| ? | This is a REAL KEEPER. One of the Blue Note magical "All Star"recordings. Pete La Roca led the date, but it could have been any of the "Quartet which doesn't seem like a Quartet". These gentlemen are painting with a huge tonal canvas with broad, bold strokes. Joe Henderson is on tenor sax, Steve Kuhn on piano, Steve Swallow on bass, and Pete on drums. From the beginning bars of the recording to the end, this magical journey will knock your socks off. The best of the best, "Pieces D'Resistance", begin with "Malaguena", a swirling, whirling piece of jazz mastery led off by Joe Henderson in the starring role of Matador, with Steve Kuhn as the Bull, and LaRoca and Swallow providing a restless beat for both. It's a masterful performance that grabs you from the first note of Kuhn's recurring ten note figure over the churning beat. And in comes Joe for a Tour de Force solo which is modal, freeing him up to soar over the normal chord changes. Kuhn follows with his own Tour de Force solo. If you are familiar with the incredible CD "Three Waves", the trio effort by this very same rhythm section, you already know that Kuhn is capable of bringing down huge amounts of thunder and lightning during his piano solos with LaRoca and Swallow providing hurricane gales and torrential rain. Kuhn's solo builds to a crescendo that is amazing, with LaRoca relentlessly pouring on the heat. And back comes Joe to sustain this intensity to the fadeout. "Malaguena" is simply a thing of tremendous beauty and intensity and is NOT TO BE MISSED by any jazz fan. A "Performance For The Ages"!! But things are just getting started. "Candu" is a wild and wicked blues, hitting on all cylinders. The beautiful, sizzling "Tears Come From Heaven" is written by Pete and was last heard on the Art Farmer CD, "Sing Me Softly of the Blues", with this very same rhythm section backing Art. Joe and Steve get off another great solo each, but Pete comes to the fore to solo and he is blazing. The title track "Basra", written by Pete, has Swallow providing a hip, mysterious, Middle-eastern flavor to the track with his fat tone and reverberations that were virtually unheard on the original vinyl LP, and the other three contributing yearning solos about the legendary Iraqi port city. A beautiful, pastoral reading of "Lazy Afternoon" and Swallow's gently bopping "Eiderdown" round out this tremendous CD. This is an Essential Recording that will reward you for decades to come, revealing hidden jewels each time. Messrs. Henderson, Kuhn, Swallow, and leader La Roca have outdone themselves. Sean Costello learned guitar at the age of 9?taught himself. That is more than I can say about myself as I now struggle through the second year of ?teaching myself? just a little guitar. But the style of blues that Sean Costello sings and plays cannot be taught. That?s a natural. With a deep, throat-growling blues voice, Costello has produced several albums of blues that began with his hard-won production of Call the Cops, his follow-up of Cuttin? In (2000), Moanin? for Molasses (2002), Sean Costello (2005), and his latest We Can Live Together. All of these albums have a connection to the time-tested blues of Chicago and New Orleans, complete with funk and some soul.
We Can Get Together begins with a funky blues piece that smokes out of the gate, Johnny Winter-style. The song, ?Anytime You Want? joins ten good, solid tunes. Of all of the songs on this album, Costello wrote nine of them. The album is wrapped by two traditional blues including a song taught him by Levon Helm (The Band), who had learned it from his parents, ?Little Birds.?
The swamp-blues of ?Same Old Game,? the soulful ?Can?t Let Go? and gospel/soul flavour of ?You Told Me a Lie? are variations that seem to produce effortlessly for Costello. The best song on the album is the rockin? ?Hard Luck Woman,? which is like traditionally-styled Johnny Winter blues, as is ?How in the Devil.?
Fans of the blues style will thoroughly enjoy these bluesy tunes as interpreted and dispensed by Sean Costello. He?ll help carry the torch into this millennium to preserve the very roots of Rock ?n? Roll. With serious interest beginning to be paid to this kind of music (think Amy Winehouse), perhaps we?ll see a strong roots resurgence of the genre and thus revitalize our heritage and, more importantly, good ole Rock ?n? Roll.
Thorogood has some serious competition in Sean Costello. You?re going to be pleased with We Can Get Together. There?s not a bad song on the album.

Originally from Pennsylvania where he was first known for his energetic guest appearances with many of the area?s finest performers, Eric?s early musical influences inspired him to pick up his first Fender Stratocaster at the age of nine. There was no looking back????.
Eric?s passion for the Blues enabled him to eventually share the stage with many nationally known artists including Bob Margolin, Debbie Davies, James Armstrong, Steve Guyger, Kenny Neal, Chris Beard, Tommy Castro, Joe Kubek, Solomon Burke, Ronnie Baker Brooks and Hubert Sumlin.
With a feeling and natural ability that just can?t be explained for someone so young, Eric delivers a Freddie-BB-Albert King influenced performance with an intensity and skill that belies his youth. With a style at times reminiscent of the great ones, Eric combines a variety of influences while reminding everyone the real thing comes from the heart and soul.
The Eric Steckel Band?s debut CD, ?A Few Degrees Warmer?, was recorded live in April 2002 when Eric was a mere 11 years old. ?A Few Degrees? quickly became a CD Baby Top Blues Seller and the record continues to delight Blues Guitar fans across the globe.
In follow-up to ?A Few Degrees?, the ESB released a studio record titled ?High Action? in 2004 which is also available through CD Baby.
In addition to developing their own faithful following over the past five years through many regular club gigs and festival appearances, the ESB has enjoyed the opportunity to open for Marcia Ball, Tommy Castro, Shemekia Copeland, and B.B. King. The ESB also had the honor to open for Johnny Winter in Amsterdam as part of their second European Tour!
In the Summer of 2004, Eric appeared in Sweden, Norway and Denmark as a special guest with John Mayall and The Bluesbreakers during their Scandinavian Tour. Mayall was so impressed with Eric?s performance during the tour that he asked Eric to join the Bluesbreakers in the studio as a special guest guitarist on the ?Road Dogs? record. Listen for Eric?s lead guitar work on the track ?Chaos in the Neighborhood?.
Eric now resides in Jacksonville, Florida where was introduced to Duane Trucks who joined the band in late 2005 as their regular drummer. Music fans will immediately recognize Duane as the brother of Derek Trucks and the nephew of the legendary Allman Brothers drummer Butch Trucks. At only 18 years old, Duane is already an extremely talented musician in his own right.
In celebration of Duane?s arrival, the ESB released their third record, ?Havana?. Arguably their best work to date, ?Havana? captures the essence of the band. Deeply rooted in the Blues, their performance recalls the sound of the 60s and 70s Blues Rock era.

Tomato Delta Blues gathers 16 of the label?s best-known performers, including Howlin? Wolf, Lightnin? Slim, John Lee Hooker, and Brownie McGhee. While a fair amount of the collection isn?t technically Delta blues, the songs that are, such as Arthur ?Big Boy? Crudup?s ?That?s All Right,? Mississippi John Hurt?s ?Talking Casey,? and Johnny Shines? ?Trouble?s All I See? are some of the genre?s finest examples. Though the compilation strays a bit beyond the confines of its title, it still manages to collect strong contributions from Lightnin? Hopkins, Sonny Terry, Little Walter, Leadbelly, and Otis Rush. While it would?ve been nice to see artists like Robert Johnson, Son House, Charley Patton, or Tommy Johnson inculded here, Tomato Delta Blues does a fair job of offering a sample of Delta blues, as well as other blues styles.

America outsources everything else ? why not country music? Like Neil Young, Robbie Robertson and Shania Twain, Kathleen Edwards is a Canadian who crafts music that?s often more ?American?-tasting than domestic brands. But she?s not fronting. On her strongest album yet, she sets a poignant road tale between New York and Ontario (?Buffalo?) and pens a fierce, Crazy Horse-ish squall about crack, murder and racism in her own back yard (?O Canada?).
The hottest border-crossing tune, though, is ?Oil Man?s War,? a cascading-piano story-song about two kids, Bobby and Annabel, that conflates Vietnam-era draft-dodging with modern geopolitics. Obviously, it isn?t likely to woo Nashville radio. Neither is ?The Cheapest Key,? a harmonica-charged heartland rocker whose alphabetized first verse declares, ?B is for bullshit.? Too bad for Edwards, who surely knows that the image of Annabel?s hand on Bobby?s thigh while they break north deserves to outlive all the pap on the current country countdown.

The show is blistering from start to finish. Excellent performances of the songs, especially London Calling and The Magnificent Seven. Ivan Meets G.I. Joe is particularly faithful to the studio version as well and you?ll notice the drumming becomes a tad weaker as Topper diverts his efforts to singing and remembering the lyrics! The Guns Of Brixton is a truly excellent version. Police & Thieves deserves a mention - there?s a bit of a pause before it kicks in ?Yeah this is Police & Thieves? - and Charlie Don?t Surf is one of the best live versions. The band seem to struggle a bit performing Broadway, but a great version can be found on the London Lyceum 1981 show. In total there are eleven tracks from Sandinista!, which is nearly half the set, and what with the addition of Radio Clash - again perhaps the best live performance of this song - it leaves little room for older material. Never fear though, because White Man is in there and is excellent (though there is a slight glitch in the recording 1 minute 38 seconds in) and the traditional near the end track Janie Jones is another excellent performance. Complete Control is the exact same version as that which appeared on the official live album - they also get the date wrong in the inner notes saying it was June 13th. A great performance, one of the best of this great song.
Recorded on 4 October 1981 in Tokyo, ?Miles! Miles! Miles!? was a double-disc set not released until 1996 in Japan. It is a record of Miles?s comeback concerts and is notable for featuring the unedited version of ?Jean-Pierre? which appears on ?We Want Miles?. Miles was very sick on this tour and not at his best, but the rest of the band rally around. Miles, trumpet, keyboard; Mike Stern, guitar, Bill Evans, sax; Marcus Miller, bass, Al Foster, drums; Mino Cinelu, percussion.
Due to quirks in copyright laws, a number of official and semi-official live albums have been released in Europe. One of those releases is the single-disc ?Fat Time?.
[Note: ?Fat Time? was Mike Stern?s nickname given to him by Miles when he was in the band in the early 80?s.]

Bossa Antigua picks up the samba-based rim shots of drummer Connie Kay on Take Ten and tries to make a whole new record out of them. While the title track duplicates the original percolating groove of ?El Prince,? other tracks like ?Samba Cantina? revert to a typical bossa nova rhythm of the period, which leads one to conclude that ?bossa antigua? is merely whatever Desmond says it is. Of the album?s two non-originals, ?The Night Has a Thousand Eyes,? of course, is made-to-order for Desmond?s wistful, sophisticated temperament, and he delivers exactly what a Desmond devotee would expect and love; and ?A Ship Without a Sail? has some memorable off-the-cuff solo ideas. Jim Hall is around again to lend subtle rhythm support and low-key savvy in his solos, and like many Desmond companions of this period, he makes a fine sparring partner in the contrapuntal exchanges. The Brubeck Quartet?s Gene Wright again lends a sturdy hand on bass. The playing is wonderful throughout, though just missing the full-throttle inspiration of Take Ten.

It?s me, Paul Desmond, rapidly aging sax player with the Brubeck Quartet, sometimes called the John P. Marquand of the alto, and again playing hookey from the mother lode with the same group of sturdy compatriots that made TAKE TEN such a joy to record. On bass is the jovial presence of Eugene Wright, without whom the entire Brubeck operation would grind to a halt in a matter of hours. On drums, the master time-keeper of the Modern Jazz Quartet, Connie Kay ? who, if he didn?t exist, would be much too perfect ever to be imagined by anyone. And on guitar, the redoubtable (that means the first time you hear it you don?t believe it, and when you hear it again later you still don?t believe it) Jim Hall.
The term bossa antigua (it means, or at least it should, ?old thing,? as opposed to ?new thing?) began as a slightly rueful play on words because by the time I got around to doing a few bossa nova tunes on TAKE TEN it was several years after the first flash from Brazil and couldn?t properly be called a new thing any more. This album carries the term a step further, in that the rhythm on several tracks is a sort of skeletal bossa nova with various old-timey flavors added. ALIANCA, for instance, has Jim Hall functioning as the only accredited Brazilian delegate, accompanied by routinely impeccable Connie Kay shtick and a nice comfortable New York 2 from Eugene Wright. A SHIP WITHOUT A SAIL and THE NIGHT HAS A THOUSAND EYES contain other variations, ranging from Early Calumet City Strip to a subliminal fraelich. (If any of you feel creative out there, you could get together some rainy night and figure out an Old Thing dance to go along.)
The tunes, except for SHIP and NIGHT, are mostly originals. O GATO was written by Jim Hall?s friend Jane Herbert, and it?s as charming as she is, which is saying a lot. The others are tunes I wrote. One is based on a minor adaptation of a melody indigenous to early American coffee houses, a few are extensions of themes that have been wandering through my head recently, and the one called CURACAO DOLOROSO is a sort of three-stage operation. Originally I?d wanted to do HEARTACHES, because it seemed so incongruous and because the original record of it had something of the same neolithic connection to bossa nova as early marching bands had to Gerry Mulligan. I wrote a different set of changes for it and we tried it, and it was so horrible that George Avakian emerged from the control room in the middle of the first take, waving his arms and shuddering. (This is a musical milestone of sorts, since George usually smiles serenely thru the most disastrous takes imaginable, hoping that something good will somehow happen and he?ll be able to splice it in later. I think the only other time he walked out in the middle of a take, the studio was on fire.) So on a later date we used the chords and avoided the melody, which is what you?re supposed to do in jazz anyhow, come to think of it, and it worked out nicely. (Since it?s a different melody and a different set of chords, the writers of HEARTACHES won?t be around looking for royalties ? but if they ever feel like dropping by for a drink, I?m usually home between 4 and 6.)
As always, George Avakian masterminded the entire operation effortlessly, even with a telephone more or less permanently installed in one ear. (There was one point, I must admit, when the only way I could get his attention was to go out to the phone booth and call him.) I don?t know how the phone calls worked out, but I love the album.

Originating at the turn of the 1980s as a leader of the lite-jazz movement, Everything but the Girl became an unlikely success story more than a decade later, emerging at the vanguard of the fusion between pop and electronica. Founded in 1982 by Hull University students Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt, the duo took their name from a sign placed in the window of a local furniture shop, which claimed ?for your bedroom needs, we sell everything but the girl.? At the time of their formation, both vocalist Thorn and songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Watt were already signed independently to the Cherry Red label; Thorn was a member of the sublime Marine Girls, while Watt had issued several solo singles and also collaborated with Robert Wyatt.

Odyssey Number Five is the fourth studio album by Australian rock band Powderfinger. Produced by Nick DiDia and released on September 4, 2000, the album produced four singles. The most successful, ?My Happiness?, reached #4 on the ARIA Singles Chart, won the 2001 ARIA Music Award for ?Single of the Year?, and topped Triple J?s Hottest 100 in 2000. The album also featured ?These Days?, which topped Triple J?s Hottest 100 in 1999, making Powderfinger the first band since Joy Division to twice achieve top ranking in the countdown.

The release history behind Ike Quebec?s Easy Living session is pretty convoluted. Eight songs were recorded in all, five of them bluesy sextet jams and three of them ballad standards in Quebec?s trademark romantic style. The LP was slated to feature three of the blues tunes and all of the ballads, but remained unissued; in 1981, all five blues were released as Congo Lament, and in 1987, Easy Living was issued on LP in its originally intended, six-song form. Blue Note?s CD reissue cuts through all the confusion by gathering all eight songs, grouping the blues cuts together in the first part of the album for continuity?s sake. The sextet lineup is absolutely stellar, featuring fellow tenor Stanley Turrentine, trombonist Bennie Green, pianist Sonny Clark, bassist Milt Hinton, and drummer Art Blakey ? all extremely well suited to the blues material that leads off the album. On the standards, Quebec performs with the rhythm section only, and Clark?s soft touch takes over the backdrops. His lines on these selections are long and lyrical, full of harmonic details as well as atmosphere. Green?s two originals, ?Congo Lament? and ?B.G.?s Groove Two,? are both winning and rhythmically infectious, while Quebec?s ?I.Q. Shuffle? is the most bop-tinged sextet workout. The mood isn?t as unified as some of his carefully calibrated romantic dates, but Easy Living offers the two strongest sides of Quebec?s musical personality in one place, encapsulating a great deal of what he did best.
