evident on the subsequent album Borboletta, with Christian sounding songs like Life Is Anew. Illuminations may be conceived of as an ode to life and its creation. A part of the scatters of words in the Sri Chinmoy Aphorism seems to be pointing at the “breath of life”. The album then proceeds with Angel of Air, which opens with a beautiful haunting flute solo played by Jules Broussard. Although almost all compositions are from Santana and Coster, it is striking to see that the drum section is strongly represented only on Angel of Sunlight, while on the rest of the album there is merely space for Jack DeJohnette’s cymbals on Angel of Air. Bassist David Holland has a very prominent role, and is a driving force for Carlos’ lead guitar work, Jules Broussard’s soprano sax and Alice Coltrane’s harp. The bass intro on Angel of Air is very similar to the one on Eternal Caravan of Reincarnation on the album Caravanserai. When the music swells, it is realized by Jules Broussard’s soprano sax, backed by an 18-piece classical string section that was charted for every track except Angel of Sunlight. Carlos also adds wind chimes, which vanish when the track flows almost unnoticeably into Angel of Water. Alice Coltrane’s composition Bliss: The Eternal Now has the same kind of arrangement as the previous tracks, but here we find only Alice Coltrane, on acoustic piano and harp, and Carlos playing, backed by the orchestra. Carlos plays some fine jazz chops at the beginning of the track, which are reminiscent of his collaborations with John McLaughlin. His playing fits well with the string orchestra and Alice’s trademark harp. Her composition became one of the hallmarks of this historically important album. The fourth track, Angel of Sunlight, is the most distinctive track of the album, both in length and music performed. This 15-minute long track has elements of Indian music, most notably during the first four minutes with Carlos’ Eastern flavored guitar play fitting magnificently with Phil Ford’s tabla. The music then gradually transforms and intensifies, moving from the eastern atmosphere into more conventional jazz territory. Jules Broussard on soprano sax takes over from Carlos and Armando Peraza takes over from tabla and plays an outstanding conga solo for more than 10 minutes, which blends beautifully with Jack DeJohnette’s drumming. In the final third part Carlos comes back to the front after Broussard’s sax solo, which brings back the eastern atmosphere. This is one of the most accomplished Santana compositions up to date. The album ends with the title track Illuminations, a composition similar to the second and third track. Illuminations is, without doubt, Carlos’ most experimental and unorthodox album. At first, the music is difficult to access and understand, which must have left his fans wondering about his current and future direction. It can only be understood within the context of Carlos’ spiritual evolution. The album is an important stage in the musical offerings of that period, an era that eventually came to an end with the release of the band’s album Borboletta in October 1974. Here we may find Santana at their peak, where Carlos’ spiritual growth towards a more independent view and the ecstatic, cohesive mastery of the music played live on Lotus are combined to deliver some of the finest and most refined fusion of Latin, rock, funk, jazz and gospel. Illuminations is an indispensable album, especially for Santana fans, to understand Carlos’ musical development. It may sound uncommon, but make no mistake: it has beautiful moments, and Angel of Sunlight is one of Santana’s best compositions.
