Though her track record as an album artist isn't as unblemished as some, including the Recording Academy, would have us believe (though not bad, The Globe Sessions was a disappointment following its self-titled predecessor, and C'mon C'mon was MOR pap at its most painful), Sheryl Crow remains a consistently impressive singles artist. From her charmingly belligerent debut, "Leaving Las Vegas," to 2005's lush, quietly contemplative "Good Is Good," Crow hasn't released a lead single I haven't loved. That streak, it seems, would be broken by the singer-songwriter's hippy anthem "Love Is Free," which chugs along like a well-oiled parade float but is a little too cute-n'-bouncy for its source material (the failed federal response to Hurricane Katrina), if not for a technicality: The single was preceded by the airplay-only "Shine Over Babylon," a more sobering take on current events that is sonically closer to "If It Makes You Happy" than "Soak Up the Sun."

What both songs have in common, however, is a roots-rock foundation and musical palette that harks back to Crow's Tuesday Night Music Club, an obviously decided move given that Detours reunites Crow with producer Bill Bottrell for the first time since her debut. The reunion was well worth the 15-year wait, as many of the songs on Detours rank among Crow's best. Bottrell's playful guitar melody dances beneath and between Crow's lead vocal on the sweet "Drunk with the Thought of You," while the tight, multi-part harmonies of the title track hint at the country record Crow has threatened to make. There's a grittiness to the music and a scratchy, lived-in quality to Crow's vocals that's been missing from her last couple of albums, and the rough edges are becoming.

References to the current political climate inform the first half of Detours, with barbed jabs at the Bush administration both obvious ("The president spoke words of comfort with teardrops in his eyes/Then he led us as a nation into a war based on lies," Crow snaps on the opening song, "God Bless This Mess") and slightly more veiled ("Freedoms etched on sacred pillars?Can lead to madman oil drillers," she sings on "Babylon"). Crow imagines a not-so-distant future where dissent is commonplace and gasoline is free ("Gasoline") and she makes it known how she feels about our nation's privileged slackers ("Motivation"). But "Out of Our Heads" is the record's keynote address, a thumping rally cry with a fervent vocal, a singsong choir chorus, and a message of hope that's genuine and affecting; the anthemic song would be a good fit for the Obama campaign.

On their own, the political songs would render Detours Important, but Crow has managed the nearly impossible: recording an album that's as intensely personal as it is fiercely political. If love resulted in Wildflower, her most extraordinarily beautiful?and extraordinarily slept-on?album, then credit the dissolution of that love for what could be Crow's most heartbreakingly personal work to date. Her break-up with Lance Armstrong shades much of the album's second, even stronger half, most overtly on "Diamond Ring," which gives listeners a startlingly frank glimpse into the couple's unraveling: "I blew up our love nest/By making one little request." Then, at song's end, she admits plainly: "Diamond ring fucks up everything." "Make It Go Away (Radiation Song)" paints a portrait of a woman taking stock of her life while laying on a table and awaiting radiation treatment, with the specter of Madam Butterfly?a character who unknowingly, tragically entered into an impermanent union?overseeing the procedure. "Was love the illness, and disease the cure?" Crow asks. That her connection to Armstrong deepened and expanded upon learning she had breast cancer shortly after they split only deepened and expanded the scope, honesty, and profundity of her work.

The follow-up to Leroy Vinnegar's first Contemporary album, this CD reissue matches the excellent bassist (who is mostly content to back the other soloists) with trumpeter Freddy Hill, tenor saxophonist Teddy Edwards, Victor Feldman on piano and vibes and drummer Ron Jefferson for four of the seven selections; the other numbers also use Hill and Edwards along with pianist Mike Melvoin, vibraphonist Roy Ayers (at the beginning of his career) and drummer Milt Turner. The set (which has three originals by Vinnegar, Edwards' "Wheelin' and Dealin'," Don Nelson, Les McCann and Freddie Hubbard in addition to the one standard "I'll String Along with You") helps define the modern mainstream of the early '60s, when cool jazz was being replaced by hard bop.

The Newark, New Jersey tenor and soprano saxophonist Wayne Shorter is the most evocative composer of the modern jazz era. His urgent, Coltrane-influenced sax sound, his stints with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, Miles Davis, and Weather Report, and his classic compositions span the ebb of the hard bop era in the late '50s to the daring avant-garde and fusion period of the late '60s and early '70s. This two-CD set compiles the best of his songs from his recordings on the legendary Blue Note label, from 1960 to 1989. The first disc contains 12 selections from Shorter's recording dates as a leader, with drummers Elvin Jones and Tony Williams; pianists Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, and McCoy Tyner; trumpeters Lee Morgan and Freddie Hubbard; and bassists Ron Carter and Reggie Workman. Shorter has the rare ability to simultaneously portray a specific visual image and evoke mystery. His angular and edgy tenor sound drives the straight-ahead and Afro-Latin swing of "Witch Hunt," "Speak No Evil," and "Black Nile." His version of "Footprints" is more meditative than the one recorded by Miles, while the soulful strut of "Adam's Apple" rocks with a jazzy boogalo beat. On "Super Nova," Shorter's soaring sound foreshadows his fearless forays in the "New Thing."

The second disc highlights Shorter's work as a sideman. His post-bop classics with Art Blakey are included, from his swinging tribute to Lester Young ("Lester Left Town") to the Latinesque "United." This collection also includes Shorter's sides with ex-Jazz Messengers band mates Freddie Hubbard and Lee Morgan, with the dark and dancing "Marie Antoinette" from the LP Ready for Freddie, and the sophisticated bossa nova syncopations of "Rio" from Morgan's album The Procrastinator. The last two selections, a beautiful live version of "Limbo" from pianist Michel Petrucciani's 1986 CD, Power of Three, with guitarist Jim Hall, and a fusion-friendly take on "Nefertiti" with drummer Lenny White and bassist Stanley Clarke from the Manhattan Project, demonstrate the timelessness of Wayne Shorter's music and the soundscapes it charted. --Eugene Holley Jr.

While this isn't the only Wayne Shorter Blue Note collection, it is the best. The Best of Wayne Shorter, which was released in 1998 within a series of other Blue Note best-ofs that were coming out at the time, is adequate, but with only one disc it's hard to cover any ground with a guy who's recorded around a dozen top-notch records as a leader for Blue Note, and then appeared on scores of others -- and that's where this collection wins. The second disc consists of appearances he made alongside such greats as Art Blakey, Lee Morgan, and Freddie Hubbard. Perhaps a Blue Note Wayne Shorter box set is in order? At any rate, "Speak No Evil," "Footprints," "Witch Hunt," and "Nefertiti" prove to highlight Wayne Shorter's astounding career and in turn show off jazz composition in general -- as Shorter stands as the one of the genre's best songwriters. Recommended as a springboard into the full-length discs these tracks are culled from, The Classic Blue Note Recordings of Wayne Shorter hits the mark.

Tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson's fifth and final early Blue Note album is his only one with a group larger than a quintet. Henderson welcomes quite an all-star band (trumpeter Lee Morgan, trombonist Curtis Fuller, vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Ron Carter and drummer Joe Chambers) and together they perform originals by Henderson (including "A Shade of Jade"), Walton and Morgan ("Free Wheelin'"). The advanced music has plenty of exciting moments and all of the young talents play up to the level one could hope for. [Originally released on LP in 1966, Mode for Joe has been reissued on CD several times over; the 2004 Blue Note reissue remastered by Rudy Van Gelder is recommended, although the difference in sound is minimal and the bonus version of "Black" has been placed at the bottom track list instead of as an alternate in the middle.

Given the date of this release and the band lineup, one might assume that this is a straight-up hard -bop album. However, this 1966 Joe Henderson record--featuring trumpeter Lee Morgan, trombonist Curtis Fuller, vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Joe Chambers--is a great example of modern jazz at its best. MODE FOR JOE was recorded during a time of sweeping musical changes due to developments in free jazz, soul jazz, and even early experiments with fusion. It was a time when the bluesy and funky leanings of hard-boppers were giving way to more individualized contemporary approaches. One of the best examples of this shift, MODE FOR JOE sounds more like the experimental work of Branford Marsalis than the groovy musings of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers.

The last track on MODE FOR JOE, "Free Wheelin'," is the only dyed-in-the-wool hard-bop tune heard here. Other than that, this outing's mostly up-tempo songs serve as vehicles for solos. Henderson himself proves that the template for players such as Marsalis, Joe Lovano, and Joshua Redman was invented a generation earlier, as evidenced on "A Shade of Jade," "Black," and others, making this one of the sax legend's most intriguing albums.

Wikipedia: Seal Henry Olusegun Olumide Adeola Samuel (born February 19, 1963 in Paddington, London) is an Anglo-Nigerian soul singer and songwriter. He is professionally known only by his first name, Seal. He won three Grammy Awards for his 1995 single "Kiss from a Rose". As the vocalist on the Adamski single "Killer", Seal came to fame when the single reached number one in 1990 in the UK. Like many other Adamski tracks, the single was also a hit in night clubs. Seal subsequently signed to ZTT Records and released his debut album (produced by Trevor Horn), titled Seal, in 1991. Two versions of the album are known to be in circulation: the original "premix" version and a second, more common version with an updated mix. This is attributed to the demand for a produced single rushing the final album edit, and as Seal puts it, his and producer Horn's "inability to let go." Seal was born Seal Henry Olusegun Olumide Adelo Samuel on February 19, 1963 in Kilburn, a small town near Paddington, England to a Nigerian father and Brazilian mother. Shortly after his birth he was sent away to white foster parents near London to be reclaimed by his mother when he was four. Two years later she fell ill and returned to her homeland, sending Seal to live with his father, who he claims abused him. Seal ran away at the age of 15, only to return years later to transport his father's remains to Nigeria. He graduated with a degree in architecture and has worked at McDonald's, as an electrical engineer and a leather clothing designer. In the 1980s he joined Push, an English funk band, and toured with them in Japan. In Asia, he joined a blues band in Thailand for awhile before separating from the group and journeying throughout India on his own. When Seal arrived back in England, he met Adamski, a producer who was impressed by him. He was given the lyrics of the song "Killer", which was a huge hit in 1990. As a young man, Seal was diagnosed with the skin condition discoid lupus, which left him with distinctive facial scars on his upper cheeks. Seal married German supermodel Heidi Klum on May 10, 2005, on a beach in Mexico. During an interview on Live With Regis And Kelly, Seal stated that he proposed to Klum "On top of a mountain in Whistler, Canada". Seal and Heidi have two sons, Henry G�nther Ademola Dashtu Samuel, born September 12, 2005 and Johan Riley Fyodor Taiwo Samuel, born November 22, 2006 in Los Angeles, California.

allmusic: U.K. pop sensation Seal has become notorious for taking extended breaks between albums (usually up to four years). On his third album, Human Being, producer Trevor Horn again joins Seal, and as on his past releases, life's trials and tribulations are used as the basis for the song's subject matter and lyrics (broken relationships, death, etc.). Horn again helps Seal achieve an unbelievably sonically rich album -- with each listen, you hear something you didn't before. The moderately paced, grooving opening track, "Human Beings," merges Seal's trademark soothing and crooned vocals with lyrics that deal with the highly publicized deaths of gangsta rappers Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G. Directly after, three instant Seal classics follow -- the gentle "State of Grace" and "Just Like You," plus the dance-rocker "Latest Craze." Other highlights include the ethereal beauty of "Still Love Remains," the gradually building "Excerpt From," and the moving "Colour." Although Seal fans might grow impatient with such long breaks between albums, the pop perfection of Human Being turns out to be well worth the wait.

Branford Marsalis' longtime pianist Kenny Kirkland died two months after the sessions for this album began ? hence the title ? and after a futile attempt to finish the recording in December 1998, Branford decided to leave the music as is, first takes and all. If there are any serious flaws in the playing, they will escape the vast majority of ears out there, for this is an uncompromising, well-played disc of acoustic jazz that leans a bit toward adventure at times. At first, Branford's foursome (Kirkland, Eric Revis on bass, and Jeff "Tain" Watts on drums) seems content to turn out a pretty good facsimile of the John Coltrane Quartet, with Kirkland playing brilliantly and reflectively in the McCoy Tyner manner. But with "Lykief" ? a pun on Keith Jarrett's name ? Branford takes up Jarrett's long unanswered challenge and pushes through a tumbling, nearly rhythmically free piece attractively anchored by Jarrett's gospel harmonies and melodic methods. "Bullworth" blasts off on a Watts hip-hop rhythm, with Branford going nuts in an angular bit of soloing, and "16th St. Baptist Church" apparently sends the CD home on a funky New Orleans street march, only to be followed by a touching, uncredited Marsalis/Kirkland benediction. Once again, the post-Tonight Show, post-Buckshot Marsalis makes a credibly serious jazz statement in what turned out to be the swan song for one of the neo-bop era's finest lineups.

By the time this album was recorded in 1958, Lacy was already making his mark playing soprano saxophone exclusively and working with some of the most forward-looking musicians in jazz, like pianist Cecil Taylor and arranger Gil Evans. The group here consists of some of New York's most probing, younger players--pianist Mal Waldron, bassist Buell Neidlinger an associate from the Taylor group), and Elvin Jones, already a forceful presence on drums. The startling thing about this early venture into Monk's music, the first album by other musicians devoted to Monk, is that Lacy was already foregoing the better known tunes, concentrating on Monk repertoire that was seldom played outside the pianist's own groups. Lacy's first recording was the debut of Cecil Taylor, Jazz Advance! (1956, Transition); the following year saw Lacy's first session as a leader, Soprano Sax (1957, Contemporary). Since that time Lacy,who spent the major portion of his career in France, has humbly established himself as one of the definitive voices of the soprano (despite John Coltrane pretty much yanking the rug out from under him in 1960 with My Favorite Things ). The best of Lacy's vast number of recordings tend to be solo dates, his duos with pianist Mal Waldron, or sessions with his loyal Sextet members. Lacy and Neidlinger extended their ambitions in a different direction after Cecil Taylor's group. As might be gathered from the title, this is an all-Monk set in which the slow, gentle ?Ask Me Now? and?Reflections? contrast with the devilishly complex ?Four In One?, ?Bye-Ya? and ?Skippy?, with other tunes taking up the middle ground. Pianist Mal Waldron and drummer Elvin Jones complete the exciting, open-eared rhythm section.

A single 43-minute composition / symphony (broken into five tracks for easier access) from Japan's drone druids that goes from etheral to crushingly heavy and everything between. Stark in contrasts and attention to texture.' Feedbacker begins at the core, with ambient waves of Earth-like drones rippling across an otherwise silent nine minute expanse before Atsuo spills into his cymbals, commencing a funereal march. Bassist/vocalist Takeshi drawls up and down his double-necked bass while Wata (the femme fatale guitarist) curls out little tongues of blue flame... Boris is considered stoner rock, but they are also hailed under the noise-rock genre for their collaborative efforts with noise groups such as Merzbow and Keiji Haino. Their songs range from long (up to 30 minutes) progressive-style songs, with heavy guitars but many slow beats.

Eric Clapton has metamorphosed from tie-dyed guitar god for a mostly male congregation to Armani-clad crooner and chart-certified ladies' man, yet it misses the point to focus on that transition without considering '90s forays into blues (on From The Cradle, his brilliant 1994 live-in-the-studio homage), techno, and the silky contemporary R&B of "Change The World." Pilgrim, his first studio album of new songs since Journeyman, reflects all these facets in his most ambitious, and certainly darkest solo project. Its title isn't casual: These are elliptical meditations on the ravages of time, as preoccupied with matters of the spirit as affairs of the heart. "My Father's Eyes" opens the song cycle with allusions to the traumatic death of toddler son Conor (the inspiration for '92's poignant "Tears In Heaven"), while the title song adopts the fevered, falsetto vocal style of Curtis Mayfield to riveting effect. Coproducer Simon Climie sculpts electronic orchestrations and favors clipped synth rhythms, while Clapton himself largely eschews his once dominant, climactic electric solos for restrained but potent acoustic filigree, staccato riffs, and fluid rhythm work, letting loose with a rougher, more biting edge on the squalling "She's Gone." --Sam Surtherland

Philippe Fichot's French art project DIE FORM has always been a lot more than just a music band. For 25 years Die Form has stood for an unrivaled fusion of music, performance, photography and film. After numerous collaborations with other artists and more than 30 albums, many video clips and short films plus two volumes of photographs, the unique interpretation of Bach compositions ( as it was performed live in Leipzig on the occasion of the Bach week in 2006 ) is fianlly released as a new album.

Once again organic and electronic noise with neo classic elements is united with experimental structures with classic harmonies and vocals. And also again cold technical elements are confronted with the warm and erotic voice of Eliane P. Due to the sensational success of these Bach interpretations the performed songs are now presented on an official DIE FORM album and unfold the irresistible charm of the original performance on the basis of harmony and rhythm.

DIE FORM has long escaped the limits of dark electronics and presents a mature and genuine album that no aficionado of experimental sound worlds can elude.

The last decade of Chet's career found the seasoned jazzman embracing all aspects of group performance. On any given night you might find him singing and playing with solo piano, performing with a guitar/bass duo, or jamming with a quintet. Chet never had one location he would call home. His home resided in the location of his next gig. On this concert, Chet found his home in Germany working in a quartet consisting of piano, bass, and drums.

The concert was recorded live on December 9, 1978 for German radio. Chet is accompanied by Phil Markowitz (piano), Scott Lee (bass), and Jeff Brillinger (drums).

The disk opens with a shinning example of Chet's love for romanticism. The Touch of Your Lips provides Baker a launch pad for his steamy, smoky vocals. Putting down the trumpet, Chet sings the head of the piece and expresses his solo by scatting. His ideas are wonderful. Like the opener, the disk closes with My Funny Valentine, a piece Baker polished over the years and embraced as his own. Chet sings followed by a scatted solo, and again the ideas are excellent.

The remaining pieces contain excellent solos and solid group work. Each musician has their "antenna" out, listening closely to what each other are doing, responding and reacting to make the group sound as one singular entity.

Baker's catalog is brimming with live concerts, like this one. Some are great, others are brilliant, and others so-so. As you travel through his catalog, you get an idea of Chet's ups and downs, for that was the nature of the man. He lived a life riddled with personal problems and drug abuse. Music was the one constant love of his life and for this he was always passionate. One might say Chet's problems shone-through in painful beauty within his music. Whether or not that's true, the best essence of Chet was always laid-out for all to hear. Chet's performance here is an example of this.

Well preformed and recorded, Oh You Crazy Moon is sure to please even the fussiest of Chet fans.

Second Winter is a hotbed of blues-rock. With the first set of guitar rifts blasting, ?Memory Pain? past the grille of your speakers, somehow you just know that this blues-rock guitarist that hails from Mississippi and who has a made-for-blues voice would be otherworldly. And so he has become, a saint amongst the illuminati of blues-rock aficionados. With solid schooling, Johnny Winter was 70s blues-rock, the like that many owe their styles to.

Johnny Winter?s second Columbia album was a strange one in that the 2-album set featured 3 sides of music with the 4th side blank. But contained on those 3-sides was music so intense, you were forced to take notice. Winter was a shaft of glory sprung from the halo of the Blues and any song from Second Winter validates that.

This Legacy issue of Second Winter dynamically improves on the album?s original release by including not only the original material but also 2 unreleased bonus tracks including an instrumental ?Tell the Truth?, a Ray Charles song. To sweeten the pot, Legacy has also included a second disc that exclusively features a 1970 Royal Albert Hall show. This 2nd disc represents the first time that this show has been released to the public.

The concert, a smoker of a show, comes from a set done at Royal Albert Hall in 1970. Winter is no stranger to live shows, which is how he is ultimately set free, like a captive animal who finally gets the roam of the jungle. Within the expanse of this show is a rousing live version of Chuck Berry?s ?Johnny B Goode?, a song that is also found on the studio part of this album. However, there are 2 extraordinary performances of ?Tobacco Road? and of ?Frankenstein.? ?Frankenstein? is a song that achieved high charting status as a funky instrumental piece for Edgar Winter later in the 70s. It?s done here in an embryonic, but very entertaining, very different way. I find it to be ultimately more rewarding than Edgar Winter?s studio version. It?s raw, structured, but oh so good, clocking in at around 9-minutes. ?Tobacco Road? occupies much more of the bits found on this CD, an 11-minute intensity that makes the listener long for the days of blues-funk played in a live setting such as is found here.

Rounding out the 2nd disc are tracks like the 12-minute extended work of ?It?s My Own Fault?, the Sonny Boy Williamson song, ?Help Me?, and the 11-minute blast of Johnny Winter?s own ?Mean Town Blues.? There are 9 blistering songs here, all played to the fullest extent allowed by Fire Marshalls lest the Hall be burned down and become history. The band consisted of Johnny?s brother, Edgar Winter, whose White Trash ensemble turned out great material but who narrowed his output to plant his later band, The Edgar Winter Group, into the lofty singles arena; and the impeccable rhythm section of Tommy Shannon on bass and ?Uncle? John Turner on drums to complement the inimitable Johnny Winter. This lineup, my friends, may be the most intensive and incendiary of any live blues-funk-rock band to date.

Working backward from the bonus of the live addition CD to the original album, Legacy has unearthed and included 2 unreleased cuts, ?Early in the Morning? and an instrumental ?Tell the Truth? that is also found in the live set of disc 2 albeit in vocal rendition. Both of these tracks were recorded in 1969 but not included on Second Winter until now. They both fit quite well as a result. In the studio, Johnny has an uncanny talent of capturing the heart of a song recorded thereby creating an element of the live performance. With the slide added, Johnny knew few equal. He could make the guitar and the slide implement become one as if they were originally created one for the other, the Adam and Eve of sound.

The sound on this Legacy issue is a noticeable improvement over the earlier release of the same title on CD. This is true of most, if not all, of earlier re-issued albums? first appearance on CDs. The sound and packaging were deplorable in many instances. Legacy?s approach is an admirable one as they not only remaster the music but also augment and bolster the original album with bonus cuts from the same sessions and live performances. With improved packaging, Legacy reissues become definitive in that they offer a complete overview of the period that the album was created in. Completists and purists should be very pleased. The packaging is a tri-fold digipak that houses the two discs as well as a 24-page booklet with plenty of new notes and comments by the band of the time. This is slip-cased by a clear plastic Legacy dust cover.

With a searing blend of covers and originals, Second Winter becomes essential to any fan?s blues-rock library. Johnny Winter?s second Columbia album brought with it the promise of a champion. That promise eventually was realized on subsequent Winter releases like Nothin? But the Blues; White, Hot, and Blue; Johnny Winter And; Still Alive and Well; John Dawson Winter III; and Saints and Sinners found on Blue Sky and eventual Alligator releases. I find the re-release of this set momentous and highly satisfying and can recommend it emphatically.
